Yeah, that's what I've concluded, too. I got my TI-83+ Silver just 6 months ago, with the knowledge that the TI-84+ wasn't too far down the road, and with that knowledge went and bought the 83+ SE anyway. The only real differences I see between the two is that the 84+ has a new casing, and the link port has been replaced with a mini-USB port.

I think I pretty much have an 84+ already, despite having a different link port and casing.

I know I'm not comfortable at all about listening to someone else's music thumping through my head unwillingly, whether in public or at home, as I find it not only distracting to my work but also very counterproductive when I'm trying to take a break from a very long day... sort of a "psychological rape" perhaps, after being forced to listen to someone else's thumping bass for hours upon hours in my very own home.

I just don't want to add to the mess. I don't like it when I have to deal with it, and I don't want to make anyone else feel miserable either.

  12. Why couldn't they get it right the first time? on Tech Titans Prepare to Battle Over Next DVD Format · · Score: 2, Interesting

I can absolutely agree that DVDs are far superior to VHS, and certainly superior to Laserdiscs as well (our movie library was heavily based on the LD format in the past before DVD), and yeah, I know that its already been argued that it's a bunch of crap to force consumers to convert their entire movie collections yet again... but my complaint lies with our current format of DVD and how disappointed I have been with it. Here's my list...

    (1) Why do we still have so many different display-formatted DVDs out there (full-screen and wide-screen)? How difficult would it have been to simply make every DVD the same, and to supply a set of panning instructions to the DVD player itself to specify what visual portion of the movie will be displayed in full-screen mode?

    (2) Going off the same idea as #1, why couldn't these DVDs have been set up to be HDTV compatible in the first place? I realize that HDTV has a higher resolution and whatnot, but... how hard would it have been to force DVDs to meet the HDTV standard and simply resize the visuals for non-HDTV televisions? Hell, it might even encourage people to go and buy a HDTV if they knew they could further increase the visual quality of their current (and already paid for) collection...

    (3) You think this new format of DVD is going to be a pain in the ass to consumers, forcing them to switch over yet again to adopt the newest of the new? DVDs have made this jump once already... when dual-layer discs hit the market. No, the single-layer DVDs I had weren't worthless at all, but let me tell you... I wasn't too happy to know that I'd have to go buy a brand-new $300 player just to play dual-layer DVDs.

    (4) Also, why aren't all DVDs compatible with all the different DVD players out there? If DVD is a standardized format and all, why am I still finding a movie every once in a while that works in one player but not the other? I never had disc compatibility issues back with my VHS and LD players.

    (5) Now... this last one is just kinda nit-picky, but... regarding at least half of the DVDs I own, I absolutely hate their menus. Half the time I can't even tell what I'm selecting on the screen, or even know what all my options are. I know being unique is good and all, but why should a DVD that I purchased with my own money feel so alienated to me? Why must I solve puzzles to go through everything contained on my DVD?

As far as I'm concerned, the DVD was something that had very great potential but didn't quite live up to what I wanted. Will this new HDTV DVD do well, or like the format before it will it end up wastefully in a landfill along the side of "useless" cell phones and computers?

  13. Finding that perfect formula on Making Your Own Board/Card Games? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I too have been interested in creating board games myself, at least in a digital form... I never honestly considered actually designing them into actual retail games...

However, I agree... creating original games that people will want to play and enjoy, even board games, is a really difficult thing to do... to find something that hasn't already been done. I've come up with plenty of board game concepts in the past, and with many revisions/sub-creations from other ideas... and while the game formulas do work, are very original, and are actually fun (to myself at least), I often question what kinds of minds beside my own would play them - would you have to be a strategist, a math whiz, have a high school diploma at minimum, or what? Often I find my ideas are very great, but its hard to find something that a broad variety of people would want to play, as opposed to targeting a small, limited audience... and with such limitations, would the game actually be noticed and/or sell?

  14. Microsoft steals/finds a new business model! on Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5! · · Score: 1

"But wait a minute, 5 doesn't come after 3!", exclaimed one of the officials.

But after closer examination of this new addition to the Winamp family, they discovered its deep, dark secret:

    "Gasp, 2 + 3 = 5! Yowza!", they squealed with glee.

In their final conclusions, Microsoft found there was no shame after all in resorting to something so old, something that ran better before and crashed 0.04% less. With this realization, their software engineers were immediately hard at work to create the bestest OS there ever was...

...thus Windows 193 was born! People danced in the streets, DOS nuts went crazy, Microsoft Bob was hot stuff again, blah blah blah... use your imagination and make up your own ending.

I'd gladly give up a freedom or two to a certain degree to ensure the safety and well-being of others.
