If you work in health care, at a law office, in insurance, in a financial institution or virtually anything else heavily regulated by the government, you must keep paper copies of most of your stuff. You just can't have a paperless office in those situations.

The iPhone may be the best smart device on the market, but the "phone" part of iPhone is severely lacking. My boss and a few family members have iPhones now and ever since they got them, they suddenly started dropping calls left and right. Sometimes the boss will have to borrow my cheapo Nokia because we're on the road and he can't get a signal to save his life. Now keep in mind I might be biased because every time the boss has to borrow my phone I get a half hour of him telling me how much he misses his Blackberry. I'm personally really interested in the iPad and increasingly find myself in situations where a smart device would be handy. But as long as the iPhone sucks at actually being a phone, I'll stick with what I have.

How many people do you think fired up their cassette player or VCR in the last year? What about an 8-track? Hey, when's the last time you listened to Beethoven on a wax cylinder? Magical Mystery Tour and Gone With the Wind live on because they're available in the newer formats.

Classics are timeless and that's partly why we have things like the Wii Shop and the 360 arcade and PSN. Hell, the two examples you listed are STILL available on current consoles (Sonic and Ocarina).

They are experiences worth having. That's exactly why I like it when consoles support backwards compatibility. You get all the upside of having a classic game on a console that you don't have to drag out of a box and hook up every time you play it without having the buy the game over again like you would at Wii shop or whatever. As much as I love the Beatles, if I had to dig out a record player every time I wanted to listen to them, I would listen to them far less than I do. If you want to consider that a lack of appreciation, you're more than welcome to, but I have a hard time believing there are people out there who appreciate Saturn Bomberman or Legend of Oasis more than I do.

  11. Re:Fake Difficulty on Game Difficulty As a Virtue · · Score: 1

"Fake difficulty" annoys the crap out of me in Madden. I'd like the AI difficulty in Madden to be the difference between going up against a Jerry Glanville coached team vs. a Don Shula coached team. Instead I get a team that rolls over and plays dead vs a team that consistently gets huge passing plays even when I make the best call on defense to stop them. It's really annoying and the Madden Karma (like if you go for 4th down and fail, something BAD will happen to your team in the next possession) only makes it worse.

"If you own the previous consoles, why does every new iteration have to have backward compatability with everything that was ever released for the whole line?"

It's nice to think you'll play your old console when you get a new one but it's my experience that it just doesn't happen. My NES and SNES were given away to relatives with younger kids long ago. The rest of my previous consoles are sitting in boxes in my basement. But I still have a stack of Gamecube games upstairs sitting with my Wii games and the Gamecube games actually get played. And I've even picked up a Gamecube game or two since I bought my Wii. I barely touched my Saturn once I bought my Dreamcast even though I consider the games I own on the Saturn superior to the games I own and still occasionally play on the Gamecube. Backwards compatibility didn't factor in to my decision to buy a Wii, but it's really nice to have.

And more throughput leads to more money in my pocket.

You can argue "real" and "good" if you want, but there's more new sci-fi television coming out now than there probably ever has been. I'd call both Lost and Heroes sci-fi. And they're both major shows on network television. Also, on the other side of the pond Doctor Who has had a revival in a very big way. It's on hiatus for now but will be back on or near December. But the two spin-offs are both airing new shows. There's a BSG spin-off. Dollhouse survived another year. The V revival is coming. The aforementioned Stargate...
