"As for musicians, we are left to wonder how many more people could be listening to our music if it weren't such a hassle, and how many more iPods might have our albums on them if our labels hadn't sabotaged our releases with cumbersome software."
Actually, my iPod had music I stole off the Internet not just because of rootkits from Sony. It's because:
- Prices for CD's were really high here in Canada (until recently when the labels drop their pricing to make CD's more "affordable").
- I want to buy music online. While iTunes has decent pricing for music. Their DRM restrictions leave me a bit cold (although they are more liberal than the rest).
- Most of the time, I don't have a compelling reason to buy a CD. Not with all the cookie cutter artists out there.
Sure rootkitted CD's have cost the music industry some sales, but there's other facts at work here.
...... that people could be lining up to sue RIM as they perceive that RIM may be weak on the patent front? Basically, this lawsuit (and any that follow after it) are simply companies fishing for cash?
"I would think this "Smart Box" would get hacked way too easily, leaving car companies without their money."
From TFA:
"Buyers sign forms acknowledging the Smart Box, agreeing not to tamper with it and promising to return to the dealership for a free removal after the last payment is made."
That implies that screwing with it in any way will get you into trouble if you get caught. That's not to say that somebody won't try, but it also implies that they have a means of catching you.
..... for the MPAA. It's a great headline in a press release, but one has to wonder how many people haven't already moved on to something else...... It's sort of like closing the barn doors after all the horses have left.
.......where the CSI team has to find the killer of a outspoken anti violent video game crusader who angered a group of geeks with his irational activities.
....is what has their experience been during this migration? What are the things they've tripped over? This sort of info would be handy to combat the FUD that the PHB's have stuck in their heads.
Also, is this the largest migration to an open source environment that anybody has heard of? That piece of info would be nice to know.
"the technology they used contained a security vulnerability of which they were unaware"
Which is why you beta test stuff BEFORE you release it. Otherwise, you risk getting yourself in these situations. Just ask Microsoft.
I wonder if this does have some degree of merit...

Dell Finally Goes for AMD
·
· Score: 1, Interesting
.... As Dell recently missed their forcasts with Wall Street and their stock took a pounding as a result. They're going to need a new stream of revenue to keep their shareholders happy. Going AMD *MAY* be the best way to do that (assuming the rumor is true).
The old school practices of bullying artists, acting like a they're the only game in town, and thinking they rule the universe is over. The more they try to do things like this, the more we'll run to P2P, and everybody loses (except me who gets my music for free).
...... as you can watch that Lost episode that you downloaded via iTunes over and over again. I suspect they'll try this for six months, not make any money and beg Apple to carry their content on iTunes.
After all, Microsoft is in a position to throw money around like 50 Cent in a rap video. This is simply a payment to make their problems not only go away in Korea, but to keep other countries from thinking that they can investigate Microsoft in the same way. The fact that the Koreans still want to investigate them is ecouraging, but not really meaningful IMHO.

..... the only state with such a law? If not, how common are laws like this?
.... The only people who will win are they lawyers. Makes me wish I went into law rather than computer science.
Free WiFi while significant portions of their population are still displaced and / or homeless.
Perhaps their priorities are a bit backward?

It's worth looking at.

.....That tells us how many people have hit the wall with Windows?
1. A deathmatch between the two parties. The last one standing wins.
2. Give both formats to porn producers. Whichever one they choose wins.
Simple isn't it?

There's nothing to see here. Move along.
