    This brings up an interesting question -- can you get a patent for a device/process that's clearly illegal under federal law?

    For example, say someone applied for a patent on a method for manufacturing crack cocaine. Does submitting the application constitute a violation of the law in and of itself, or would the application simply be denied? Or, would it be granted? If it was granted, could the patent holder sue drug dealers for patent infringement?

    Obviously, I don't advise trying this, because no matter what else happens, some DEA agents would surely "invite" themselves over to your house for a visit if you did... I'm just wondering how the patent office would handle this.

    In which case they still bash their girlfriend's head against the wall, but are able to stay out of jail because they play for a major professional sports team.

    (no, I'm not saying all sports players are like this, but a bully that's good at sports is still a bully)

    I found I listened to more of "other people's" music as a result of walkman radios being played too loudly on the bus than all other sources of "external" music combined.

    Can someone suggest some ticker symbols of companies in the hearing aid business? This should be a growth industry in the next few decades.

    A number of the worms going around actually do turn infected computers into zombies, which spammers use to help them send out spam. It's not difficult to imagine how this could be used to circumvent a system of "postage" paid in CPU time.

    Diebold has had SEVERAL articles on slashdot, all of them negative... Why are the voters still using that equipment? Shouldn't Diebold be bankrupt by now?

    About 100,000,000 people voted in the last presidential election.
    There are about 750,000 registered users of Slashdot.
    A large percentage of those people read the site rarely, if ever.
    Often, many of those accounts are controlled by the same person.

    If the corporate media ever made a big deal out of this, people would start to care. Otherwise, it's hard to get people to pay attention to an issue like this.

    More seriously though, I find it hard to believe that only 54% of adults with internet access use that access on a typical day.

    Dialup, which is what most people have, is a pain in the ass. While we're using our DSL lines to post 20 comments a day to Slashdot, most people are in front of a different kind of monitor, watching the latest Fear Factor or Joe Millionaire or biased "news" program.

    There's also an Albertson's store brand "vodka" which if I remember right is 50 proof.

    If you want a cheap buzz, you have to calculate (cost)/(volume*proof) and buy whatever vodka gives you the lowest number (obviously this is if you only care about getting the most alcohol per dollar and not taste).

    If that's all you want, it's probably cheaper to buy a big bottle of cheap vodka at Costco. It's not like it would have any less taste, and the "delivery" would be faster since it's not watered down.

    The problem with email spam is that many people get (literally) hundreds per day, whereas I get, at most, 3-4 pieces of junk postal mail in a day. Therefore spam is far more annoying. If I had to hunt for my phone bill or whatever buried in with 200 pieces of junk mail, I would agree with you.

    Oh, and spam phones home. I've never had junk mail sent as registered/certified mail.

    So let's say I'm driving to work, and on the way I have to go over a bridge. We'll also assume I have an old unreliable car. Traffic is stop and go, and my car stalls on the bridge. Normally not a big problem; I start the car again and go. But let's say I get a false positive and the car won't start. Since I'm on the bridge, there's no shoulder to push the car onto. Traffic over the bridge just got a lot worse than it was in the first place.

    Then again, New Mexico probably doesn't have traffic problems, so nobody there is too worried about this. Imagine the chaos if this law were to spread to California...

    Yes, the sun is "falling towards Earth" in the sense that the Earth's gravity pulls the sun towards the earth... but the earth is also falling towards the sun, and since the sun is much more massive than the earth, the earth orbits the sun and not the other way around. Actually, the earth is pulling every other object in the universe toward it, but most of them have much stronger forces acting on them at the same time, so it doesn't make much difference.

    That sounds more reasonable. The original post did say 1.2KWh/day, but they probably meant 1.2KWh/hour (that is, 1.2KW) instead. Since I'm from America, I couldn't assume that what's reasonable here would be considered reasonable over in Europe.
