If he came by my university, UC Santa Cruz, I think he would not be verbally attacked. Not in an abusive way, but I think the professors might ask him questions that make him look stupid. The School of Engineering here is almost entirely Unix based and almost all (or all, I'm not sure) the professors in the School of Engineering run some flavor of *nix (Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X). I remember worrying about having to use windows for my CS major when I got here, and quickly learned that you do not need anything windows. In fact, having windows just means you need to use cygwin or putty, instead of using an OS that does all that stuff natively. I think if Bill were to come here, he might regret it as many of the professors here have relatively high reputations in the CS research community and are very anti-Microsoft.
From the first day of my Operating Systems class:
(This is all from memory from six months ago)
"How many of you use a Unix based OS?"
about 2/3 of the class raises their hands
"How many of you use Windows?"
the remaining 1/3 raises their hands
"I hope to change that by the end of this quarter."

I hope that most universities are like mine. I could not understand how a professor of Computer Science could actually use Windows. To me, it just does not compute. In that case, Bill better choose his route carefully. Hey! Thats probably why chose to go to Wisconsin of all places (It was one of those sad places they use Windows maybe)!
I think having a phone with all the neat features on it is really cool, but I don't see this as a troll post.
I would probably rate your post as flamebait. I don't think this post has anything wrong with it. It is relevant, has an opinion, and is written out in proper English.
I think a phone that is just a phone is a very important thing to be able to buy and be something most people know about, however it isn't advertised by any phone service, nor do most people know about them. Just us folks here on/. While I think that the neat features on new phones are cool, they need to advertise both or at least have it out on their website as an option and have a display model in shops. Unfortunately, this is not how it currently works, so I think this guy's post is relevant.
Another thing: Don't you think its kind of crazy that a simple device such as a phone is getting a virus? I mean, these devices used to be really simple, and now they have all these features. Sure, a lot of people, such as myself, are willing to take that risk to get viruses, to have cool features on a phone, but many people are, understandably, against that.
I think this guy was perfectly valid in his statement, even if it has been said many times before. I'm sure there are angry rebutals to most of them too!
I agree. I am lazy. I should probably turn the Firewall on on my router like you. But, isn't the fact that nothing bad has happened as a result a testiment to the fact that Windows is a much scarier OS to run? I mean, yes, I probably should have more security, but the fact that it runs pretty well without it all is pretty good. In windows (I had XP on my PC for a couple years with Virus Software, Firewall, Spyware checker, etc), you have to install all this software just to make it run properly. It should be a precaution, not anything more. A just in case. But when viruses and spyware are all but a certainty, thats just unacceptable.
Although, I like how in order to use Windows properly you have to be paranoid. On my Mac, I don't have my firewall on, I don't have a virus checker, and I don't need a spyware checker. Admittedly, my computer would probably have more viruses if Mac OS were more main stream, but first of all, I have the OSS community behind me a lot more than MS does and having that is way better than having MS behind you. One company is not as good as the whole world of hackers (and I use the version of that word that is without negative connotations). Second, even if I did have to worry about getting viruses, I still would not have Spyware. Spyware is a result of a poorly designed Operating System. Any OS is destined to have to fight viruses, but having to deal with spyware is just asinine!
I just don't understand why someone would want to run windows when to run it there are all these things you have to do just to keep it from getting overrun by malicious code.
You can set it up in the first place for them to be a one button mouse. This is cool for us IT people because it means that when we go there, we can make a 2 button while we are there and when we leave set it to 1 button mode again.
Unlike what the article says, at least for a while (a year I think), HP cannot make its own MP3 player or sell another one, because of a Non-Competition agreement they made with Apple at the beginning of their iPod selling. I mean, it is possible that they decided this period of time without an MP3 player for sale was worth it for what they would do after, but who knows what will happen at that point.
I think its time to use this technology bundled with some AI and create some smart elevators to predict when we will need the elevator and be there right in time (hopefully it won't get too depressed)!
My sister's boyfriend is doing this (for friends and family free of charge of course). God bless technology! He works at a job with lots of movie geeks around and they're all drooling over it.
I had this problem too. When I tried to install a new language, it required the CD even though I am positive I told it to install everything possible previously. Installing new languages in Word is a pain in Word. It is NOT just a simple install like it should be. Specifically, I was trying to install Japanese if it helps on my friend's computer.
Virtual PC was recently added to the list of software bought out by Microsoft. For those of you don't know, it emulates an x86 machine. Currently there is no hardware acceleration support, but the new version coming out I think at the end of the year will have this feature. The Xbox 2 has a processor similar to the Powermac G5....
What does this mean?
I would assume that this means they bought out the technology not only to be able to sell it to Mac users themselves, but also to use it for the Xbox 2 to emulate old games since the first Xbox uses a PC processor.
What would happen if you knocked on every port within a certain range (like 100 at a time or something) simueltaneusly and knocked 10 times or something?
If you have skills but no experience, this is a way to get something on your resume.
Wow, he responded.....unlike, some other developer team I know....(cough, cough, Blizzard, cough, cough)......
Thanks a lot Sid! Very insightful.

Although remember that OmniWeb is based on WebKit. That is, it essentially is Safari with a different interface.
I think he meant that he doubted it would communicate the names of the people on the compact disc back to earth.

Just interested, cause I want to invest some money in it and i want to know when to act on it....
