With the two options being shelling over fifty bucks for a game (assuming my hardware will run it and I don't have to buy a new knuder valve) or a six pack and a night of gaming with a friend...
I agree with your post, but don't forget about demos, which also, at times, gave me great insight of what a game was like (for example, the BF2 demo made me buy the game, after skipping on the first part, BF1942)
Hehe, this story reminds me of my first time playing America's Army:
Before you can play this propaganda game online, you first have to complete a few courses/trainings.
Those trainings are supervised by an AI General, who, as they seem to do in the Army, shouts your ears off with several commands he wants you to do.
After about one minute of this guy's shouting, I became fedup with it, and instead of using the weapon I was given on the target range, I decided it was payback time... So I shot the General:
To my surprise this would load another map... which would conviently be a prison cell... with no way out (other than restarting the course-mission).
I highly recommend DoomRPG to anyone who loved Doom back in the days, and who likes to see viable alternatives to playing first-person shooters on a mobile:
The designteam clearly noticed the limitations on a mobile phone, and instead of playing the game 'real time', it's now turn-based.
This obviously makes aiming not to be important, and instead the player is given different stats as he levels up through killing monsters/fullfilling objectives.
As said, get this game: It's been worth its money for me for sure.
Q: What role will original game concepts play in next generation development? A: (Todd Hollenshead) Technology is a gating factor to the experience of playing games. Whether it's visual quality or character interactions, you have to have the processing power to make more sophisticated and interesting entertainment. Certainly the next generation of consoles in the Xbox 360 and PS3 are far more powerful than their predecessors and that gives game developers broad options to do things we haven't been able to do before and provide experiences for players they haven't had before.
Ahyes: the expert... what about the Revolution though? Funny if you talk about the change in next gen consoles, and then leaving out the -only- company that's really trying to come forth with new ideas/experiences to play games.
For example, for our next generation Wolfenstein game, which uses the Xbox 360 as it's primary development platform, we are developing technology that will change the way people play First Person games by doing away with the whole concept of 'levels', which has been the primary progression mechanic every first person game has used.
You're not unique,Mr. Hollenshead. In fact, the Unreal engine announced thise feature -ages- ago (streaming level content on the fly, thus creating endless levels without loading). Nice feature nonetheless.
But you should take a look at nikker, as that's the true translation of the word 'nigger' in dutch: Which takes it back to 652 hits.
Anyways, someone stretching the term 'human rights' to also include calling out racist remarks/insults, is ridiculous. At least the Dutch can have their own choice considering the use of soft drugs... Something the world could learn off.
So how are they going to convince Firefox from withholding me from automatically sending me to the 'I am feeling lucky'-Google-link when typing in a word in the Navigation toolbar (as it does right now).
I think this idea makes no sense, aside from trying to grab some quick cash.
F.E.A.R. captured best FPS nod at the SpikeTV VGAs
And we should take this seriously, why ?
SpikeTV also awarded KingKong (the game)... A game that would not be out for another two weeks... A game they said was rated -by the public-...
Anyhows, F.E.A.R. -is- an excellent game (one of the best single player games of the last years imo), but judging a game on SpikeTV's awards is ridicilous.
As soon as you get your game through Steam, you can backup it on any media (CD,DVD): It then creates an auto-installer which will install the game which can be played offline WITHOUT going online.
As for the Source Engine. As an owner of a copy of Half-Life 2 I have to say its an awesome graphics engine. I've been a fan of Unreal Engine series for a long time and haven't seen any other game that could surpass what Epic has been able to do, but the Souce Engine easily beats it. There are some scenes in HL2 that look absolutely photorealistic. I'd say Warren's use of the Engine is a good idea.
Have you seen the next gen engine of Unreal though ? (Have a look here for some nice videos displaying total awesomeness... visually;)
Have a look at the site for the sequel to Sin, Sin Episodes: Why would one have to worry about cartoon-like graphics (with the Source engine)? It seems they pulled it off ok.
Also, Ultimate Spiderman had the cartooney-cellshaded look very right.
you don't need loud, fancy graphics, you only need enough information for them to identify your product (text)
I think there are still alot of people around that 'prefer' (or, are tempted more) to click on those silly animated banners, than the text-ones by Google though.
Lately I am getting loads of pop-unders in Firefox, whereas before(let's say, two months ago) they were never there: Anyone knows a solution to this (besides turning off Flash and Javascript) ?
It was the first console FPS that was actually playable with a decent control mechanism.
I would think Goldeneye was also very playable on the N64.
With Halo, it wasn't so much the control mechanism that made it work for consoles, but more the leveldesign, as most of it is played on the 'horizontal level' (with lack of a better word/term), so most of the times you'd only have to change your view from the left to the right.
I also played a bit of the PC version of Halo, and because there wasn't much (anything?) changed from the Xbox version, it was quite boring to play with a keyboard/mouse.
I always thought that Halo's been a bit overrated. The flagship games of, for example Nintendo, have way more character to them, and defines a bit of the company to outsiders : And yes, I am actually one of those gamers that really likes the fantasy (some would call it kiddy) themes that Nintendo employs in most of their games: Because of not having strict rules in those virtual worlds, they can get away with alot more than in games that try to resemble real-life.
I won't be surprised when in a few days there will be an announcement how Sony's rootkit causes world hunger, rapes dogs, and hides one sock out of every pair every once and awhile.
Does this make them evil yet?

Definitely had my chuckle that day :)
Er, mobile phones ?

I totally agree with you, and after some googling around I found more people with the same opinion.
They misspelled 'porn'.
...are there actually any experts on He-man ?

Should I be shouting Mod parent up now ? ;)

On the day of release I happily played it and to this day still think it's worth its 15 bucks.
Er, got the link screwed up: http://www.unrealtechnology.com/

So did Timothy Roberts get rid of his... phobia yet ?
Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another crackhole.

Step 1: Dye
Step 2: Bleach
Step 3: Rinse and repeat
And for hippies Step 1a is unmissable : Tie dye.

Damn you Sony !... Oooh, shiny PS3 !
