I like those too, but I don't want to subscribe to Emusic (a good deal if you want to pay) and Magnatune doesn't really have some of the music I want. I looked through some of the catalog and they have a decent selection of independent labels. Arts & Crafts, Matador, Merge, Asthmatic Kitty, Young God Records are among those I saw. While some of them have some pretty popular artists, I would really lump them into mainstream music. Then again, I don't listen to music on the radio or watch mtv, so I don't really know who is mainstream anymore.

This thing is great. Once the kids see the flashy colors, carry bag and stylus, they will drop the iPhone in droves! It looks like an interesting project. Competition is good, but I have a feeling that an "open" phone will get the OMGTerrorists!!1! label from AT&T in partnership with Motororla. I hope this one gets off the ground.

I never see ads when I use Tivo's 30 sec skip. That you have to redo the hack after a reboot (admittedly almost never) is bullshit. But I can take the 5 seconds to press Select, Play, Select, 3, 0, Select. Instant 30 second skip anytime you want. This is also good to use during a boring minute or so of a show.

For people interested in managing productivity it might be a good idea to think about providing a desk per project rather than a desk per person.
I did this when I was in graduate school, albeit on a much smaller level. In my office at home I had a "fun" desk and a research desk. It seemed to keep my different projects and my mind straight.

The program works great, but they prominently display a notice saying that it is an unofficial workaround until an official version is released. From the site:

DO NOT SHARE COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL. This is intended for your own private use to play TiVo files on your Mac until such time that there is an official way of doing so.

However, the forums state that development will continue for now because of the price!

  8. Re:has anyone tried parallels for linux? on Choosing Parallels Over BootCamp for OS X · · Score: 1

I have been using it for about 1 month to run Ubuntu for about a month. I have no real problems, the only drawback is that Parallels does not provide a handy script to share a folder between OS X and ubuntu. I am sure that there is an easy way to do this, but I have not investigated because it is not really a drawback for me as the files I am accessing are on a webDAV remote share. Boot up is snappy, you can map the Virtual cd-rom to an .iso, so install is speedy. This is on a MacBook (trusy white) 2Ghz with 1G RAM. YMMV

  13. Re:How Do You Do It? on Retina Blood Vessels Predict Common Fatal Diseases · · Score: 1

My employer (medical field) uses the Optos system to capture a wide angle view of the retina. This allows almost a 200 degree view, where normal dilation resuts in about a 30 degre view. If you ask, they will email you copies in either high resolution JPEG or DICOM format. The DICOM format allows you to see the same 'layers' that the doctor sees using some free tools. These images are really quite neat. We even have had a few artists that wanted copies to use as base for new works. They ususally only charge about US$30, well worth not being dilated and you get a cool picture.

Talk about your privacy concerns. Microsoft will know not only when you watch TV but also which channels.

While I agree with your concern, how is this different than your current upstream provider? I am not a network guy, but I believe that whether you connect through LocalTown ISP, university, or Global Mega Corp, your HTTP requests travel through someone's router. I am not sure about your television habits, but as far as privacy concerns go my internet sessions reveal much more. Now targeted ads might be one concern, but this could be a good thing (I don't need a car, please stop yelling at me :)

  15. Re:good point on Music Exec Fires Back At Apple CEO · · Score: 1

This is interesting. Is there any history of people selling used digital music on eBay. It should be legal, the same as selling a used CD/DVD if you do not retain a copy. Maybe provide a signed note swearing that the remaining copies were removed from your system. If there was any challenge by RIAA, etc. it might prove to be a interesting case. Someone could set up a site to sell "used" digital music and challenge this. Of course there is the problem of ensuring that it is merely the transfer and not duplication of data.

This would also be great for when you can't quite undestand something and would like to hear it again. I have taken it to the jungle, the beach, Dozens of College footbal games, as well as lending it out to friends an family. Still works fine. I have several prints on my wall at 5x7 they are great. 8x10 is ok, but you will have to do some filtering in photoshop/GIMP.
