Exactly. There's a difference between illegal and getting kicked out of a casino. Casinos don't like losing money. If they spot a card counter they basically just say, "If you leave in the next 5 minutes we won't have Bubba and Tiny throw you out for trespassing. Oh, and never come back."
This differs from legitimate winning because those types of winners are more likely to give those winnings right back to the casino. They're also more likely to excite those around them. Those losses for the casino are acceptable.
A better suggestion would be encouraging people to vote with their wallet and not give Microsoft the business.
The one thing I found really scary about the economy is that this isn't necessarily true anymore. Look at the Big 3. They made crap for so long and relied on their Landstalker models too much that when the gas prices went up and the economy went down, people did exactly what you're suggesting. They voted with their dollars and went elsewhere.
Guess whose money is being used to bail out the Big 3?
I must compliment them for not compromising size and looks for the latest fads. That way it's not a gimmick and you won't just sell it to the treehuggers, you can sell it to the masses.
No they don't. They hate us because we are the haves and they are the have-nots. They hate us because we don't do anything to help them out. Their hatred has little to do with freedom and little to do with religion and everything to do with poverty.
If you keep a group of people in poverty, make it difficult for them to get an education, give them very little opportunity to pull themselves out, you make them ripe to be manipulated. Religion is a great manipulator. "God says the reason you can't feed your family is because the USA keeps screwing with us. Take them down and our lives will be better."
Give people an education, give them hope that they can make their lives better and the problem goes away. It's harder to get leverage on someone that has something to lose.
Let's say you and your son are abducted by aliens. For whatever reason, they point a gun at your son and say, "Either will kill your son and everyone lives or we vaporize the Earth with everyone on it."
I would choose to vaporize the whole Earth. Because it doesn't matter. Everything we choose to do as a species is only seen subjectively. The good and bad things we do are judged in context of our culture. If we all get wiped out, there is no one left to care.
I never got the big deal about it. Slashdot is filled with people repeating this over and over as if it's the most obvious argument in the world for investing in manned space missions. But it's nothing more than a pipe dream.
Besides, who gives a crap if an asteroid plows into the earth and kills us all?
Next time you get out of the shower, don't look in the mirror or you could get nabbed for being a peeping tom... wouldn't surprise me the way people have gotten so unhinged with this issue...
Society has rules. Sometimes the rules are pretty hard to figure out but a large majority of us get taught the rules from a very early age.
I find it frustrating that the obsessive nerds that will sit down with a problem and not sleep until it is solved (for fun!) won't apply the same practices to interacting with those around them.
Join a group but for god's sake, if you don't know what you're doing, shut the hell up! Be polite, answer questions concisely, and, most of all, smile. Sit back and observe those around you. Be shy. Shyness is one thing. Being obstinate and abrasive is a completely different thing.
You'll get the hang of it with practice but just like any job, you can't jump in at the highest levels without learning the ropes first. And you learn better when you're listening and attentive.
I watch a lot of hockey and I know pretty much everything the players are supposed to do. I could just step right in on an NHL team and fill in. I'm that awesome.
You're one of those people that can break down music into its components and pick over them critically... you can explain the technique involved... you could explain music theory till dawn... but you sometimes forget that music is about emotion, feeling, and soul. "Cobain was a hack and could barely play guitar!" Yeah, but his music *meant* something to a lot of people and that's what matters. Same with the Beatles.
I'm aware of how science works. All the little steps add up to huge advancements.
I'd posit that things have value because we desire them, rather than we want things because they are valuable. Maybe that viewpoint stems from thinking too much of economies these days.
This is important news! I think these scientists should be commended for their efforts. Just having the audacity to pursue funding for such an outrageous and fringe topic is surely a rarity in scientists these days. After all their hard work it must be gratifying to have their results come to such a clear and decisive conclusion that will likely impact humankind for generations. Bravo!
Slashdot is news for nerds and nerds are typically well educated. Education is correlated with the left side of the political spectrum. So here you have an internet discussion involving nerds and I don't think it would be any surprise that the majority opinions reflect most of those you listed. There aren't many righties on here unless you count the libertarians, of which there are quite a few.
Whoa whoa... let's teach them instead to open every email attachment, that every website that wants to install an extension should be allowed, and to download as many **FREE SMILEYS** as they can. It's job security.
I just grabbed a Cacti virtual appliance from rPath. No installation required really - just load it into VMWare (you can also get isos) and configure it. No chasing down prereqs or dependencies. I'm not affiliated, just impressed with the ease.
I don't know. I just watched the movie "Ordinary People" again and while I realize Hollywood and real life are hardly anything alike I think there are some parallels here.
I can see where an argument can be made that being constantly looking for signs in your child's manners and speech can make the kid feel more isolated. If you're thinking everything your child says could be a sign of suicide... I don't know... it doesn't seem healthy for anyone.
What is the deal with Starbucks and their imitators burning their beans? Is it because it's expected people are going to be adding milk and sugar, etc to it? I like a nice black cup of coffee and as such, I find Starbucks pretty undrinkable.
Asking to tap a person's phone is probably a lot more routine than "Excuse me, could just install a couple things in that closet over there that you're not using? Oh, and let's bring every call through that closet while we're at it."
Have you seen the entire footage of the exchange between Joe and Barack? Obama took a great deal of time to explain specifically how his plan would affect Joe's desire to buy this company. Frankly Joe looked a little stunned.
I never understood the flag obsession either. I especially don't understand when people equate flag worship with patriotism.
The flag is a symbol. You don't show your patriotism by planting as many flags around you as possible. You show it by standing up for the ideals that the flag represents - free speech, free religion, free press, equality, etc.
I truly wish people would take more pride in their country rather than taking pride in their flag.

Seriously? Letting an animal indulge in its instincts is "inhumane"? This is what cats were bred to do.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing a couple million pounds of water has much impact on the geologic energies stored up along the fault.
I'll bet what actually happened is that all the Chinese jumped at the same time.... that would definitely do it.

So we never escape Earth and the Sun blows us up.

You're implying that this had to be planned. No need for it... the opportunity arose for Cheney to make some cash and he did.

My custom anti-virus solution is better. It blocks 100% of all known and unknown viruses. Just don't ask what its false positive rate is...

I take it you're not a Red Wings fan, aka the Swedish National farm team.
