    It also depends on the legal framework in the particular jurisdiction. There are certain position that are specified in various laws. You have to put a name on government forms for each one. Just filling in "Not Applicable" won't do. Or you won't get your business license. Or be held in violation of some IRS regulation.

    Let people download an app and make up their own minds about FM. This whole 'the marketplace has decided' bullshit is often just cover for 'We have our reasons. Go away and stop bothering us.'

    There are some subtle differences between broadcast FM and streaming content revenue models and middlemen. I wouldn't be surprised if the streaming proponents just want to steer the ad bucks their way. Follow the money.

  7. What is really interesting about the Tube Alloys program (joint UK, Canadian) is the price estimates for the various proposed facilities compared to what the Manhattan Project cost the USA. We (in the States) got butt-raped by the private industry involved in construction. Often by costs a few orders of magnitude greater than British R&D costs.

    ... that they can't use imsi catchers? Or that they'll need a warrant to make use of the data in court? Because if it's the latter, cops will just go on using them. And then do a little parallel construction to explain just how they managed to show up at the right time and place.

    Why does the MMU need to give user space apps access to its cache? Isn't the O/S, firmware and microcode supposed to provide a logical view of hardware like memory to prevent this sort of abuse?

    Umm, no. They tried this in Washington State* and the whole 'too drunk to make proper judgements' defense was thrown out. If you drink, you'd better figure out how you are getting home before the first one.

    *Oddly enough, it was actually a state supreme court justice that got caught driving drunk and tried the defense.

    I hope her dad is going to sue the bosses estate. Because this whole thing is wrong on several levels. Two drunks, neither capable of operating any car, let alone a high performance model. So put the inexperienced driver behind the wheel. And what's the boss doing getting his employees drunk in the first place? That company is another deep pocket.

    ... traveling overseas carrying sensitive information in the first place? Assuming he was authorized, there are procedures in place for this to avoid exactly this sort of misunderstanding. And they don't involve being the next person in a customs line at the border.
