  1. Re:It *is* a hardware company on Apple to Lock OSXi to Apple Hardware · · Score: 1

i suppose my point is that apple will have to choose to either embrace Mac OS X running on other hardware or fight against the crackers (and the public that wants it). one of those choices seems a lot more reasonable to me than the other.

  2. Re:Not will use, but *might* use on Apple to Lock OSXi to Apple Hardware · · Score: 2, Insightful
there's just no end to the "apple is a hardware company" posts in the last week.

but i disagree with you. *nothing* is going to create a situation where "there'll be no os x." There are far too many people who are firmly entrenched into Mac OS X.. your comment is absurd. Even if Cupertino fell into the Pacific, the Apple community would keep OS X going.

I believe Apple will grow substantially by opening Mac OS X to commodity hardware. how much revenue will apple honestly bring in on hardware in the long-term? there is a small, one-time margin on hardware sales. they then make money continuously by selling upgrades to their operating system and to their other software assets.

IMHO Apple will foster long-term growth by embracing the larger installed hardware base of the Intel platform. My prediction, however, is that it will begin as a closed system, branching quickly into licensed partners... eg a Gateway or HP or SGI (who knows?) box that is Mac OS X Certified. But success in this area (which I believe is a given) will dictate that Apple open themselves up to the wider clone market, the Computer Shopper types.

I suppose we'll all just have to wait and see how long Apple sticks to being a "hardware company". :)

this is huge for linux, it is going to put Linux into the hands of loads of people who previously never would have considered using it. but my question is, how will Sony support this? If it's a full-featured Linux installation, who's going to support Joe Frat-Boy with his Gamecocks hat when he has a dependency problem?

ok i realize dependency problems are SO 1999, but regardless, I've worked with Linux quite a lot and have grown dependent on the community aspects of it for support, etc. This huge roll-out of Linux should be interesting to watch.

How long until somebody compiles SNES9X and other emulators to their PS3 Linux, thereby erasing the cool original feature Nintendo had going for Revolution?

BitTorrent really could have a future as a way to distribute reruns...

for example, in a show like 24 or LOST, where the episodes build on from one another, you're out of luck if you happened to have ANYTHING come up in your real life during one of the episodes and you didn't happen to tape/tivo it.

you can either miss that episode completely and not understand when characters reference those events in future episodes, or just stop watching the show entirely. As for me, with LOST, after missing an episode i felt like i'd have to catch up, and bit torrent is pretty much my ONLY option, otherwise the series is dead to me until it's out on DVD.

making some cheap, online distribution model for previously shown TV episodes would be an awesome move. i can see a future in some sort of, i dunno, ABC archive, where you can pay a buck or 2 and get access to an episode of a show, maybe as quickly as the day after it aired. With an International business model, I think it could be tremendously successful (albiet not for, say SkyTV or other non-american channels that broadcast a lot of American programming months or years after it comes out in the states).

but it's a pipe dream to think it will come without DRM and/or without commercials hardcoded in.

just because your's is functioning fine doesn't mean that Sony has their quality under control. If they were meeting the standard Six Sigma measures, this point would be moot. However, it is not.

Is it time for Square-Enix to give up on Final Fantasy?

the answer is a resounding no. However, they need to go back to what made it so special in the past. That is, back off of the convoluted plot, the rediculous looking and uninteresting characters, and the complicated and boring skills systems. Instead, bring back the spirit of adventure. Those that have played it will remember the magic of getting to finally pilot the air ship in FFIV, where you could FINALLY go over mountains and such, and visit those remote places in the overworld. It was the gameplay, the original and loveable characters (even characters we may idolize to some extent... it'd be nice to be as cool as Locke) that makes FFIV and FFVI the best in the series for so many of us.

SquareEnix needs to take a step back and return to its roots. FFIX was a step in the right direction, if you ask me. FFX was a supreme dissapointment, and FFXII looks to be much of the same. A gorgeous soundtrack will only take you so far.
