Manned missions lead to colonization, which is the primary reason they are valuable. I don't want to diminish what has been accomplished with robotic explorers, but they are only prelude to the expansion of humanity beyond Earth. As great as our planet may seem, there are plenty of other planets out there and we're only a few generations away from them.
2001 in #5, behind Star Trek: First Contact, which is AHEAD of Star Trek 2: The Wrath of KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN??? CONTACT??!?! That one, apologies to Carl Sagan, doesn't belong on the top 40. Here's a better 'Space movie' list, which is in alphabetical order.
1. 2001
2. Alien
3. Apollo 13
4. Pitch Black
5. Planet of the Apes (1968)
6. Solyaris
7. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
8. Star Wars 5: The Empire Strikes Back
9. Star Wars 4: A New Hope
10. The Black Hole
Print it out and take it to the rental store, you'll be glad you did!
I guess its just a coincidence, but having this topic immediately followed with "FCC Wants to Track Wireless" seems to say so much more than either of these articles do on their own.
I had no idea there was so much money in open sourced OS or whatever the penguinheads are calling Linux now. Before you know it, you'll be able to go into a store and buy code that was written by people who thought they were contributing to a freely available OS!
Mabye if the article was still in the location that was linked to, this 'copywrite violation' wouldn't need be here. Also, the readers of slashdot are the ones who do the majority of the scoring (read up on metamoderation), and so don't harass the moderators.
No, Michael Bay (Pearl Harbour) is directing. As much as I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, i KNOW its going to turn into a crappy action/romance just like Pearl Harbour, Armageddon, The Island or just run down his directoral list and pick one... ALL HIS MOVIES HAVE SUCKED!!!
Mabye you missed the recent Temple1 success, or the two rovers that are sitting on Mars, doing science? Maybe you're just trying to bump up your post count?
Without competition, progress stagnates. There is nowhere that says that competition must be negative, incidentally... take the olympics for example. If this can be turned into a CHALLENGE instead of a cock-wagging contest, then full speed ahead! It will be done one way or another and I see it as a likely conclusion that the US space program will drive the 'race' to L1-L5.
Time to take off that tinfoil hat, me thinks. Even with free sources of power that arent based on petroleum, oil would still have a million uses and would last a lot longer, too, since it wouldnt be squandered on energy creation.
and the Deep Impact coverage doesnt? Slashdot once again moves down a peg.... and why is two people following instructions news in the first place, even if there wasn't a far more noteworthy geek event taking place? Come on mods.
Have you considered compressing your video using one of the many codecs available? DivX is quite popular, and RMVB offers some of the best quality:size ratio I've seen. I understand how nice it is to be able to store raw mpeg for later use but is it really necessary for your purposes?
There is something to be said for viewing Ep.3 in lower than perfect quality; it would have to stand on its script because the special effects will not carry it in low-res. I'll download, and if I'm impressed I'll pay my dollars to see it in the theatre and appreciate it more for the special effects. I'm still kicking myself for paying to see Daredevil without downloading it first.
This is the approach that heroin pushers generally take in the movies; the first uses are free, but once you're emotionally invested it begins to cost you.

We will not evolve as a species if we stay here.
I cant believe i neglected it!
... dinosaurs will also have drank water from lakes!
Is this actually some kind of valuable discovery? Don't pretty much all species eat grass in one form or another?

Beautiful DNA - is there anything it can't do?
A whopping 42.7% of all statistics are made up.
Can you express that as # of hydrogen bombs?

He built an underwater ROV and posted the pictures inline so that he could find the server after the slashdotting that is on the way.
With fiberoptics coming down the pipe, who wants to abandon land based communications?
If you performed those functions on your own voice, you would hear no sound at all.
-1 overrated
But Capitalizing Every Word In That Headline Really Seemed To Stand Out More Than Usual.
