Artists and craftsmen make unique items, and so do programmers (yes, even in Java). It is an inescapeable fact.
Idunno... A lot of the creativity is gone now that pointers are gone. I have to work a lot harder now to obfuscate my code...
The history of computer science is definitely covered in some of the lower-level courses, but I wonder how many are truly interested enough to remember...
I don't know if knowing the history is necessarily important. It seems to me what is more lacking in computer science majors I've seen is developed mathematical and logical skill. But then, computer science is only my minor, so I might tend to think that all computer scientists should be mathematicians:P
I hate to be one (of the many) to belittle your dream, but I have a friend who received a similar amount of money and started a savings account for retirement. He's a smart guy, and I hate him for it.:P
Trying to do those things in PDF means a slow and painful death
pdflatex -- Processes LaTeX source into a pdf file. Neither slow nor painful:)

I, personally, don't think a Linux user is behind the attacks
I think it's rather obvious that the author is a Linux user, or else he wouldn't care about SCO. What is important is that he's not representative of all Linux users.
First of all, every email I send is already paid for with the check that I sent to my cable company every month. I pay them to relay my messages to other people who have (probably) paid to have the ability to receive such messages.
It seems very pompous of Yahoo and Microsoft to suggest that the free and open protocols and agreements that have allowed free information exchange for decades. I would rather have another free and open SMTP replacement than have to pay to forward jokes and virus warnings to all my friends...
One can be certain that the newest round of Windows trojans would not affect this system...:P
If I were not confident in my ability to assemble a machine myself, I would gladly buy this system. By now we know what to do with unwanted CDs *coughAOLcough*, and choice, any way it comes, is a Good Thing.
Besides, I can get Windows through my university for very cheap:P
fdisk
Slackware
Debian
Mandrake
Surely you can think of others ;)
The slashdot community seems to be at a loss for words, if I'm among the first to post... But maybe that's because we're tired of talking about SCO :P
How fitting... This important work by Julia is all about recursion... :P

Actually, carrying a small Tux doll takes care of both of those... Chicks dig stuffed animals...
And it was 523% cheaper, took 45 days less time, and tasted like chocolate.
If the world were perfect, all screws would fit all holes and this site wouldn't be slashdotted...

If you're a bad guy and don't want to frustrate law enforcement, form a line to my right.
Send me $5, and you get a certificate, instructions, and a collectible "I am a sucker" badge that all your friends will be jealous of.
I'm forming my own Friendster-type service. I'll call mine Society. All you have to do to join is GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND GO TALK TO SOMEONE. :P
Maybe someone could try to get NYTimes to similarly recognize Slashdot referrals?
