There is also something to be said for the pure impact that A New Hope had, from a movie-goers perspective. Special effects that had just never been imagined were right in front of your face, and executed very well.
I think that played a big part. Now that everyone has seen the Matrix, LOTR, Episode 1/2, I don't think any movie could have as big of a visual impact on us anymore. (But if such a movie did come out that shocked even the most jaded of us, WOW, that would be something!)
Picard and Kirk were captains in completely different eras.
With Kirk, the Federation was relatively new, and there was still a kind of Old West atmosphere to the galaxy. The Federation was still trying to establish its role.
With Picard, there was a lot more beurocratic pressure on the Enterprise, as the flagship of the Federation, to act in the right way. That's not to say that they went by the book in all cases; I recall more than a couple episodes where Picard either broke the prime directive, or else chose not to punish the crewmember that did.
I don't think it's fair to compare the two in the way that you have, in the same way you can't compare Kennedy to Lincoln to determine who was the better President.
If these politicians really do have the best interest of the people in mind, as they claim repeatedly, then why is DC full of lobbying offices for every major industry? Until this problem is addressed, the people and their needs will never truly be represented. And I have a feeling that "until" is really a "never."
What I love is how you'll always hear the top brass at MS saying just how important the "customer" is to them, and how they just love to listen to the "customer."
How long, exactly, have "customers" been asking for transparent PNG, at least?
"This long New York Times article (10 pages; no registration required) reports on the mismeasure of television (TV)."
Thanks for letting us know that "TV" refers, in fact, to "television" in the article synopsis. I was ready to pull up Webster's, had you not interceded.
Hey dude, I'm just as pissed at the last two movies as the next guy. But watching these movies is just not optional anymore. If you want to be the only guy at the office (or dorm) sitting by yourself, clueless as to what everyone else is chatting about, you can skip it.
But for me, I see it as a social tax, something you have to do...
I've never looked at slashcode, but my guess is, if it was at all designed correctly and cleanly, or if its maintainers gave a shit, or if slashdot's maintainers gave a shit, a lot more important updates would be done already.
There's at least one extension that works pretty well under Camino, and once I installed it, Camino became a lot more responsive on my old-ish iBook. It's flashblock, and since I hate pretty much all flash, especially all the ads, this has been a great addition.
On a side note, why does geocities exist? I don't remember the last fucking time I clicked a link to a site on geocities, without getting the "exceeded its allocated data transfer" error.

I'm knew I wouldn't be the only one that thought of good ol' Pete.
Did I miss something? Does WINE not suck huge ass these days?
Is that the most uncomfortable and uncharismatic CEO ever?
You ain't missing much. Bunch of geeks in costumes. I want my 8 minutes of my life back.

Sweet christ, will there be a "televised" comment whenever there is any story about the next Nintendo console?
It's enough to make you sick.

If I was the guy in charge, I think I would have to sneak a pr0n cd into there somewhere... Just to see if anyone actually went through each cd.
How does that apply to this story? Is an invitation to talk the "fight" part?

Damn, I bet movie studios love chumps like me.
Why did you have to link to that article, man. I'm going to be pissed off all day now.
And the worst part is, there is nothing anyone can do, other than to hope against hope that a non-idiot will win in 2008.

That sounds super cool. Is that all in-house stuff? Does something like that exist in the form of an SDK?

Well, honestly, why the hell do you need email that old? Step back and see if you're just being a pack rat.
If there's something critical, print it out, and then nuke it.

You need to line your closet with sheets of asbestos.

Two A-list titles at the launch of a system? Doesn't make sense to me...
I was just about to post that same article, a real classic.
I'll miss phrack, but the released a new article about once every 18 months. It had been suffering from neglect for a while now.
Pants officially off!
