I wouldn't blame the copy protection for causing the "muddled" sound they are hearing... AACs and MP3s both seem to have a problem dealing with hiss and "ess" sounds... My guess is that because these types of sounds are pretty close to white noise, the encoders have trouble producing a compressed approximation of it. The unfortunate result is "muddled" sound at the point where a hiss or "ess" sound occurs. 128 kbps AACs from the iTunes Music Store have this trouble to some degree, as do most compressed audio formats at lower bitrates. These AACs definitely do reproduce sounds better than a 128 kbps MP3, but not much better than a 160 or 192 kbps MP3. Until Apple offers higher bitrate versions of their music, I'm not quite sure there is a way around this problem. I imagine that they won't be offering higher quality versions though, because that would offset their "x songs in your pocket" claim marketing claims for the iPod.
Yeah, I know there are much lighter lappies out there but this is the lightest one I have ever owned.
That is definitely interesting. Someone else told me a story very similar recently, but when they said "lappies", I punched them in the face and cut their balls off.
(That quote was blatantly ripped from an old Slashdot post... No harm intended.)
It wont install under the latest version of WineX - generates an error and stops the installation.
Give it about five or six years, and try again...:^) [ducks for cover]
(Note: I've used Wine since about 1996, and I know how it is... The fact that the Wine team got MS Office 97 working in two or three years alone was indeed amazing!)
Bzzt. Unfortunately Virtual PC doesn't work on G5s yet... Also, Microsoft hasn't given a timeframe of when they will have the problem fixed. Until then, there is always Bochs, which given the speed of the G5, might actually be fast.:^)
I wasn't aware of a version other than the German version... The version I have has English subtitles though. Definitely a great movie! Not too many action movies portray chaos theory in them, but this one shines at it.
While I don't work for Apple, I have a pretty good idea of what it takes to qualify. You must be a student or educator at either a university/college or in a K-12 school. Individuals are only allowed two educational software purchases from Apple per academic year (July 1 - June 30). Supplies are limited. Batteries not included. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE for details -- operators are standing by!
It has been my impression that the CMYK whiners have been wanting Pantone along with CMYK support... While CMYK is possible to implement, doesn't Pantone require paying for a license?
Keep in mind that while OS 9 won't boot on newer Macs, it still runs perfectly fine under "Classic" mode on OS X. There isn't a whole lot that requires booting 9.x nowadays, anyway.
May I direct you to Gentoo's PPC LiveCD collection? I have tried an older version of this and it works pretty well... XFree86 loaded nicely, without any configuration needed. It felt considerably snappier than OS X, but I think Apple is about to fix that when Panther (v10.3) comes out later this month...:^)
...on a PB G4 550. Finder seems a little slower than usual though... Perhaps they are slowing it down on purpose so that we are all pressured to upgrade to Panther?:^)
I watched 2001 and I want to go into space aboard a Pan-Am space ship!
...and stay at a Hilton space-resort. Go figure.:^)
It makes you wonder, is having Strauss' The Blue Danube in 2001 merely a product placement for the classical music industry? Or was it just Kubrick trying to make the movie more timeless? It is sad though that the Hilton and Pan-Am references detract from the timelessness of the movie.
About the strangest product placement I've seen yet is a Hewlett Packard logo in The Matrix... Towards the end of the movie, right when Neo jumps up and out of the subway track area, they show Agent Smith standing in the path of the subway train... Right before the train hits him, you can see a Hewlett Packard logo behind him on the subway wall -- it's the same color as the subway (I believe it was grey), but it's clearly distinguishable. Try viewing the scene in slow-motion -- you will begin to wonder how many other adverts like this were slipped into the movie!
Hey, why am I on your foes list? I never say anything offensive on Slashdot, you punk! :^)

That's the funniest post I've seen in a long time... "Would you like fries with your blinkenlights, sir?"

So now I know what that cop at the beginning of Run Lola Run was talking about!
If only Roy Horn had upgraded...
I wonder if this counts as zealotry or not...
I agree -- half of the write-up on Jobs was about how he ranked previously... It appears as if they were struggling to write the material.
Strike me down with a EULA, and I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine!
