  1. If it can... on Hardy Heron Making Linux Ready for the Masses? · · Score: 1

Run PlanetSide, Half-Life 2 and still allow me to interact with the rest of the world, then maybe we have a deal. At the moment Best Buy doesn't have a Linux games section or a Linux hardware section. i won't switch to Linux until those sections are AT LEAST as big as the Mac section. Until that happens, Linux is a toy for computer nerds, not a windows replacement. OO.o isn't ready to replace MSO. Also, which Linux? There are dozens of flavors of the month. The ubiquity of Windows allows me to be competent with 90+% of the machines i'll ever encounter in the world. The Linux community needs to dump the flavors and focus their efforts on ONE distro. i don't want to have to relearn how to use a computer when i go from one machine to the next. i desperately want to switch to some Linux, but it just is not ready. Stop saying it is.

One can't learn while having fun, i know this because i'm very smart and educated and i loathed every minute of school. It was good enough my parents, it was good enough for me, and dagnabbit, it's good enough for kids today. All sarcasm aside, having learning being fun might prevent them from learning discipline. The discipline that it takes to do things you find boring so you can make a living. i'm not sure if that is a good lesson or not, but most people don't enjoy their jobs. If they did, they'd have to pay to go to work.

  7. Re:We're all wondering... on The Texas Petawatt Laser · · Score: 1

It's not capacitors, but it is similar. Lasers have an "active medium" that stores light energy, some media can hold more of a charge than others. You can keep pumping in more and more energy and then release it in a pulse. They measure the beam by how much energy comes out during the pulse. Imagine making a shotgun shell, adding one gain of powder at a time. When you fire it, the energy all comes out at about the same time, creating tremendous power. That's a layman's explanation given to me by a laser engineer. i work for a company that makes lasers, my cube neighbor just explained to me how it works.

So you're up to date on the new stuff. There are a few things in the works. Not sure any of it will matter. Merging Markov and Emerald would stave of the final death for a few more months. The battles just aren't like they used to be. My outfit used to have 90+ troops on a raid night, we're down to about 30ish. i'm hoping something comes along to replace it. MMORPGs are just too much work and all the stuff i mentioned initially were a turn off for me. The new CE and hacking stuff is pretty awesome. They just need more folks playing. i think they should have a free subscription were you can have only one character, or you're capped at BR 10 or somesuch.

Angsty kids write blogs. Using a blog like interface or posting daily, does not make it a blog. The nature of the content makes it a blog.

If you are looking for a game with very little grinding, no farming, no twinking, no buying in virtual stuff with real money, 100% PVP, that values skill over not having a life and cooperation over soloing, i recommend PlanetSide. It's a sci-fi MMFPS. Instead of straight jacket classes, you have certifications that you can load and unload if you want to switch from being ground vehicles, to aircraft to ground pounder. Higher level characters have access to more items and vehicles, but it the same stuff a lower level character can have. Levels give you wider choices. My Lasher does as much damage as your Lasher. Three empires engage in a 24/7/365 war for territory that spans continents (islands, really). Give it a try, if you want something radically different.
