    A wireless power cord.

I mean, we've got wireless everything already, and all those radio waves and GHz signals are basically a form of energy streaming through the air, so why couldn't we do it with electricity?

Think of the bliss a wireless power bar would bring.

    Patent pending.

  3. What about the March 31st pre-orders? on Infinium Finds Itself In, Out Of Court Again · · Score: 4, Interesting

If you look on www.phantom.net they say that their online store will be open on the 31st of March, but there's not a single spot on the site where you can actually click through to an order page. C'mon, even my grandparents could spot this company's worth and they don't have two clues about this industry. If you're dumb enough to give these guys money, consider that your fine for being stupid.

  4. Japanese? Weird?? on CESA Boss Talks Japanese Gaming Problems · · Score: 1

He also addresses the perception that many Japanese PC titles are adult-oriented: "They stand out. They do not have a large market, but they catch your eyes. If you look at that, you may think, 'Boy, these Japanese are very strange.' It is not the case."

Now, I'm just about as tolerant as I can be about cultural differences, and I don't look down at another culture's adult entertainment any more than I would judge them by the clothes they wear.

But there is a reason why there isn't an english translation for hentai.

  5. Forget functionality on Nintendo's GCNext Direction Outlined By Iwata · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's all about the games. Always has been. The reason people buy Nintendo is because of the marios, the metroids, and the zeldas, those kickass exclusive games you just can't get anywhere else. The reason people buy xboxes and playstations is so they can play those highly-advertised gtas and final fantasies after watching a dvd. Think about it. Nintendo's busy delivering the quality while sony and ms are giving us the quantity.

And screw backwards compatibility. I don't care at all about it. It works with the GBA because it already owns something like 80% of the handheld market, but who actually still plays psx games on their ps2? Whoever played sega games on their genesis? Or sega cd or 32x for that matter? I don't want my cool new console to be crippled just because it has to dumb itself down for 5 year old games.

  6. Think of the older stuff on 2003 CD Sales Officially Down 7.6 Percent · · Score: 1

I hope you're not boycotting buying ANY music you're listening to because of your 1-hit wonder rule. There's a huge amount of stuff out there, and most of it hasn't been made in the past year. In other words, if you can't find any modern music you like, then work your way back through the years. Surely there are bands you like that you don't have every album for, so why not go deeper instead of skimming the surface? Just because a cd isn't on the "new release" rack doesn't mean it's no good anymore.

It's great that people aren't buying music they don't like, but if they aren't buying anything how will the riaa's business model be able to improve at all?

  7. What about dialogue? on John Woo & Metroid the Movie? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Absolutely NONE of the metroid games have any speaking characters at all, the closest there is are those "pirate data terminals" in prime. Who is Samus gonna talk to for 2 hours? Is she gonna keep a hunter's log or something like that? She clearly doesn't operate under any kind of military or any other organization so arguing with her superiors won't work. The chozo are all long dead, so that's out unless they spend a huge amount of time showing her training. Space pirates could talk I guess, they obviously have language but who wants to hear them do anything but snarl?

As much as I'd love to see Samus on the big screen, I don't think there's enough material to flesh out into an entire movie that will keep casual viewers interested while staying close enough to the original concept to keep the fans happy. It would definitely make for some fantastic action sequences but as a movie? I can't see it.

  11. The dominion wars on Best Sci-Fi Space Battles? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Towards the end of DS9's run, they had a few really good large scale battles that would really keep you on edge. It just gives you such a sense of the scale of a conflict like that when you see ship after ship get blown apart, and you start thinking "they MUST be running low by now" and all of a sudden another wave shows up from each side. Not to mention the suspense and the politics they showed before and between battles. Star Trek really is a very politically motivated show when you think about it. The bajorans as the jews, cardassians as the germans, klingons as the russians, romulans would be the chinese I think...the stories are definitely inspired by real world events and they can portray them with such candor because of the sheild of a fantasy world they can hide behind.

As for a small scale battle, I hate to make another trek reference but the nebula battle in nemesis was a beautiful portrayal of tactics and experience vs power and the overconfidence that came with it.

  12. I'm with you all the way on Vietnam - A Belated Gaming Invasion? · · Score: 1

Believe you me, there will never be a shortage of wars to make games about. I can't wait until developers stop worrying about what fads are "in" and actually do some of their own research about a war instead of just playing their competitor's games. I'm to the point now where another WWII game comes out and I just say, "blah, WWII again?" Vietnam is the same way. The only vietnam game I've even played was vietcong and I'm keeping it that way.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd much rather play a well thought out interpretation of an obscure conflict than bomb my way through yet another bunch of krauts. A truly good developer could make a great game out of any story you throw at them instead of just giving us more shiny surfaces.

In short, there's a finite amount of ass that can be kicked by any given concept, and each new chapter only dilutes the entire book, so to speak.

  13. I'd love to see 'em even try to sue me on Music Industry Loses In Canadian Downloading Case · · Score: 2, Interesting

First of all, I'm downloading my albums through bittorrent, so it's not like I'm hosting thousands of files on kazaa on a permanent basis so they can't bust me for being a major supplier which seems to be the people they're targeting. Second, if they took one look in my house they'd see an enourmous pile of store-bought cds, the majority of which have been bought in the past 5 years and after listening to my downloaded copy. If they check my computer, they would find that for every complete discography of a band I really like (and for many of these own the actual cds already and am working on the rest) they might find 1 lone album from a band I wanted to "try out". I'm your fucking customer and I'm using my downloads to make critical music purchases, so don't try and make me stop or else I will!

  14. That's just hypocrisy on Watch Your Neighbors Political Contribution · · Score: 1

I'm talking about the CHOICE that EVERYONE makes when they speak up about the things that are important to them. I didn't choose to be a white male heterosexual any more than you chose to be a gay black woman, but if you're not making yourself heard about your choice of beliefs because you're worried people will treat you differently, then that's just plain cowardice and that's why you're still being treated like you're a minority.

When you hold views that are different from ANYONE'S they will look at you differently. If an atheist and a christian got into a debate about the validity of religion, do you really think they will look at each other the same as before, regardless of wether or not they're straight white men? Your political beliefs simply can't be none of my business because your political contributions, be they voting, funding, or speaking, affects my business.

  15. Not everything should be private on Watch Your Neighbors Political Contribution · · Score: 4, Insightful

Just because something CAN be private, doesn't mean it should be, or that you should should get uptight about someone offering it to the public or individuals. I don't see what the problem is with making this kind of information public. It's definitely wrong to discriminate against someone based on this information, but wanting it to be unavailable sounds like curing a disease by killing the patient.

The way I see it, if you're making donations or otherwise supporting your political party or viewpoints, you shouldn't be afraid to stand up tall and say it loud and proud. What exactly would you be supporting that you don't want other people to know about? If you don't want other people to know where you stand on certain issues, political or not, maybe you should think about why you're supporting those issues or groups in the first place. If you're hiding any of your beliefs or opinions because you're worried about offending or alienating someone, then you just simply don't believe in them strongly enough to justify raising a fuss when those beliefs or opinions are trampled on. In other words, I think people should speak up BEFORE their silence creates the problem.

  18. Diablo 2 did this on Epic Cracking Down On UT2K4 Cheaters Already · · Score: 5, Interesting

Blizzard set up 2 sets of "realms", an open realm and a closed realm. The closed realms kept the player's savegames on the server and while you were playing, all your character's interactions went through the server instead of straight to another player, while the open realms allowed you to play online or offline and kept your saved characters on your own local machine. Open realms also worked by the same system as fps's do, ie one player hosts the game, other players's boxes connected to it and none of the gamedata is sent to a secure server. It was a great idea and worked for a while, but cheats still crept into the closed realms from time to time. Of course, they were often patched quickly and the offending players banned, but that was little deterrent for others to try to cheat as well.

The way I see it, anti-cheating measures work the same as bug spray on a camping trip. You can apply it as often as you like, but mosquitoes are everywhere and at some point you've gotta suck it up and realize that soaking yourself in it from head to toe won't keep you from being bitten.

I don't know what the system's like in the US, and I'm not saying our ancestors (key word there) didn't do some terrible things to them, but in Canada the natives want nothing else but to reap the benefits of our hard work while they hunt endangered species with no regard for our environmental laws. They get free power, free housing, free money in addition to not paying taxes on the money they earn with and like the rest of us (assuming you can actually find one of the few that work for their living), free vehicles so long as they can prove they're using them to uphold their "traditional" way of life (no joke here). The list goes on much further than that, and it's absolutely ridiculous. They may have been a noble people once, but at this point most of them are nothing but spoiled beggars. If you want to live in the modern world then go to school and earn your keep, if not then go back your wigwams and wear your bearskins with pride. Believe me, there's no shortage of open wilderness here in Canada so it's not like they don't have the option. There's no reason we should still be paying penance for the actions of our ancestors. If my father went out and killed someone, I wouldn't get in any trouble for it, so why do natives still deserve the support we give them, and why do we still feel obligated to give it to them?

I know it might sound like a small number for television viewership, but think of how many hardcore fans there are who can't afford or just don't have access to satellite or digital cable, assuming they're even all being broadcast at all. There's what, 164 games in a season, and 30-something teams? That's a LOT of games to saturate the sports networks.
