Thats funny because one of the CSR's said to me onetime that no little girl ever grows up wanting to work in a call centre. And yet the call centre is full of them. When i was a kid i wanted to be an astronaut. Kids have all sorts of unrealistic dreams. No one dreams of paying the rent or car insurance when they are a kid either.
Most jobs are nothing more than "pushing buttons". Thats the way the world turns. Many people, all pushing their little buttons. A career just means you get paid more to push your button. Oh and you also get to look down on everyone who pushes a button for less money. Thats the main reason people go to college.

"That said, I would far and away rather games be too easy than too hard;"
Um where I'm from, the harder a game is the *better* it is. I read that line and the one about 15 hours of gameplay and thought, wow.. this is why i dont play offline games. I was going to download this game even, on account of the trailers, but now im not so sure. What kind of game reviewer thinks that a game being easy is a positive point? Easy to understand, easy to get the hang of sure, but easy puzzles? easy fighting? sounds lame to me. Easy is for n00bs.
"a direct presentation of facts or description of events without an attempt at interpretation""
Theres no such thing as an unbiased fact. Everything is interpreted. Misinterpretation can be as simple as omission. I thought the whole point of journalism was to be as subtle as possible with your slant, so that people will think its "unbiased". Theres no such thing as an unbiased interpretation.
Its really very funny and apt. He could have used nice instead of friendly, which is probably a better word bt its an internet comment so come on. The main point still stands. An AI could outthink and rationalize in weird ways based on what safeguards you would give it.
Incidentally, this is the same philosphical issue that was explored in 2001:space odyssey. A machine has no emotion and can be ruthlessly efficient and calculating. Could you out think an AI? or would it just find some logical hole everytime thus requiring you to hardcode in "do no under any circumstances kill more than x number of people". Even then a ligitimate situation could arrise where you would need to kill x+1 to save the greater ammount of humanity. A deflected asteroid onto a smaller city to save a bigger one for instance. He put it into a funnier note but its the same idea. Im surprised all the humor and meaning was somehow lost on you.
We also make fun of aol users and various other n00bs. Whats your point? If the majority of people think something is lame, then a comunal consensus can be reached that it probably is lame. This is one of those things that defines a community. We can all pull together and slog emo kids. For the good of the community of course.
And seriously... myspace is like 50% fourteen year old girls and 50% emo kids. Have you ever talked to a 14 year old? an emo kid? that is what you would waste my pron and torrents bandwidth on?
"Not that a power failure should ever happen in a datacentre anyway. All of the ones I've used have had multiple power feeds from different suppliers, entering on opposite sides of the building, plus redundant UPSes with diesel generators for when the UPS runs out."
I guess you've never had some stupid dell tech overload a powerbar which causes the circut breaker to flip killing the power -redundantly- to your live database server eh?
"Motion detection and wide-field vision are a characteristic of prey, not predator."
Um you may want to re watch jurassic park. When the childrens stand still the t-rex cant see them. Thats why they dont get eaten in the ford explorer but the eye comes down and looks at them. He cant see them as they are not in motion. The t-rex is clearly a predator.

Are you trying to say that you dont shop in stores that dont let you bring a *gun* into them?
This gets my vote for comment of the day. What possible reason do you have for having a gun in a theatre? To go all elvis on the screen? "Aw shucks, this show aint no good" *BLAM*
No officer you dont understand, i was just taking my M16 for a walk....
Yeah keep your mouth shut, thats the way a good little sheep behaves. But lets look at what exactly this practice entails. From wikipedia:
""The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner's face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt. According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda's toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last over two minutes before begging to confess. 'The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law,' said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch." "
So honestly.. you knew that was going on and you wouldnt speak out even if it means your job? If the only reaction you have to something like that is "i dont like this" then you dont deserve any respect as a civilized human being. Do you want this happening to you? if you answered no, then its torture and anyone who doesnt speak out as loudly and as oftenly as possible untill the practice has stopped, is in my view, a fucking coward.
Because it has to do with my and your right to do a particular thing online?
you know you can read it as "your rights, online" and also as "your online rights" right? Why do people complain so much about yro. Is it just a reading comprehension problem?
Well youve obviously never been friends or aquaintences with crack heads then (albiet meth is close). A crackhead cares about nothing. They will lie, cheat, steal, sell you out to the cops -anything- to get money for more crack. Ive known some heroin addicts too and can definately say the crackheads are far far more decietful and have nothing resembling human decency, respect or honour. Crack next to probably meth is the worst drug out there. Arguably, it's problems come from it's illegality and if every neighbourhood corner store sold it legally, it wouldnt be as much of a problem. I am not sure if that argument really works for crack and meth though. Even if a dose only cost a buck, im sure crackheads would run up to the tollerances of several thousand dollars a day. Ive never met a crack head that didnt want more crack. I have done it. Its ass unless you get addicted, and then its worse because you are just taking it to feel normal. Made me nauseous and lightheaded actually. I would not recomend it. Just pay the money and get real cocaine instead. And never NEVER listen to that one friend that says "but dude if we cut it we'll have 5x as much cocaine" because you wont.
I was going to try meth, but a walk through my neighbourhood seeing all the people who look like they are anorexic, and have put multiple ciggarettes out in their faces changed my mind about that. Meth is also why hitler lost the war, so thats another good reason not to get addicted.
I think he was more aruging different solutions for different jobs. Its pretty easy to run windows streaming on IIS and was probably just they way they did it. Its a large mistake to think that just because someone picks one solution for one of their problems that they should universally apply that soultion to all their other problems. I would be very surprised if the same people who were responsible for making the robot were the same ones responsible for posting the video online.
Blindly arguing for linux with basically no context at all is lame.
"Bearing in mind that we call such free marketeers "pirates" and "terrorists" and toruture and shoot them." For now. Give it 5-10 years and there will be more than enough anonymity devices to protect anything the State considers deviant thought or action.
Thats the most weak and naieve thing ive ever read. Have you considered the possibilty of you being shot or locked up long before such devices - which would certainly be illegal to produce, distribute, possess - come into exsistance? Not to mention the idea of retreating into a secret world where i have to closely watch my behavior in all public (and private?) places. The idea that you think of it being nessecary to carry around some sort of anonymous framework to protect yourself from going to jail is so stupid i cannot even comment any more on it.
You're right. People here know the difference between a game and reality. You were probably looking for the 'man hating dykes who think everything is misogynistic' room. Its down the hall to your right.
"or even from 2k to XP (better support for a lot of hardware)."
This is a lie and you are spreading FUD. Support for hardware comes in the form of drivers from the software companies. Just because microsoft writes some of their super special drivers doesnt mean that the os is devoid of support if those super special drivers arent there. No major hardware company has dropped support for windows 2000. Theres a good reason for that too, the underlying layer hasnt changed. In win2k its just not loaded with all the extra buggy crap that xp is. XP is like shit smeared over a marble fascade.
The one superficial difference is that win2k doesnt have a wireless client built in. As every wireless card ive ever seen comes with its own wireless client, this is not even an issue. 2k is the best operating system ever made by microsoft. XP is buggy as hell and makes way too many decisions for you...
I assure you, i cannot go and put my BMW's engine in my Audi and have it all just "work"
[Intercom buzzes. Dave presses button.]
Secretary on intercom: Excuse me, sir, your beautiful and intelligent wife is on the phone.
Dave: Oh. [Picks up phone.] Hello. Uh- huh. Well why don't you take the blue Porsche, well then take the red Porsche. Well what are you wearing? Well then I suggest you take the BMW. Do you love me, uh-huh, whatever. [ Hangs up.] So go on, you had- a thought?
"They choose to ask you operate to your own disadvantage for the good of us all."
Yeah and we CANT HAVE THAT! can we.. Asking americans to be the slightest bit altruistic, why thats MADNESS!! I'm an american and i should be able to piss all over the rest of the world. Its my god given right don't you know.
This is why people hate america. No honour, no accountability and certainly no "personal responsibilty".
"But we do see it, because it is news (to somebody?) because this unreliable approach to scanning is mainstream. How the hell did that happen?"
Malware became more prevelant so companies have convinced users they can remove it themselves, taking away the incentive to take your machine to a professional to do it right. As most people do not have a second "clean" pc at their homes, a feel good solution (which i would argue is pretty effective if you run multiple tools, in safe mode, etc...) was developed for the casual user. Most malware is pretty easy to diagnoise and fix on a single pc. Id imagine real rootkits would be completely undetectable and therefor the home user would not even know they had one. Most people dont check for bombs in their cars before they start the engine every day, so its unresonable to assume that they would pay possibly hundreds of dollars to have a professional check their computer in what probably is not a manifest problem.. untill its too late that is.
You arent smarter than viruses and spam. Thats why we have automated tools to help in detection and removal. You're basically saying that humans are infallible at detecting "bad" content. You are giving humans WAY too much credit. In alot of cases machines are far better at heuristics than humans. Especially non technical humans who are exactly the sort that need the most protection.
Complete rubish. Hitting or kicking something to make it work is a tried and tested tradition in every maintence occupation.

Companies talk of thinking different, while others actually perform different. Tip of the hat to yahoo who may strangely become relevant again.
