Call me a troll, but I find this "work of art" to a freakin' waste of the artist's time as well as my own. Congrats.. You took some shopping carts and linked them up. (..in an unoriginal way, I might add.) I'm suprised this made it to the/. frontpage. But hey.. If you thought that was impressive, you should see strand of DNA built from soda cans!
First off, the world is in the midst of one of the colder times in its entire 4.6 billion year history. So get off of your high horse and check the facts. Ya' know there have been plenty of times where the planet has not had ice caps. And guess what.. plenty of life lived and survivued during these periods.
You're absolutely right. There are numerous things that can occur while hiking and we can't prepare for all of them.. even experienced hikers/mountaineers. (I am neither, BTW.) However, that risk is inherent to the activity and anyone who thinks they can go hiking willy-nilly 'cause a park ranger is kinda watching has another thing coming. If there is a forest fire, then you shouldn't have been hiking when it was so dry. If it floods and you get caught in a ravine, the question needs to be "What were you doing in the ravine?!" and not "Why didn't the ranger rescue me?" Ya' know? I guess this just a continuation of my politicalleanings, but still. If you venture out into nature without being properly prepared or capable, then tough shit, man. I'm sorry, but you should have been prepared. It's harsh, I know, but if a lion picks a fight with another lion that's twice his size, you don't see his pride coming to his aide.
I would call/. an "active discussion" whereas a blog is simply the random thoughts associated with one or two (or three or..) random people who you've never met. At elast here we're discussing news/tech stuff and not just posting about how our closet-homosexual boss made a pass at us.
I say don't bother. I mean, at what point do we as a society start relying on ourselves for our own protection? I don't mean to be a troll here, but man.. you get lost in the woods - your problem. I absolutely expect the inevitable "Well, what if you get lost out there?" Then I get lost and need to rely on my own navigation skills to get me unlost. I am a human being. I have the strongest freakin' brain on the planet. If I can't use it to determine my general location and bearing, then I'm practically useless. But, of course people who aren't so self-reliant venture out into the woods, too.:-\
So yes, keep it private/anonymous. Make it voluntary. If a hiker sees a little tracking station, require them to place the tracking device within the sensor's reach (like within a meter or so). I do not want people "tracking" my movements through what is supposed to be a wilderness.. away from the daily grind and away from uber-advanced technology.
Eh.. What does it matter? I just completed a five-minute proof that P == NP! Have I had it reviewed yet? Well, no, but I guarantee it's correct! So now all I need to do is tell someone other than/.
But other items available on KaZaA can be. But hell.. why not music, too? I mean, you can hide messages inside images (stegonography). Why not music? It's all a stream of bits, no?
Of course they won't. Once it has been released into the wild (courtesy of Napster v1), you cannot contain it. Too many people have used it and enjoy being able to download most anything they want. You can shutdown individual services such as Napster, KaZaA, etc., but as soon as you do, another will popup. The demand is simply too great. Those who work in any type of media are going to need to develop new techniques to deal with the digital world. Encryption is not the way to go, either, as anything that can be buil by man can be unbuilt/cracked/hacked/whatever-you've-got. If that means the death of the major record labels, Hollywood, or the like, so be it.
Whoopety doo.. 437 lawsuits is it? And how many people did I see co nnected to KaZaA the other night? What? A million you say? Let's see. Up to now, I stand a scant 0.0437% chance of being sued. I think I'll take my chances.
Upon building my first house, I plan on pumping the walls of my home with static noise. Sure, wireless networks won't work outside the house or anything, but eh.. in the house is good enough for me.
Exactly.. In fact, the Earth is in the midst of one of the coldest periods in its history. I get tired of this global warming crap. Of course it's going to warm up! There have been times when there was no ice on the planet whatsoever! It's a natural freakin' cycle. The enviro-hippies need to get off of the bandwagon and do a little research.
How could it not matter? Unless they don't care about the weight of the craft as it goes up, then I would assume you would want every possible boost you could get ahold of. Launching from the equator doesn't mean you must achieve orbit or anything. But I'd imagine simply going up at the equator is easier than going up at the North Pole.
I live in Nevada, too.. Las Vegas to be specific. Despite the recent state tax hikes, I'm still happy to be living ni Nevada where taxes are still relatively low. As for this internet sales tax, the state can kiss my ass.
Eh.. Why pay $0.99 / track (even though it's relatively cheap) when you can download the same music in MP3 format for absolutely free? The RIAA and those companies maintaining online musics stores need to get with the game and realize that it wouldn't take much to push people back into "illegal" file-sharing. Hell, my little sister and my 40 year old mother (who's not exactly a techie) don't bother buying much music anymore.
The music industry needs to adapt to the digital amrketplace. You cannot hope to utilize the same distribution and sales schemes you did 10 years ago.
Yes, the closer you are to the equator the less fuel it will take to power a rocket into orbit. Basically, when a solid object is spinning on any given axis, all points on the object have the same angular velocity. However, the parts furthest from the axis of rotation must be spinning faster to maintain that angular velocity at that point. Go outside and spin a basketball or something on your driveway. You can witness the phenomenon right there.
This increased velocity is utilized by space agencies to save a bit on gas.
I've never considered Pluto/Charon a planet. The two are obviously captured asteroids albeit large ones. I view planets are bodies that formed out of whatever nebula formed their local star and were born in an rather circular orbit. That's a rough sketch of my opinion, I guess. Pluto/Charon do not appear to meet these criteria (but what do I know?).
Now, I see Sedna in the same light. Doesn't pretty much everything in the Oort Cloud as well as the asteroid belt between Earth and Mars orbit the sun? Why aren't we calling them planets, too?
I would like it if I didn't get Notepad and Calculator (and all other bundled software) when I install Windows. Let me download my own text editors, media players, et cetera. Just give me a damn operating system.
What's wrong with a company pushing people to use their products? I am not a fan of Microsoft, but why shuold they be forced to include third-party software?

I hate blogs. Why must everyone in the world think their thoughts are a veritable goldmine of entertainment? I don't get it. :-\

437/1,000,000 = 0.000437
0.000437 * 100 = 0.0437%
I do believe my math to be just fine. :-)

I thought we had already covered this. Must be a slow news day..

IMHO, the best overall programming methodology. Again, just an opinion.

Didn't Al Gore invent Bigfoot?

And a holographic projector so you can watch all your movies in 3D without a screen!
