The problem here is that even if SVG is not intended to fill the niche of flash, It has been presented as such by many many people.

The original poster was presenting an opinion that is hardly rare. I have encountered a fair few open source zealots that refuse to run flash and claim that if you need that functionality, use gnash(built without mp3 support of course) or SVG. Both of which are far from ideal.

This does present a real problem. There is very little drive for an open spec alternative to flash. I have done some work in this area, and you would not believe the number of times I've heard "Just use SVG"

It should be possible to make something speedily executable on non-x86 with just a few restrictions and a bit of instruction-metadata.

Importantly. The spec is much simpler than any existing VM model so an open spec with multiple implementation methods should be quite feasible.

If you look at some of the things people are making with mircocontrollers, you can see that something Apple II level is quite achievable.

Getting under $12 is difficult for one-offs but if you make a huge number it is easier. For example one Parallax Propeller if $12.99 but if you buy 5000 it's $7.53 (leaving $4.47 if you are going for a $12 box). The AVR has less power than the prop but still way more than an Apple II. if you directly drive a video signal from the processor, it costs you quite a bit.

I've seen sources for sub-$5 keyboards, sticking a microcrontroller inside the keyboard gets you a computer quite easily. At that sort of level the bigger cost is just getting cables and power supply.

In a way, they should be using the zx-80 as a guide. A bare bones design like that with a decent micro ath the heart would be fairly usable.

You seem to be implying that the OSX display is X. OSX supports X11 but does not use it for it's own native stuff.

From a programmer standpoint I don't much like X. I hate having to work though many layers of libraries to do things. The windows GDI lets you draw to memory bitmaps that you create. The Seperate memory spaces of user and X make things like that a pain in X.

The strongest argument for free will is that people feel they have it but there are experiments to show the feeling is an illusion.

Just because you are not sleepy doesn't mean you don't need sleep.
