What I don't understand is why they don't realize they've created their own monsters. We've been conditioned to (over) consume. Is it any surprise that when we have the opportunity to get what we want (TV, music, moves) for nothing we take it? Thats what consumers do, take what they want in the least "painful" way possible. Sorry movie, television, and music, this is your mess. We know you're not going to take your ball and go home, time to start looking ahead rather than whining about the past.
Having recently written a few papers on the topic I've read enough research that shows a correlation with violent video games and aggression. What these little news bites don't tell you is that the aggression if often very short lived afterwards. None of them make any link to violent behaviour. They keep telling the same story, violent games make kids aggressive and by implication violent.
I have yet to see a longitudinal study to see if games lead to life long patterns of aggressive behaviour.
A couple studies suggest aggressive kids are attracted to aggressive games which makes it a direction of causality question. One paper looked at students in Belgium and the Netherlands and suggested that socio-economic status played a role. The poorer kids did worse academically. They were more prone to playing video games as a way of achievement and gaining esteem from their peers.
I can't find where I read it, a credible source reviewing school shootings found that there are stronger links between violent books or movies than video games to violent events
Through a friend I used to get to do a lot of focus groups. At one for a clothing chain we were asked how important we though it was that the clothes were manufactured in Canada (where I live). Everyone on the panel said that it was ultimately important, except me. I argued that when it came down to it few people actually buy domestically produced goods and that obviously it doesn't matter. I got into quite an arguement with the others until I pointed out that they were all wearing clothes that were not only not made here but were not even Canadian brand names (DKNY, Gap, Tommy Hillfiger, Nike, etc). They wouldn't let us leave until I conceded that buying Canadian was important to me.
This got me thinking about the nature of the focus groups, don't the companies know the opinions they are getting what people say not necessarily what they do? I suspect that the scans will allow for more accurate polling. You could ask a group of women if they like a half naked ad, they may say "no" but their brains might tell a different story.
There's an older one about the delay of the Game Cube that could easily have X-Box substituted in. Honestly if you didn't see this one coming a mile away... well just read the comic and have a laugh.
Why is it everytime something big about anime is posted some moron goes: "Why is this news? I don't see how this is news for nerds or stuff that matters". Why can't people accept that sometimes there are different types of geeks out there? I may not like the articles about Online Privacy when they are only about the US (being that I'm Canadian) but I don't care that they are there. Maybe its something people haven't learned: IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T READ IT MORON! Why on earth would you take the time out of your day to write some lame response to a submission you didn't like anyway?
On another note, does anyone find it ironic that the series play might be cancelled because of unrelated violence? Being that it wasn't aired entirely the first time in Japan owing partially to violence. Apparently a bunch of students brought knives to school and stabbed their teacher "because" of something they saw in anime. I watched the series on DVD under violence: drove like a maniac to buy it and threatened to hurt my room-mate if he got in the way of the TV.
For someone who claims to have no strong feelings he seems to be veiling them poorly. I notice a lot of the language he is using implies a certain amount of anger over the situation. Its hard for me to put my finger on it but something in the back of my head says "Whoah this guy is really angry over this and is trying to hide it"
You don't really see the Gnome camp doing this (or do you?) and they seem to have a good healthy attitude of competition, which is what I expected to read in this article. Yet it seems a lot of bitter resentment (note the bitterness in the "wasn't this the hacker desktop" comment)
Any Sociology or Psyhcology types care to comment?
Yes, I am a Gnome user only because when I started out I thought that it was "shinier" and "cleaner" looking than the stable and application rich KDE. Everything I have ever read intended for Linux starters says to use KDE because its more robust ans stable, I guess I just like the look of some things regardless of how unstable (which explains why Windows is still on my system)
This is the sort of thing that I have wanted to see for a while. I always wondered why we can't just add in a card to accelerate some peticular function of the computer. For example when 3D video cards ( ie Voodoo) were add ons to the basic system. I'd love a sort of generic card that you add special processors/embedded systems to to accelerate something. For example maybe math processing is really important to you so you add that in. Maybe DV is important to me so I add in that chip. You could make Quake accelerators that are designed specifically for that engine that would speed up server functions. Is this not a cool idea? I want more customisation in my system!!!
This is one of the few times I wish there were moderator points for stories. I would hope this story would be voted to -1 (I set mine for 2).
Not only is the story/rant off topic but completely misses the point of this ruling. As a resident of BC I find that our provincal government is quashing a personal rights and freedoms on a daily basis. This ruling doesn't surprise me coming from a goverment that when it can't pass a law makes it a Worker's Compensation regulation. They have actively gone against court rulings on subjects because they didn't agree and wanted to push laws through. The ironic thing is that we protect our children from violent video games so they are safe to go home to parents that beat them. What sort of logic is this? They pay lip service to "protecting children" but they won't hire more social workers to help kids. They just want Band-Aid (tm) solutions to these problems hoping people will go away feeling something has been done.
I whole heartedly agree that games should have descriptive warnings on them to allow parents to make choices but I don't think that this is allowing parents to do their job. It lets the government do our thinking for us because "they know best." Let me decide how to raise my children and I'll let you decide yours.
We are a province reduced to the level of children. "Won't somebody please think of the children" I believe I've heard that phrase mentioned a couple times on Geeks in Space (You guys want to comment here?)
To the author of the vegan rant: What an ego you have to think that you know better than Mother Nature. Who made you god to decide who lives and dies? Eating meat is part of nature and we as human animals are part of that cycle. While I agree that our treatment of animals is abhorable, I don't think flying in the face of your own nature is the way to do it.
Additionally why are you picking on the plants? You must be a low specist person to kill and torture helpless plants in the name of saving animals. (once again returning to the concept of who made you god)
BTW: I don't eat veal for "cute animal" hypocritical reasons and often go vegetarian for a week because I like it. Food is not moral. I am a strong believer in nature and I hate extremists like "vegans".
"Fukui-san" "Yes Ota" "I spoke to the challenger just now and he was sad about the whole incident. He said that 'if that the Iron Chef didn't want the word of mouth advertising that sites like this provide then it was his perogative.'"
I know what you mean. Local papers in Canada tried to stir up a fuss about the song being nominated by printing letters from people who were offended and thought the song was racist. In the past we weren't so touchy, heck the song is really making fun of the Americans anyway, yet some people can't let it go.
I think the best person to sing the song would be Anne Murray just because it would be terribly ironic.
Matt & Trey: If you're reading this, don't mess with the song we love it the way it is.
A friend of mine was at a friends place when he said something which seemed to "activate" his Mac. He was told that it responded to voice commands and he simply had disengaged the screensaver (or something). So my friend being the genius that he is starts playing around with commmands. He cuts and pastes text and then says "This is cool, what would happen if I said shutdown?" and it proceeded to shutdown. To this day I won't let him near my computer.
Suppose you make guns. I don't care any type of guns. Now suppose a couple of stupid kids decide to shoot up a high school? Sound familiar. Are you then to blame because someone did something stupid? What about a hammer. I have used a hammer many times, however I still can bang the hammer on my thumb does that mean I can sue you because I screwed up?
I think you have missed the point. A gun has a primary purpose, to maim or kill. A hammer has the purpose of driving innanimate objects (nails) into other objects (through wrists and into wood). The intent of the tool is shown through its design.
Dear Mr. Police officer I am going to run at least 10 red lights and speed 145 times in resendial zones in the next 6 months please revoke my liscence now ok?
Proposing that you are going to commit crimes is different than doing or admitting you've done crimes. They really can't get you for saying that you are going to speed, they just have to wait and catch you when you do.
If you don't open your big mouth you get into less trouble that way.
The classic mistake that "hackers" make is that they can't keep quiet about what they've done. "If you do something cool and no one knows about it then it can't be cool."
Why should every story be questioned because you felt that Double-Think was a really good idea. News is news, it should just be reported. Let the reader make up their mind.
They're talking about the MST3K Movie where Mike crashes the Sattelite of Love into the Hubble and while attempting to remove the Hubble from the hull he trashes it.
As of Jan 1, 1999 it is legal in Canada to make copies for personal use. Prior to that it was theoretically illegal to make copies at all (as in the States)for any reason. Of course this came about in regards to a sur-tax on recordable media that they still haven't sorted out (something like.50/15mins) but had problems (DVD-RAM's would be expensive, the disabled, the implication that recordable media was going to be used for piracy) Good to see that we are still evolving the recording industry laws.
Check out Brute! Propaganda Site for KMFMS. Now given that it belongs to someone else but I just wanted people to see it. Cuz Aidan Hughes is too cool!
Companies are going for a more decentralised system anyway. You have someone who has all the knowledge make demands and you either cave or suffer. Its so much easier to hire a new guy every so often so he doens't have a chance to make himself indispensible. Most of the time you can even get the old guy to train the new one without him knowing that he's training his own replacement. Just wait a couple of months and make up some lame excuse like an industry slow down and bye-bye old guy.

I wonder if this is going to end up like the Salem Witch Trials? Supposedly it ended the second they accused the governor's wife of being a witch.

I think they should be allowed to transmit anything they can pick up (what I feel is the spirit of the law)
Are the damn americans going to stop transmitting things that invade our airwaves? I saw if you can pick it up them its yours.
I'm sick of them trying to tell the world what they think is right.
