There were quite a few OS 9 (and earlier versions) viruses. Hell, a Macaddict CD accidentally shipped with a worm on it! I never got said worm, but I heard reports that it caused some trouble. There were others as well. OS X has yet to see any malicious virus. The two or three pieces of malware that have been seen for it are non-malicious proof-of-concept code that never went anywhere, infecting only a few machines.

We used portable Firewire drives (bootable) with various images on them. We'd boot from the FW drive, use Netrestore to image the computer, then boot the computer, update the firmware for Boot Camp (dunno if that's necessary anymore), then boot from a Norton Ghost CD and image the Windows partition across the network. Not the fastest or most autonomous way to do it, but it worked pretty darn well. Netrestore rocks.

Noanet is getting the huge cash piles because the Grant County PUD has to make sure their fiber network doesn't make too much or the IRS will come calling and start sniffing around an issue of tax-free bonds used for funding it, along with other potentially shady funding practices. Grant County was lucky to get Yahoo and Microsoft to build there, but the PUD is making squat off of it. If they had actually played their cards right from the beginning, they could have datacenters like this all over the damn county.

Despite the open-source fanboy clamoring, relatively few players support .ogg, including the iPod. Ergo, selling .ogg tracks severely limits the market, which means stores don't sell anything. Ogg is a nice codec, but it's not going to become a music player standard anytime soon.

  7. Re:Why not MP3? on Apple's Move May Make AAC Music Industry Standard · · Score: 1

Wrong! 1. MP3 has DRM-encumbered iterations out there. 2. As far as I know, Apple is the only one that sells .AAC with DRM, and these have the .m4p suffix instead of .m4a or .aac, so they're easy to distinguish unless some boob renamed the extension, which isn't too likely.

  8. Re:I don't understand why someone would buy Apple on Apple Ships 8-Core MacPro · · Score: 1

It might have something to do with Macs breaking down a lot less often and not having to worry about antivirus/antispyware. When I was interning at Central Washington University's computer support services, I found there was ONE Mac tech for all of the 700-800 Macs on campus. A few others would poke at very simple issues, but he got anything more than that. On the other side, there were EIGHT PC techs for the 2100 or so Windows boxes on campus. You do the math. The head of CSS loved the Macs and wished more departments would use them because they required so much less maintenance and held their value longer. The campus is busy trying to flush out any P3 computers they have so they can eventually upgrade to Vista (be a while considering some nasty compatibility snags they found in testing it). They're still using low to mid range G4 computers all over campus and probably wont upgrade them for a while because they have no need to. Not to mention the campus was spending $21k a year for antivirus license renewal. Your statement here shows a surprising lack of thought and investigation into why someone might want Macs for their businesses instead of Windows (or even Linux, although that's a very different arena) boxes.

And while this is more of a personal anecdote, my brother is a video nut and is very good at filming/editing. He's used a variety of software, but refuses to use anything but Final Cut Pro if it can be helped.

Sounds fairly similar to my internship at Central Washington University. There was one full-time Mac guy for all 700-800 Macs on campus. A couple others would poke at them, but they'd toss anything more than a simple problem to the Mac guy. There were about 2100 PCs on campus...and eight guys to cover all of those. Do the math.

And you're right on in saying that OS X Server is so much more intuitive in it's design that 2k3. I had taken several classes in 2k3, but had never touched OS X Server when I first installed it on a test machine. I was absolutly amazed at how much EASIER it was to setup and maintain that 2003. There's no comparison. Microsoft just loves to spread shit all over the system so that you have to know it backward and forward to get anything done and wind up opening five windows/applications. Apple put 90% of everything within two applications. Server Admin for services, Workgroup Manager for Open Directory Management. Then there are a few more little apps for managing other miscellaneous things. If only Microsoft could design something that simple, but they've proven time and time again that they're utterly incapable of it.

  14. Awesome! on Apple TV Already Being Hacked · · Score: 4, Interesting

When I saw the AppleTV announced, my reaction was lukewarm, mostly due to limited format support. Apple can get away with it on iPods, because you don't generally put every piece of video you have on your iPod. Conversion isn't as much of a hassle as a result. With the AppleTV, you might as well stream every piece of video to your TV, and format support kills that. I'd rather get Core Duo Mac Mini that has more available options (like 1080p playback), add some adapters, and hook that up instead. Now that the AppleTV can support more formats, I must admit that it's looking like a more attractive option, although I'd still probably cough up the extra for a Mini.

If it ever went to court, Cicso would probably lose their trademark. For one, other products were released by other companies that used the name iPhone. Cicso did absolutely nothing. That's a big hit in a trademark lawsuit. If you don't defend it, you lose it. Second, Cicso filed the trademark renewal at almost literally the last minute, and the photo they used was an existing product with a sticker that said "iPhone" slapped on the outside of the clear plastic wrapping. So it stands that they did not have a product named "iPhone" when they renewed their trademark, which means that their renewal was more than likely invalid. If you don't use it, you lose it. Hopefully both companies sort things out, but I think if it ever came to a nasty trademark suit, Apple would wind up with the trademark.
