    Pick some plane intersecting the sun. At some point, the planets will intersect this plane (a la Poincare slices). Voila (as he would say)! A 2D scale model that isn't even a projection, if only somewhat inaccurate.

    When I was in high school my handwriting was horrendous. After a few years of doing mathematics, it became a necessity to write very very clearly. Perhaps a little bit of an extreme solution, but it worked for me...

    Not only personal motivation and interest. When computers came to be popular years ago, much of it was still not polished enough to be intuitive to everyone. Operating systems have strived to become that intuitive, and by doing so have hidden all of the internal workings of the machine. It works by magic! I think something similar is happening to cars... Since all of the cars manufactured recently have a CPU that does a lot of the dirty work, they have become impossible to work on, so many people do not become as proficient with their cars as people have in the past.

    Actually, being very forgetful, I often leave my wallet in my pants when I take them off, and then end up washing it. What do I do if I'm in a hurry and have a wet wallet? I leave the wallet to dry itself, but I microwave the money so I don't pay for things with soggy bills. Am I the only one who does this? I've never had any problem with this exploding stuff, btw...

    My heatsink fell off once... I don't think the processor overheated, but what DID happen was that the falling heatsink took out a couple of capacitors on the way down... I thought that the motherboard turned itself off when the temperature got high, so I reattached the heatsink, tried to turn it on, and nothing happened. One of the stupidest things I ever did was hook a second power supply to the machine, thereby frying nearly everything connected to the motherboard. Bah.

    Seriously, I'm worried that the very smallest mishap will bring this crashing down. If this works, it'd be the greatest thing ever, but if it doesn't, what a spectacular failure. It'd be interesting to count how many power cords are tripped over in the process.

    What's amusing is that people are encouraged to bring laptops, and are then expected to play games that way...

    Each guitar has it's quirks. Depending on the intonation the "b" string on a guitar needs to be tuned manytimes slightly flat to allow chords to ring true.

    Looks like someone needs to check the action on their B string...

    Automatic tuners may look cool but will go the way of locking nuts. Remember those locking nuts and big ass whammy bars forced on us by Eddie VanHalen in the 80's?

    Locking nuts and big ass whammy bars are still important to some... Steve Vai's and Joe Satriani's signature guitars still have those. Sweeeeeeet...

    I once had QBasic for the Absolute Beginner, which was my first programming book, that seemed to be good for this kind of thing... IIRC, C for Dummies also was a good introduction for a nonprogrammer. I've never had a C++ book, so I can't recommend any.

    It'd be interesting to know the age distribution of Slashdot readers. For instance, Microsoft is much older than I am, I predate the linux kernel... I was, however, born in the same year that the term "copyleft" was coined.

    I've spent enough time waiting at gates to appreciate the utility of having wireless internet there. It's not that I need to get something out while at the gate, but that I have an hour or more (I like to get there early...) to get something productive done while I wait.

    At the ISP where I work, I can sit in the lobby and pick up about 3 other free wide open WiFi APs from the couch in the lobby.

    Imagine that... An ISP employee looking for internet access at work...
