Yes, it's a big, bulky CRT monitor. But let's see what we can do with this PC that we can't do with the minimac:
Type things
Move the mouse pointer around
Actually see what's happening on our screen
Hear sounds
Upgrade the memory without voiding the warranty or paying an Apple-authorized dealer's salary
Connect a microphone, or an audio line in (or both at once)
Connect it to our stereo with the line out
Add a DX9, 256MB PCI graphics card for under $100
Attach a USB printer, webcam, etc, etc to our USB ports without buying an additional USB hub. (Because the 2 USB ports on the minimac are taken up by the keyboard and mouse [not included])
Plug the flash memory from our digicam into the card reader, saving the expense and fuss of a USB digicam cable every time. Even with the xD cards from newer Fuji and Olympus cameras.
And so much more
And what are the advantages of the Mac? Well, first of all, it's not a fair comparison. Because to kit out our Mac with all the things we really do need (monitor, keyboard, mouse) we're already several hundred dollars more expensive. But let's go with it anyway.
We get a small, stylish computer. Well, that's great if all we care about is show. If you think it makes you look cool, well, I think it does too-- among people who don't know shit.
It doesn't use much power Who actually cares about this? I mean, if you're so anal that you're counting the watts of your home PC, by all means, buy the mac.
It's quiet. Did I mention the HP comes with speakers?
It has OSX. Great. So it has an OS that you'll be expected to pay something like $100/yr. to keep up to date (if you average it out), and probably doesn't run the software you want to use.
Have you ever heard a Dell? No? Neither have I, because they use steel cases and are very clever about the way they route air through them. They're very quiet.
And I always love when the Mac fanboys have to resort to an argument which amounts to: "it looks cool." Yeah, that's a great reason to buy one _computer_ over another.
That one got them riled up. Good one. I would also add a reference to the time the Saudi religious police wouldn't let some schoolgirls flee their burning dormitory because they weren't wearing appropriate moslemwear. They let them all burn to death. Haha.
Information and content is a lot cheaper and more easily accessible than it was a few years ago. The RIAA still sells CDs for $10-$20, when a CD holds 700MB of music/data, tops. Meanwhile, a DVD, with 8GB of Video/Music/Data, is usually in the $20 range. Already, CDs seem overpriced.
They definitely are. Here's my favorite example. You can buy the soundtrack to the movie Chicago for $10. You can buy a DVD of the movie for $15. Of course the DVD includes all of the music that's on the CD. So in a sense you get the movie for $5. And some commentary tracks. And perhaps, somebody who knows more about this stuff can answer this, the sound on the DVD being Dolby digital 5.1 DTS etc. etc., the music on the DVD may actually be better quality than what's on the CD.
If I wanted to build a library of movies cheaply, I wouldn't bother downloading them. I'd get a good double layer DVD burner, a spindle of DVD+-R's, and a Netflix subscription.
I found the FAQ answer refreshing. How many times have you read a FAQ where the answer is "no" but they don't want to tell you "no" so they talk around it with a bunch of marketspeak gibberish-- "Product X uses certain libraries that are only available on certain platforms. After carefully considering the needs of our customers we determined blah blah blah..." Why make me read a paragraph when one word will do?
the last ten years' published scientific articles (articles from crank or non-peer-reviewed publications were not counted)
Big shocker there. A bunch of establishment greens review all the papers before publication, and what do you know, no paper disagreeing with their groupthink gets published.
article by a geologist which suggests that the Earth is in serious, imminent, unavoidable danger.
Let me guess, unless he gets extensive government funding right now, we're all doomed. Well, if it's unavoidable, I'm going to drive my Suburban down to Super Wal-Mart, buy me some of that Brazilian burned-down-rainforest beef, and have a humongous fucking Earth-Day-in-December barbecue, because global warming is unavoidable anyway.
Question for people: What covered half of North America 20,000 years ago? Given that, wouldn't you say the earth has gotten warmer over the past 20,000 years? What makes you think it ever stopped?
And then we're gonna take back the White House! Yeargh!
I watched him kill bugs for an hour in Everquest to build experience points (I made fun of him till he quit). I'm sorry but that's just a waste of time.
The only bigger waste of time is YOU SITTING THERE WATCHING SOMEBODY ELSE PLAY EVERQUEST.

It is now official - Voters in 7 states have confirmed: The Howard Dean campaign is dying
Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Howard Dean campaign when recent polls confirmed that Howard Dean
accounts for less than a fraction of 15 percent of all voters. Coming on the heels of the
latest New Hampshire primary which plainly states that the Howard Dean campaign has lost more vote share, this
news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. The Howard Dean campaign is collapsing in complete disarray,
as fittingly exemplified by
failing dead third in the recent Iowa caucus.
You don't need to be a Bill Schneider to predict the Howard Dean campaign's future. The
hand writing is on the wall: the Howard Dean campaign faces a bleak future.
In fact there won't be any future at all for the Howard Dean campaign because the Howard Dean campaign is dying. Things are
looking very bad for the Howard Dean campaign. As many of us are already aware, the Howard Dean campaign continues to lose vote
share. Angry, lunatic rants flow like a river. Howard Dean's voice is the most endangered of them all, having
lost 93% of its volume due to his apish shrieks. The sudden and unpleasant departure of long time campaign manager Joe Trippi only serves to underscore the point
more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: the Howard Dean campaign is dying.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
Polling leader Zogby states that 38% of democrats support John Kerry. How many supporters of John Edwards are there? Let's see. The number of John Kerry versus John Edwards posts on Usenet is roughly in
ratio of 19 to 16. Therefore about 32% of democrats support John Edwards. John Edwards posts on
Usenet are about twice the volume of Wesley Clark posts. Therefore about 16% of democrats support Wesley Clark. A recent primary put Joe Lieberman at about 11% of democrat voters. Therefore
about 1.00 - (.38 +.32 +.16 +.11) = 3% of democrats support Howard Dean. This is consistent with the number of
Howard Dean votes in Iowa.
Due to the troubles of Howard Dean, temper tantrums and so on,
Howard Dean's voters went to other candidates and were taken over by Dick Gephardt who sells another failed tax-and-spend philosophy. Now the Dick Gephardt campaign is also dead, its voters turned over to even less desirable candidates.
All major surveys show that the Howard Dean campaign has steadily declined in vote share. The Howard Dean campaign is very sick
and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If the Howard Dean campaign is to survive at all it will
be among far left peaceniks. The Howard Dean campaign continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could
save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, the Howard Dean campaign is dead.

Yeargh!
