Well, I know it was a Mac game first, but the final version as we know it was released on the Xbox first, and the FPS gameplay we saw was drastically different from the original Mac vision.
Halo PC is not the way people were meant to play Halo. It was released 3 years later with neglible changes. It was born on the console, and thats where the gameplay really belongs. If you start to compare it to PC games, you're just gonna complicate it and get a skewed vision of the whole thing.
HL and UT were shitty games on PS2, and Halo was a shitty game on PC. It's not often that a game makes a good trip cross platforms, and it definitely wasn't the case with Halo.
It's just like a preorder. Have you ever preordered something before? You will get the game eventually, but the advantage of paying early is you get to play CS:S. Or, you could wait for the full game and just twiddle your thumbs.
HL2 and HL1: Source are not finished yet, and Valve must wait until Vivendi declares them gold. However, CS:S is basically finished, because it's been in beta so long and all it needs are the new maps. When HL2 is released in stores, HL2 and HL1: Source will be unlocked on Steam.
Also, DoD:S isn't done yet, and probably won't be done this year, but you will get it in the future when it comes out. Valve kept it out of the store boxes because they needed to give an extra incentive so more people will buy from Steam, bypassing the publisher and getting Valve more money. Also, the game isn't finished so it's not possible to put DoD:S in the box.

A search for 'America' yields a 52.64 KB result page in A9, while that same search yields a 4.36KB page in Google. Size isn't necessarily a problem for me, but I think A9 is trying to pack too much stuff into what should be a simple process. If I want to find movies, I'll go to IMDB, if I want to find books I'll go to Amazon. A9 complicates it rather than simplifying things.
There is no CD key if you buy the game through Steam. The game is simply attached to your account after you buy it with your credit card. There are no CD keys for people to guess with and "steal" your Steam copy (unless they crack your username and password.)
Box version, however, will have a CD key, but the first time it is used, it is attached to your Steam account, and nobody can use it with any other account.
Winamp 5 is superior to any other version, just make sure you go into the plugins menu and uninstall all unnecessary plugins (visualizations, midi decoder, etc.) I use MMD3 modern skin, but Winamp only uses 6MB of RAM because I got rid of all the useless bloat.
