that's not what i'm saying. When linux started, it completed a certian kernel-lacking Free OS. There wasn't another one at the time. Therefore, people embraced it and we have our linux.
however...Free Operating systems are not a new idea, and we already have toys like this to tinker with. Also, i do agree that hobby oses have a niche. I just don't think that this story should have graduated from OSnews to slashdot, that's all.
With no clear advantage over other free unixes, why is this hobbyOS getting so much attention? i tried a beta disc a few months back, and i didn't see anything special...i mean, a one man OS is impressive, but i can't see anyone actually using it...
I was under the impression that gaim was ported to palmOS...guess i was wrong...do ya think somebody could still use the underlying code and just write a new interface using the Palm libraries?
exactly...many of the less niche geek items work for 'normals' also...everyone wants an MP3 player (heck force ogg on them!) or a digital camera...
you might even want to experiment with giving them some more geeky stuff...granted they are open minded...hook them up with an RPG if they are into video games...or independant films for wanna-be movie buffs (Welcome to the Dollhouse is a personal favorite)
I agree...after some Week long GTAVC jags, i find myself rockin' out to the local 80's pop radio stations in my car...it's disturbing how listening to a certian set of music for long enough makes you a fan...
yea but think of the possibilities...
they could set up public terminals at places, issue them to the workforce...and BAM...you're using the same computer everywhere...
if microsoft released the "Windows 98 Reinstall Update Pack", and sold it for a reasonable price (dream on) i'm sure it would sell like hot cakes...Get Bill on the phone!
I'd wait until Windows XP 64 is included in their bundle. That way, you don't have to pay an additional $ 199.99 or so for the upgrade when it comes out.
I read somewhere that you won't be able to buy XP64, much like Media edition. It will only come OEM'd on certian computers.
I agree, Support for OOo is VERY beneficial to the open source movement...and since that/. story on the open CD a few weeks ago, i've shed the Open light on several people, and opened up new options to those who might have never seen them!
If you search for Linux Quotes on google you'll find that linus has mad a lot of funny statements over the years...I always love reading his old mailing list entries!
true, but unlike windows, SKYOS isn't a default install on any computer, isn't advertised in mainstream media, etc.

sorry about the anal monty python fanboyism
i was thinking of that exact scene!
i kinda wanna buy Gods and Generals now, just to see if a game could really be as bad as they said...are they exaguratting?

not nessisarily...mine's formatted ext2, thankyou very much...
Not to mention the price difference...$199 vs $2k
The real issue is that they don't Realize that they are accepting a performance hit...
Knowledge is power!

even worse, they might install a counter so windows FORCES you to upgrade (or format and reinstall) after x years...

Good Article!
Ross it's woody...
Good review...i was lookin for an ogg player myself...cross the karma off the list!
how was this modded funny? i, for one, will not buy a digital music player unless it plays ogg, as my entire collection is encoded that way...
Yea, let's merge a feature from a product that didn't sell into the main line to force it down people's throats...unbeleavable...
or the assumption that software should come out slower than the hardware it can run on...
ahh the slashdot troll...
modded down untill it becomes a cliche, then modded up untill it becomes annoying, at which point it will be modded down again...
the cycle of life...
That is kind of an obligatory response...
