It's not an excuse, it's a question to the statement of how it would be a tragedy that a species holding some cure were to go extinct. It would be. but..
How WOULD you know if an extinct species were the source of some panacea that would aid a current or future disease. Perhaps a species could also be the source of some virulent "future plague"?
I know I wouldnt mind seeing the swarms of mosquitoes where I live join the 99% of all other species that have existed on the planet during its history.
"It would really suck if we killed off some kind of plant that was going to hold the key to solving a horrible disease of the future."
Indeed, but then again, if it's gone, how would we know, especially a disease in the future? Quite possibly happened already---maybe dinosaur egg shells held the key to curing AIDS, cancer, and baldness?
11:00 - Sci-Fi friday over, full stomach, nice buzz, ready to hit the town
Sounds like an ideal evening. However, at my age, I substitute "bed" for "town", and add "If I can get the toddlers to bed before 8 at the beginning".:)
Yeah, I was being facetious-- a bit of a reference to the "infamous" EA management style
I know exactly where you are coming from---more than I care to think.
However, I had forgotten that if you have anything to say on slashdot you risk the wrath of humorless and/or ignorant moderators who would rather mod down than take issue with what you say.
Actually, they were always a bunch of hypocrites (aka politician), it's just that they replaced the former bunch of hypocrites. Eventually, a new batch of hypocrites spouting crap that enough voters want to hear will replace them.
I'd like to believe that someone could start a third party that was somewhat sane, open to compromise, and totally honest, but it'd be like throwing people to sharks in today's climate, and even if that party could launch a candidate that was competitive enough, the media would kill it because it breaks their head-to-head competition ideals and they'd have to come up with new debate formats to deal with it.
And even if they did manage to get past those obstacles, no one would vote for them anyway. (well, maybe they'd get at least three votes--):)
And that problem is that by outsourcing anything, whether it's to an entity in the same country or to an entity in a different country, you are intentionally throwing away control over the process in question.
I completely agree. Especially since I used the same argument during an analysis of system options.
I take it that you are not in senior management?:) Many of our systems are totally f(&)(d up because they could not see past the alleged $$ savings on the spreadsheet. Oh, and when a payroll doesnt run or an interface fails for the n'th time because someone at the outsourced host forgot to start a process, the lost productivity doesnt get counted against the alleged $$$ saved.
Ive had personal experience with outsourcing, and the cost savings are there to be seen on the spreadsheet.
However, things like the hourly cost of highly paid functional experts clustered around a phone during a conference call with a developer all staring at each other saying "Can you understand what he just said?" "What was that?"; "Can you say that again?" isn't one of the cost items.
Hmm, didn't like him/her? ok, the labor is cheap, clueless management says let's get another one. Oh, guess we'll have to wait while they figure out what is going on. (yep, true story, I wish it wasn't)
was? guess you aint coming back eh? :)
Well, assuming they dont find ways around the time limit (multiple accounts etc), these farmers will be soon be replaced by others. (unfortunately).
"I just can't justify wasting 4-5 hours on something that does not benifit me educationally or financially."
You must be very, very tired.
"*sigh* You're right. It's safe to say we're all doomed! DOOMED!!!!"
Well, the odds are not in our favor---extinction (whatever causes it) is the rule, not the exception, and the sun only has about 5 billion years left.
We had better start looking at space colonization NOW!!
It would be a real shame if one of those extinct species held the secret to interplanetary space travel.
"I don't think "not knowing" is a valid excuse"

"When are game companies going to learn? Quality assurance and play-testing should not be an afterthought!"
They blew that budget on executive bonuses, sorry.
Nor can you tell me how much you missed the point anonymous asshole.
yeah, just as awesome as two stressed overworked parents.
This isn't the "Hi honey, I'm home" 1950/60 era anymore.
More's the pity.

and so it goes.

Once they file the 10K there will be a better idea of the cash flow and the MDA (management discussion and analysis).
Nah, once a python, always a python!! He's just relegated to non speaking roles.
IIRC, John Cleese referred to the parrot sketch in his eulogy for Chapman. "He is no more" etc.

yeah, unfortunately, even then the $$ will go to the PHB's who think that putting a known voice on a game is going to sell more copies.
Ive never bought a game because "insert current popular star name here" featured as a voice actor.
Take the money you would pay these actors and put it towards quality testing up front and less time towards patching buggy releases.

Fox news? Is that a FPS or RPG? :)
Nope, that would have to be GTA.
I think all magic missile and fireball deaths might be attributible to D&D, however.

and do you think that is a good thing?
Also, I would like to raise the point of ethical obligations, but I doubt anyone's listening...
True, and in the unlikely event they were listening, understanding the concept is another story.
