It will probably have made some pretty great strides by then (I figure both GNOME and KDE will be fully useable for newbies by 2003 - and no, they aren't today), but it will take longer than that (if ever) to become the dominant desktop.

I've gone in the other direction; I've sold my tv and bought a tv card instead. After all, my desk chair is the most comfortable seat in my home and I spend a lot of time there anyway.

  12. Actually... on Affordable Home Backups for 10-100G Systems? · · Score: 3, Interesting

First, on a typical system, not all data is really worth backing up; the OS and all applications can be reinstalled in the event of a crash (for Linux, it might even be slightly beneficial, as you'll reinstall newer versions and get rid of various cruft you've forgotten you have). Some data has been saved just because it's convenient or simply less bother than having to actively remove it (for me, I tend to collect old logs, various mails I never will look at again and documentation that's several revisions old). A lot of mp3:s and movies may already be burned onto CD:s. That filled 40Gb drive may actually 'only' contain 4-5 Gb of data that actually needs to be backed up.

The data I actually need to back up I manage by having the important stuff an specified directories, then mirroring them over the net to my machine at work. By doing it incrementally, there is little time or bandwith wasted.

OK, I can't comment on the statistics. I suspect it's fairly accurate, though; it depends of course on the definition of 'disabled'.

Sometimes, people forget (I'm not accusing you of this) that making things easier for the disabled makes things easier for the rest of us as well. A wide elevator and access ramps are essential for someone in a whellchair, but are also a great help whenever you need to move something heavy. Kitchen utensils designed for arthritic use are usually also much easier to use for everybody. Websites designed to comply with standards for screenreaders are easier to navigate with a text browser as well. Consistent menu and button placements are a help both for visually impaired and for everyone else.

Having a steady, flicker-free screen (as well as a good keyboard) is a health matter as much as anything else; it's less tiring and gives less headaches. Fuel cells aren't really batteries at all in the normal sense. They aren't closed systems, so you don't recharge them, you refill with more methanol. This is a good thing, as it would only take a matter of a minute to get from empty to full, so no more need to have two sets of batteries lying around.
