Based on his wow site I would be willing to bet that this man has never written any serious amount of code. Juts a feeling... but I would not expect him to contribute to your calculators source code anytime soon.
An open source cell phone wouldn't fix any of your problems... there isn't secret software on your cell phone... imagine a huge company trying to keep a secret like that... the equipment has simple physical properties that make them easy to assist in snooping no software required. A basic vase in your apartment could be used to pick up sound remotely using some basic physics.
I was playing last night with Cedega and was having no problems at all. If its a problem it's probably with very very new cedega software or very very old Cedega software.
It's a little ironic that Quebec will allow electronic systems to manage 911, fly planes, and run medical equipment... but not the smallest piece of software to manage their elections.
For what is probably the most liberal society in North America... Quebec in my opinion is really playing the ignorance card on this one. This is yet another example of why computer literacy in the political arena should be no longer a "recommended skill" rather "required".
I hear what your saying... and I will admit I only disagree on principle... it's how I feel... so by its nature It may miss some rational. Here's my response to yours
1.) The protections you discuss of clearly only given to my employer. In general the benefits you discuss don't fall into the hands of the common worker (IMOP: this is why will find some resistent here at slashdot... it's normally average jane's posting... not company owners).
2.) From my perspective I will probably lose my job one every 2 to 4 years as the market fluctuates... I get no long term benefits of my work (unless it is in the public domain) I just get to look for a new job.
3.) The companies that may reform from a collapse of another will not necessarily be better... and I am fully aware of this... I myself have only ever worked for one company I have felt was a "competitor"... the rest in hind sight probably deserved to collapse.
In my non-GPL'd work life... If i could enjoy all my prior art when I move from once place to another... I would maybe agree with your argument... rather I in general I am asked to reset and move on with my career... crippled with missing work from the past... as most of my employer's hire me to do the same type of work... in the same sectors.
I find it funny how companies struggle to make money by constantly trying to shift what should be in the unrestricted public domain to be something that is not. Companies deserve to protection when using public domained source and information... they should be simply focused on quality of service delivery. If they become protectionist because they cannot provide a quality service/product... then they deserve to collapse... a new business model will arise from their ashes...
Sorry a small type-o in my post...
Listen dude ! What your saying isn't convincing us! And it's especially not gonna convince your boyfriend... see you in the "singles guild"...
I have only ever used gimp... and found no need to use anything else. The onsite documentation is pretty awesome as well, and easy to follow. I think anyone reading that is in doubt of its quality should take a walk thru the different tutorials on the gimp www site. The only bottle neck I found is understanding "layers"... and the different filters (lotts of info online fo these though). I don't see why anyone would complain about this tool.
There's a company in Ottawa thats been doing this for years... albeit for adult images... i believe there is a flash demo on the page...

As a developer when i see a company do this... I seriously quetion if I can refuse to participate in my companies work in pursuing patents for my work... b/c if the company was to ever collapse (not being a business person) I could be crippling my own future at other employers... imagine switching jobs and being your new company being sued by a "defunct" company you used to work for...
I had a co-op job a long long time ago in a company not quite bankrupt yet... they tested different voice encoding algorithms at this company... they found that different noise cancelation algorithms were better for different environments... google may simply be taking environment samples in order to provide better performance on VOIP... allowing them to apply different algorithms based on your environment.
This is not necessarily a 'big brother idea' it could be simply being done in order to provide higher "QOS":-) I wwould wager this is no more dangerous than having a 'cookie' on your www brower.

Clearly this is posted by one of the studies subjects :-)

Last I checked cows made themselves? There's really not much need to spend money on this kind of science for food supply is there?
