Despite the fact that, as you say, everyone who buys a Playstation knows it will only play Playstation games, it shouldn't be illegal to modify it (it is YOUR personal property now that you've purchased it) to play whatever you like. The illegal functionality you mention was already illegal before this and there were laws in place to handle those instances. There was no need to also outlaw the mod chips, especially when there are legitimate uses for them.

They may not even have to do that. As I understand it, and IANAL, employees have little to no expectation of privacy at the office. I hear this argument all the time, but I just can't buy into it. You're telling me that in 4 years of OS X, NO ONE has had the urge to write a Mac virus just to show us smug Mac users that we're not any better than the rest of the computer using public? Sure, maybe the damage done wouldn't be as widespread due to a smaller installed base, and maybe it would be a lot more difficult for viruses to propagate, but come on, not once? Out of 6 billion people I can't believe one virus writer hasn't popped up wanting to be "the one who brought down OS X."

First of all, it IS possible to only purchase used CDs, in which case the recording industry wouldn't get any more money from him. Whether or not the original poster actually does this remains to be seen, but in response to your post, assuming that's the case his statement doesn't sound nearly so hypocritical and self-serving anymore.

As to your comment on who will create the next UT when no one feels like paying anymore, someone always will. There might not be as many huge blockbuster productions anymore, but there will always be talented musicians, artists, film makers, game developers, etc. who do it for the love of the craft, not for the promise of fame and fortune. It may not justify downloading music or software, but it's not a valid argument against it either.

What's stopping them is the same government intervention that will (hopefully) force them to offer an a la carte plan in the first place. If they are forced to do so, but offer a plan with charges disproportionate to the current "everything at once" plan, I'm sure they'll be forced to lower the a la carte rates to something closer to comparable.

Secondly, this is one of the few complaints about OS X that I've actually agreed with. It was a great feature of OS 9 to be able to run an app from any folder on the drive. I haven't reorganized my apps in OS X since that's not the "right" way to do things now, but it would be nice if I could.

Loosing market share and shrinking margins is usually a pretty sure sign a company is in decline.

Losing market share is actually not a pretty sure sign a company is in decline. Market share is only a ratio of the number of your products sold to the total products sold in a market. You can sell 10 widgets one year and 100 the next and still lose market share if UltraCompuMegaCorp's widget sales go from 20 to 2000 in the same amount of time.

Whether a company makes a profit, however, is a pretty good indicator, and it's something Apple has been able to do for the last several years. I'll believe Apple is dying when I see a big "going out of business sale" graphic on apple.com.
