Why wait for them to get situated. iTunes shines in places other than iTMS - it's a full featured player/ripper/burner!
Seriously, I used to be a die-hard "I don't need no steenking playlists" person - but after having used iTunes when I got my iBook, I've never used another music app that holds a candle to it.
If you replace "Windows PC" in this article with "typewriter" and then read it again you'll see how it looks to a Mac user.
very well put.
I went to Fry's this past weekend to look for an external firewire case for an ibook that I'm getting for Xmas.
As an extensive PC user since '94 (not especially long, I know), walking down the PC case isle (where they sell bare cases) made me smile on the inside. No longer would I be cutting myself on sharp case internals, or plumbing cooling fans like warts onto ill-equipped hardware, or thinking Christ, will they ever make a PC that looks good?.
I work in computers (unix system engineer), so perhaps it's accelerated my disdain for all things PC, but this is one person who won't be looking back except to giggle.
Adapted to suit my own personal opinions about American culture. Don't agree? Argue the point about American culture, not the adaptation of a quote. Jesus.
Societies where everything if owned by the people (or government) are called socialist/communist states, and so far we have proven that it just doesn't work.
um no, you're wrong.
Maybe you flunked Government, but a society where everything is owned by the people would indicate a capitalistic government, while one where it's owned by the government is the communistic one.
Learn to spell, and age a few years before you regurgitate catch words that are popular with The Cool People.
so maybe I'm too much of a PHP noob, but what about situations where you're not so much reading from session variables, but, instead, you're building a table from data in a database.
The intertwining of code seemingly becomes necessary because you may need to provide a "seed" of html for something like a for() loop. So while you're shaving time off for not printing out each line of static html, it's html nonetheless.
Beyond that, the ability to jump out of PHP is for me, the only reason why I'd need it. I could just as easily write a Perl CGI which parsed template files. CPAN by itself would be enough reason to do this.
This is what I see in my head when I think about this:
A soccer mom driving a large SUV, popping a few more Prozac and Zanax on account of the fact that her fellow soccer mom pals will think less of her now that she officially lives in Conneticut instead of Rhode Island.
Jesus people, is this REALLY that big of an issue?
A friend of mine works at an LED distributor, and they sell a grip of these things...They have to, their spread is a very small angle!
While they're seemingly bright head-on, people pay a premium for getting them up to the same OVERALL output as incandescent, or florescent lights - while it might look cool, and seem futuristic, the price is prohibitively high.
Is anyone surprised at this? Try not to be so myopic, and realize that the school system of the entire country is in a massive crisis.
BTW, when was the last time you read a real book [non-O'Reilly], I'm sure that the National Reading Council (?) would probably return the same findings about literacy.
As technology gets "simpler" to use, the backend gets that much more complicated. To cover up for the interface, the automaticthisandthat, and generally everyhting else that makes the product almost operate itself, there's that much more technology, and operating instructions that went into building it.
UNIX is hard up front, but in that back, it's straight forward. Most GUI OSs (take your pick), are easy to use for the average consumer, but the backend is generally complicated.
This divide will grow wider and wider with the coming years, as will the digital divide of the people who can operate the devices, and those who build them - it's a logical progression.
As a sysadmin at a company who uses these Unices, I would recommend that the hobbyist stay away from them. They're cludgy at best. I figure that this'll fare well mainly for those that are stuck with them, and need the source (we are slowly migrating to Linux/Solaris).
I too used to fight tooth and nail against co-workers to prove that Perl really wasn't that bad. Having been forced to code in other languages at that job though, Perl is starting to look as bad as everyone was saying.
If you were to read the headline, Linux gets this in Q1 2002. WinXP is gold *now*, meaning that it'll be out before then. Beyond that, I'm running 2.2.18 right now, so yeah, that too will require a separate download.
unless your browser won't choke on a 14MB jpg (and most will), I suggest downloading, it's amazing.
just like the said poster below, this is ridiculous. read this link

but then again, /. is kind of a departure from reality in and of itself.

this phone has it.
with it, it can do all the cool stuff that you mentioned you'd "love" up top.
They'd prolly wanna use the Bill Gates Borg image. That would just confuse everyone...
Then the real issue here is whether or not the government will pay attention to these new findings - I'm betting no.

Shuttle's XPC for AMD
it's nice in the middle of one's day to read a well written rebuttal such as this one.
;)
mod this up, and have him replace Jon Katz

sleep 2 hours a day and feel great
I'm REALLY curious about trying that new sleep pattern, but oddly enough, I don't have the time to try it!
go and check out apple.com - the iPod is a portable unit. Try explaining how you'd lug those components around that you'd just mentioned.
I've always said this -

Well, since it's a charity, people can give money to whatever purpose they wish. Frivolous would be this money coming out of your taxes.
Also, being happy and enjoying yourself can help in the fight against disease.

I was under the impression that the moon had no atmosphere.
I could be wrong, but wouldn't that pretty much mean the sucking of any and all forms of water out into space?

If you're gonna bash MS, do it with proper logic.
(I'm sure this'll win me a modding-down)
