Straight electric resistance heating can be considered 100% efficient.

But that electricity has to be generated someplace. And even if a combined cycle thermal plant is 97% efficient (to match a modern gas furnace), you have to move that power some distance, incurring losses.

  7. Who is responsible? on Seattle Finds Facebook in Violation of City Campaign Finance Law (reuters.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

For disclosing the financing behind a political ad? If I buy TV time or space on a billboard for a political ad, it's up to me to place some identifying information within the ad. The media owners may have no idea who is behind the advertisement. Because more often than not, the space in the media is purchased through an ad agency or other intermediary.

Now, if Seattle determines that some ad isn't within compliance of an election law, they can serve Facebook with a warrant to find out who pays for that account. But Facebook has no way of determining in advance to what use I am putting my pages. I might be using it to promote my favorite pizza place or microbrewery. It's not up to Facebook to track that in advance. They may not even have the expertise to evaluate ads for political content.

It would take years to build out sufficient prison capacity

Gov. Schwarzenegger declared overcrowding an emergency in 2006. The state did nothing. There are numerous unused military facilities that they could have put to use as minimum security prisons. Nope. Wouldn't do that either. The state had more than a decade to permanently solve the population problem. And they did nothing.

Time to put that shit hole state under martial law.

  13. We figure they were heads-down in the computer when they should have been doing management

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Some managers are better kept at arms length from the daily workings of the project. Spoon-feeding them status reports through PowerPoint keeps them out of the workers' hair.

Back when I worked at Boeing, we had a manager who was absolutely mesmerized by presentations with multiple fonts and colors. We just had to budget for a couple of interns to generate artsy pitch charts to keep him busy.

  14. Uber started out as a ride sharing company. A way for people who were already on the road to give another person a lift. But the Uber drivers preferred to be cab company employees. With guaranteed hours, benefits, collective bargaining, etc.

So Uber just says, "Screw it. We're a cab company now. And we are out to maximize our revenue and eliminate competition. Just be thankful that this doesn't involve the competition floating in the East River."
