There are a variety of ways to geolocate an IP. It's not exact, there are gaps, but most of the time you can get country without a problem. I've used InfoDB's free geolocation database and it works nicely, they also have an API if you don't want to run your own DB. http://ipinfodb.com/ip_database.php Lots of non-free ones out there too.

Although the easiest would be a simple hosted javascript that does all the work and gives a screen wide overlay explaining how you support Internet Freedom and wish Pakistan wasn't censoring. Or maybe just a 'Hi Pakistan, I have a joke for you. Mohammad, Jesus and L Ron Hubbard walked into a bar one day...'. Then a single line on any webpage would get the message out there.

I like how the feds, and now many states, disallow searches of the DNA database to find false positives. Hundreds were found before this line of research was shut down. From a LA Times story in 2008 "State crime lab analyst Kathryn Troyer was running tests on Arizona's DNA database when she stumbled across two felons with remarkably similar genetic profiles. The men matched at nine of the 13 locations on chromosomes, or loci, commonly used to distinguish people. The FBI estimated the odds of unrelated people sharing those genetic markers to be as remote as 1 in 113 billion. But the mug shots of the two felons suggested that they were not related: One was black, the other white. In the years after her 2001 discovery, Troyer found dozens of similar matches -- each seeming to defy impossible odds."....

I don't remember the facts enough to find a quick link but the example they used was an American pharma company sells a drug in the US, but they pay licensing fees to a subsidiary in another country with better tax laws. So they basically break even in the US so pay no taxes here. It costs a lot in lawyers but when you're talking billions it makes financial sense to do this. Also after the Valdez spill congress put a cap of 75 million for economic damages from an oil spill so I don't see BP getting hurt too bad from this.

Since the ISPs almost universally disappeared from the face of the planet. We no longer have thousands of ISPs, we're realistically down to a few mega corps running the show. The '96 telco reform act allowed ISPs to flourish, forcing competition. The Bush era put Powel's kid in charge of the FCC and they got rid of any reform and embraced corporatism. So we're back to the state and federally mandated baby bells and major cable companies and everyone other ISP has closed up or went to small niche markets. I was in the industry a decade and I can't think of many good guys still around.

So yes ISPs are evil, at least the few left standing, as they're a shining example of corporatism.

  23. Re:It's all about the competition on The Far-Reaching Effects of Comcast v FCC · · Score: 2, Interesting

The small ISPs, and I'd argue the rapid uptake of the Internet in the US, really only existed because of regulation. The '96 telco reform act forced the incumbent 'baby bells' to do business with startup phone companies. These in turn sold lines to ISPs in ways the bells wouldn't. Like affordable state wide phone trunking so no more physical equipment in every dialing area. When Powell's kid started running the FCC under the Bush era, they rolled back all the '96 telco reform rules in favor of big business. ISPs started dying quickly after this as the bells no longer had to play fairly, not even having to fake playing fair.

I'm all in favor of strong regulation by the FCC. Break up the physical lines from the service side of companies so there is fair and equal access. The lines were put in and more than paid for by taxpayers, time to move them to truly open as a public service. If the last mile was a commodity like it should be, we'd have so much competition available that net neutrality wouldn't be an issue as you could choose your provider of choice.
