How about relative stats.
If a test tells you with 99% accuracy that you have X.
But only 1 in 1,000,000 of population have X.
What is the actual likelyhood that you really do have X.
In fact, the test will incorrectly show 10,000 people out of every 1,000,000 as having X.
And 99 times out of 100 it will show the one Guy with X as having it.
If you test 1,000,000 people then of the 10,001 people who show up as having X, only 1 really has.
See if your doctor understands this before you accept his advice based on a test.

If 10% of us replied with total garbage to 10% of spam, it would make it a disaster for marketing.
Imagine if you run a shop and every single person that passes withing 10 miles drops in and asks a question and then leaves without buying anything.
Suddenly you can't find the people who want to spend money and bang, your business fails.
So next time that you get an email saying that the have found 10 ways to remortgage your house, reply, tell them you have an average 3 bed in an average address with an average income and let them waste their time replying.
Why not ask them to send some brochures by snail mail - that will cost them money.
Set up a ???mail account that you use only to reply to spam, and consider it a sport to see how many emails you can get a day.
Or just use gmail and let it filter the spam like I do 8-)

It was not directed wholy at Americans, there are many nations whose people flee their own self perpetuated problems and then try to set up the same set of problems all over again where ever they arrive.
Ever Seen British people looking for a full english breakfast on holidays in thailand ? - Try the local food, don't ask what it is, it doesn't kill the locals. Fish does not need batter.
Ever Seen Irish people looking for an Irish pub in any city in the world ? - Try the wine bars or the cafes, really. Hell take up a sport.
Ever Seen People from radical cultures arrive in "free" countries and want to have religious laws implemented ? - Some of us don't believe in your superstitions, why should we obey you're superstitious laws.
If you are going to mess up your own country, and then leave, what makes you think we want you to come to ours and mess it up to.

a) Wants to come here and change things to make here more like the place they just left.

I send them back Assignments and then Sit End of year exams.
I get to study when I feel like it. On the bus, in the waiting room at the hospital while I wait for them to scan my knee, cause I busted out on marathon training, at lunch time at work, you get the idea.
The university provides:
A sylabus,
Specific material,
Exam marking,
Assignment Marking,
An email / phone number of a tutor that I can contact to explain stuff.
I don't have:
Interaction with other students.
A set in stone time table (though assigments and exams have dates)
Lectures to skip.
If you can do a lecture once, very well, in a studio, why wates your time repeating yourself.
Let the students watch the DVD and come to you with questions.
Improve the DVD every so often based on previous questions.
Now, tell me why you care if they skip lectures and just get the DVD.

Don't get me wrong, I think that a cure for cancer is great, but it's not a panacea for all that ails mankind.
We (all of us) will live a lot longer when we (all of us) learn to curb our greed, and realise that more is not always better. When laws are fair and just, as well as leagally correct, and when we (all of us) stop living by taking advantage of others.
I presume that they already keep track of what I have bought and searched for, so let's skip that.

And, in case any one from Amazon bothers to read slashdot, I really don't think I've bought much if anything suggested by their web site. I go to Amazon and use the search function. REALLY I do know what I am looking for right now more than some half baked rule based system.

You know I was sure he asked what was the Professional thing to do, rather than how to take advantage of the situation and then CYA just in case.
Personally my good name is worth WAY more than 2 weeks pay, and the Computer industry is way too small for that kind of Cr4p.
Currently I work with two people who I have previously worked with in two different companies.
One of them interviewed me for this job.
Care to guess how that interview would have gone if I'd pulled a stunt like that when I worked with him before ?
If you do damage before you resign, the CIO can blame you.
If you resign, and then do damage, then everyone wants to know why the CIO left you with access to the systems.
If they trust you, and leave you with access to the system, then kick someone else out on the day he/she resigns, then he/she will start moaning about implied defamation.
Solution: A Policy, applied equally and universally.
This is not unprofessional, this is not personal unless they have treated everyone else differently.
