So it'll take 5 years to remove the dependance on a GUI eh? Good to see they're taking a page out of *nix that sometimes a GUI is not a good idea... I'm assuming you can still do everything via the GUI if you wanted, if not I wonder if this will remove the "Windows is cheap to support because even a monkey can hit ok" mentality (not saying I agree or disagree with it) I wonder if eventually they'll ship a GUI-free server edition and go full circle? Interesting
as long as someone CAN code a game on the PC, people WILL play games on the PC. Heck the original IBM PC was never intended as a gaming platform anyways, but people wrote games because there was an interest. Has the interest waned? Possibly, it's also quite possible that interest started waning when the big game developers stopped caring about the PC, thereby creating a self fullfilling prophecy.
Sure PC Gaming may bottom out more, but eventually people will be back. And the whole price difference argument is moronic... if that was the case pc gaming would have died out in the 80s when you could buy a Nintendo for the fraction of an 8086 (or whatever was the l33tness of the time)
Articles like this makes me wonder if people have heard the term "boom and bust cycle"
Free? I'll wait and see I can't imagine Nintendo would turn down this goldmine opportunity. As long as it's cheaper then what the Nintendo classics for the GBA are (I think in Canada it's around $30 ea) this seems like a no brainer to me, even if most games do cost a bit. I'll get one (or maybe both) of the PS3 and X360 sometime, but the Revolution? That's a definite yes.
But I'm always a bit concerned when they say they're going to 3D... 3D can be really good, IF ITS DONE WELL. Case and point is Lords of the Realm II vs III. I prefer the second one, even with all it's problems, over III because it has, imho, a really bad 3d engine interface. For some things 2D does, in fact, work BETTER (I prefer SMB3 vs Super Mario 64 or Sunshine, but I digress)
The rest sounds really cool, and I trust they won't screw over a beloved franchise like Civ... but... I'll reserve judgement when it's released. If I have to constantly change the camera because the Pyramids are blocking me from seeing the invading army all the time I'll be pissed:P
I currently own an PS2, XBox, and Gamecube. I bought the PS2 first for FF, then the Cube for the nintendo games (and it was cheap) and finally the XBox because I got a good deal on it. After reading all of the stats the only console I'm definitly going to buy is the Revolution. NES/SNES/N64 Library? Where do I sign up?!?! I know I'll get a PS3 or X360 (or both) but I'm waiting to hear what games are coming out for which. The Revolution, on the other hand, is going to have a huge library of classics I grew up on, so that one I'll preorder. Good move Nintendo I say.
What I think is the most exciting feature of this is the ability to use it as a mobile hard drive (albeit a small one) but also have the ability to view the files i upload to it away from a computer. I've used mobile drives several times and the ability to view / change / delete the files on it away from a computer is pretty tempting.
I use a Palm Treo 600 ("Smartphone") however, so I'll wait if (when?) they release a Treo with a built in hard drive.
When I was younger I was seriously hooked on a game called Wonderboy... even got my parents to buy me a Sega Master System. Anyways I was on one ice level, and I could'nt make it past. Spent like a week trying to make this one jump then FINALLY I made it... I was sooo happy I had to tell someone so I went to hit the pause button..
Anyone that may have owned one of these systems may remember that the PAUSE button is right beside the RESET button. Guess which one I pushed in my rush of happiness. I cried:-(
I agree... I mean if this was mmo.slashdot.org or something then fine, but we're not showing patches for SWG, FFXI, EQ2 (heck when was the last/. story on EQ2 anyways?) or single player games either.
Are you running the "Optimized view?" try resetting it so it doesn't try and fit it to the screen.. just a thought I haven't tried this on my Treo yet either, but damn yeah it's about time. Now if only Rogers in Canada would lift the 3mb limit / prices so I don't have to panic when i see the counter rise for traffic.
Having a sudden flashback to UO's repeatedly proclaimed death several years back...
I think the author of this article is forgetting a very important point... both Planetside and CoH are very unique games, PS being a FPS, with CoH breaking away from the swords n' sorcery style gameplay. As such these games are going to fill a niche. I don't play WoW, I did then returned to FFXI, but I can't see this game nosediving like the other two he mentions (a slight drop yes, but not a quarter or half of current subscription levels) Time will tell...
Personally I did'nt notice a dip, but being on the new Remora server the population fluctuated quite wildly for awhile... seems to have stabalized to me around the 2700-3000 mark when I'm on. I'd expect FFXI (and most other previous-gen mmo's) to have taken a hit with WoW and EQ2, but I don't think it's in danger... hell UO is still kickin around
The stumbling block for me is the fact that up in Canada, via Rogers, I have to pay something like $25 a month for 3 megabytes of network traffic a month on my Treo 600. I have to count every bit that comes and goes on my phone for not getting charged extra fees, reminds me back of the early days of the internet. Does anyone know of a Canadian GRPS provider that has a flat fee for unlimited usage? I'd love to be able to have my email be pushed to my phone, or listen to Shoutcast servers
Unless people don't want Linux getting out to the masses, this can't be anything but good... sure it's not open source, free source code, but honestly some commercial apps for linux probably never will be... the more companies that are interested in linux the happier i am.
We use Blackberries at work (well.. management does i just drool at em) they're VERY nice.. if your in an enterprise environment or run their server. Personally I use a Palm Treo 600... it doesn't have the capabilities offered by RIM's server, but overall I find it to be a MUCH better product.
heh... you do realize that most countries "send tax dollars out of country with a software contract award."? Canadian goverment (or at least the part ofit I work in) uses MS Office... a US based company.
Well... I'll be the first to admit it.. I've played GTA. Heck, I've even thrown fireballs at little turtles. I'm a menace to both man and nature. It's quite obvious that, at any minute, I will suddenly start shooting people. Best to lock me up and throw away the key. Sure I don't feel like killing anyone, can't really stand the sight of (real) blood, but that's going to change anyyyyyyyyyyyy minute now....
Awesome... so if I'm under 18 and commit a crime, I only have to own one of these games and say they corrupted my youth? wow, I can do anything I want now... yes I can see this bill limiting crime.
Ok I lied... I'm not done feeding your troll. I won't dispute your numbers as I don't have insider access to Blizzard. I find it hilarious that you call the "second most popular" mmo one of the worst MMORPGs ever created . If going purely with popularity, you better cancel your wow account and buy Lineage as it's obviously
WAYYYYYY better then WoW could ever be. In fact, I'm curious why you don't compare it to Lineage? Why exclude it? Again, why target FFXI?
Following what you say... Apple and the various *nixes (and eveyrone else) should pack up because Windows is teh best... (of course, your logic is flawed because your choosing to ignore the #1 mmo out there Lineage)
I've played UO, SWG, EQ, FFXI, and WoW. FFXI is far from one of the worst MMO's out there. I play with several people that after a month of WoW retunred to FFXI because it's too "fisher price."
oh well I'm sure the point of your rant is to get people like me to respond. With holes as big as yours are in the logic you can't be serious (i loved your FFXI was down for a week rant... it was a major ISP that caused it, everyone else was fine, you never responded to that). so you win.. you are teh l33t.
What I'd like to know... is why you feel so strongly about this, other then the obvious answer your trolling... you don't like the game? fine big whoop. Move on... I've played both FFXI and WoW, and stuck with FFXI. WoW's a good game, if you like it, play it. They both have their pro's and con's. I personally play games that are challenging because I like the challenge, if thats not your thing go play WoW.
I also find it interesting that WoW fanboys usually target FFXI as "omfg that game is teh sux!" I wonder if it's an inferiority complex? Anyway thats enough troll feeding for me.
Honestly I can't say I'm suprised... I haven't heard a lot of competitors say "wow look at that, thats much better then what I have go buy their product"
With that said I actually do enjoy playing DOA.. no it's not at the same calibur as most others, but I find it's difficulty to be just right for me... it's not as complex as the others and since i generally suck but enjoy fighting games it's perfect.
Yes I enjoy the graphics and all the perks (haha) but the fact I can turn it on for 5 minutes and pwn without remembering intricte moves is all i need.
Am I the only one that misread this as SLI'ng printers? However it does make me wonder if this technology would we be useful for anything else such as sound cards (I know Network adapters are able to do something like this, granted it's a much older technology and not called SLI)
"Hey Honey you know how your always saying I should get more cultured and go to a sympohny orchestra? Well I just bought us two tickets! It's even foreign!"
First off let me say I'm an Intel user... I'm glad AMD exists, Intel needed a good kick in the butt, but for reasons I won't get into I'm still an Intel person.
With that said... I love the fact that AMD allows something like a dual core to be potentially used in existing hardware.... every cpu intel releases seemingly needs a new motherboard and possibly RAM, I really wish this is one thing they'd start doing. Kudo's AMD, keep up the good work.
Well if they build it right it would sell well... for example if Sony had enough forsight, they could have (and yes I am totally guessing here but it makes sense from what I do know) made the hard drive look like a memory card to the PS2, and allowed any game to make use of it... instead games had to be hard coded for it, but why invest the time for that feature if not many people have it to begin with?
Sony had a chance with the Hard drive that they probably did'nt take enough advantage of... possibly an over simplification of it but there's my 2 cents.
So it'll take 5 years to remove the dependance on a GUI eh? Good to see they're taking a page out of *nix that sometimes a GUI is not a good idea... Ok no more caffine for me
Explain? Easy:
"Hey Honey you know how your always saying I should get more cultured and go to a sympohny orchestra? Well I just bought us two tickets! It's even foreign!"
