It really depends on the type of user IMO.

I've developed quite some professional software packages. The users to-be are involved in the process as they will have to work with the system. You just don't want them to lose time and get frustrated cause your software doesn't feel intuitive or has unnecessary confirmations or steps to have a simple action done. (which action might occur quite frequent in a day. It starts as a small frustration and eventually they HATE the thing, yet are forced to keep using it cause it has cost alot to design. Which could've been just a simple placement of a button or some 20 extra lines of code for you.)

But mostly they KNOW what they want and how they want it... And are willing to read through your manual to in the end work more efficient and save resources.

Joe doesn't seem to be willing for that. The "target user" and their desires is as well a more illusive subject when it comes to internet applications which are going to be used by millions or billions.

The whole "security"-aspect as well has spawn these applications which try to dumb down terminology, in an attempt to have Joe decide on complex actions to who the concept of that action in completely lost.

My tutor taught me; "If you design software, always take in account that a user will do everything he or she can do wrong, but never make them feel they're mothered by your application. Mother them without them knowing.

  2. Re:Surely he was misquoted? On both? ;-) on Google Maps Creator Takes Browsers To The Limit · · Score: 4, Insightful

IE already has this "install on demand" where a user has to confirm to allow a certain application to be installed via the browser.

The problem is though, many clueless users click the thing that makes it go away (cause they were promised something good before they clicked a link) which is the accept option. (certainly on pages which are persisting and force a page-reload until the user confirms) Allowing things to be installed which rather shouldn't be allowed.

A confirmationbox wont ever prompt you "Would you want to allow us to take over your system and do bad things with your PC?" "yes" - "no"

(many users would hit the "yes" if they were told they'd get a nice game in place for it, or that MSN will send 0.01$ to a sick child somewhere in a place unknown if they click the "yes" option.)

The problem is that they're able to "destroy" markets.

The fashion industry f.e; Not too long ago someone explained me how raincoats can be produced cheaper in the East as they more easily go into massproduction and crush the small guy overhere who cannot produce UNDER the price for fabrication.

After long enough, all the competition will be crushed, the East rises their prices and make their profit on their newly gained monopoly.

It's been a predictable tendency. There are enough people I personally know which have or are studying Chinese (I believe the study is refered as as 'Chinelogy') in order to be a step ahead when China or in more general the East will rise to be the greater economical power and the dominating influence in the world.

Face it, the US has been slipping away for quite some time now and is losing popularity at a troubling rate.

If I'm not mistaken South Park adressed the issue of the ever growing influence of the East quite some time back in episode 301 (aired on 1999-11-03) where the southpark kids get obsessed by Japanese Merch. Which turns out to be a brainwashing tool.

    • Cellphone
    • Keys
    • MP3 player / Ipod / PDA / ...
    • ...
In my case there're also some battery powered lights for my bike, some pens, misc junk..

Now, as a male it's totally uncool to wear a purse to carry all your stuff around, I wouldn't mind all of these things fitting in my pockets in a comfortable fashion (so being compacter). Instead of looking silly with a MP3 player hanging around my neck, as my keys on a string around my neck (really, that looks so wrong. At first sight this sounds like just a silly idea to generate revenue, and yet again flood users with damn ads making them all little consumer whores.

But if they do it subtle, I might be able to live with it; imagine a GTA where you walk in a store and actually have real-live brands instead of makebelieve boxes and packages, a real ad playing on a monitor (which you can shoot ofcourse ;). Or Billboards without the producers' logo or ads which make sense in the game-environment but real ads. (I wouldn't mind a hot girl on a billboard telling me to .. what now?)

It'd both would make the world feel more "real", give the player the ability to manipule and get a notion of it without it constantly being forced down your troath (killing the fun of the game, specially after repeated playing), and at the same bring more revenue to the developers without affecting gameplay too much.

The moment you will get *forced* to watch ads (time-outs in the game, and likes, where you do not have any choice but sit out the ad) it might work very annoying, and negative for the games I'm afraid. You already have that on webpages, which I don't give a second visit if there isn't any normal way to skip the ad and I'm being forced a behaviour (watching an ad). Not to mention that what is actually advertized isn't always available on this side of the world.

Where did you read Windows(tm)? A chip is quite something else as an OS that you'll run on your brain. Your brain and neurons will take care of things an OS would take care of. Call it brainOS or whatever. It operates your body, duh. It interacts with the "kernel" being your contience or what you perceive as "you".

A chip sending pulses to correct certain things going wrong between the "kernel" is quite a difference, it'd be rather an "enchantment" to the "OS" you already have, and to correct bugs oneself introduced (heardamage by frequent load concerts, eye meets pointy object) or which nature has introduced.

I can understand Bills' viewpoint; "I'm happy to have the computer over there and I'm over here.". And partially share it, as if you're going to build in all sorts of gadgets when there is NO need and it wont improve your life in any significant way (using your brain as a flashdrive for your MP3s perhaps compared to improving eyesight or giving someone who lost his limbs the ability to walk again) then I feel it's not required and it's just getting horny, hence losing a bit critical thinking, over the silicon. (not thinking about obsoleteness over time either)

Surgeon don't give a BSOD either. They do Fuck-up as well. Wanting computer implants solely for the fact it's "cool", "geeky" and you can be like those actors on various SF movies and series, then.. it doesn't do much justice to your intelligence.
