Alexa has a quicker response time - PageRank is always zero for the first 6-12 months of a site's life. The two are also measuring completely different size indicators - link popularity vs. page views.
The SearchStatus plugin for Firefox displays the Alexa rank and the Google Pagerank for a page graphically side-by-side. I use these to get a quick idea about the popularity of a site. The two numbers are a lot more useful together. For example, PageRank Zero and a high Alexa Rank implies that the site is either brand new or trying to cheat the ranks.
I think it's much the same. It's a bit scary though. After searching for tourism info on a middle-east country, many of the Google Ads I see on Slashdot are written in Arabic.
They're running something like 20-40 dual-cpu windows boxes, one thread per cpu, scheduled using "tasklets" in Stackless Python. Additionally, they have a central database machine with an huge external hard drive enclosure. It doesn't contain hard drives though, it contains RAM.
Exactly. The problem is not the technology but the conversation, and we don't want to see cops with headphones and shotgun microphones trying to gather evidence about in-car conversations. Hence, legislation is not the answer.
Here in Iceland, hands-free equipment is now mandatory for drivers. It didn't seem to help at all. Later studies have showed that it's not the phone itself, but the conversation that distracts drivers. Holding the phone while talking, using an airpiece or just talking to someone that's sitting in the car with you all seems to cause the same amount of distraction for the driver.
Personally, I hate the supersized "politically correct" phrases a lot more than short synonyms, which a few wackos find offensive just because they're short. If you're a nigger, a nerd or a fag, you'd better get used to being that.
"Nigger" and "African-American person" are synonyms. Neither one is more "offensive" or "politically incorrect" than the other. One's just shorter.
Same here. I'm 22 years old, I've been messing with computers since I was 8, I do programming and administration 16 hours a day and I bought my first printer last week, a black/white laserjet to print invoices. It's the cheapest HP LaserJet model and I'm quite satisfied with it. Small footprint and extremely fast.
It's probably a joint operation. That's the usual way. Other countries are trying to enforce copyright law too and they feel like they're doing a better job if they work together.
Just mention your e-mail address in a slashdot comment and you'll be well on your way to getting all the world's information about penis enlargement =)
...the government is a key player in this market. They keep a database of peoples names, addresses, age, spouses, children, number of people in household and that kind of stuff and they sell queries to this database. If you want to target single mothers whose children are aged 4-8, just contact an authorized reseller and get a list of names with addresses. They don't allow targeting children under 6 months though.
I'm writing this on a Win98 box that hasn't been updated for years. It still works because it is not used for genereal web surfing (in win98's case, viewing=trusting) and it's behind NAT, so no incoming connections make it to this box.
I'm quite certain that removing the NAT (i.e. connecting directly to the internet) would render this machine pretty useless within a lot less than 12 minutes.
How the hell did a comment that makes little sense, adds nothing to the discussion AND uses the word 'fuck' four times get moderated to score 4: Insightful?
We seriously need to do something about this moderation thingy. This is just ridiculous.
Actually, law has nothing to do with this. Even though such law exists, it doesn't change anything. Any company will, by nature, do everything possible to increase shareholder value. That's what they're founded for.
I could not possibly stress this enough: Greed is Good! It is the most important motivator of them all. It powers our society.
An example that we should all understand: Without greed, computers would only exist in the universities where they were built.

Excuse my English, I'm not a native speaker.
"Any early thoughts, MSDN subscribers?"
Do those actually read Slashdot?
I suggest that we start calling MS "The Kindergarden" in future flamebait comments.

But what do I know, I'm just a newbie.

The colors are per-section, not per-post. So you don't like the purple color theme used for the games section. Neither do I.
That codename sounds more fitting for script-kiddie basement hacking than a law enforcement operation.
Even if you don't surf porn at work, Longhorn is to be used at home too, you know?

P.S. This is in Iceland.
...my birthday will be a slashdot story :D
...their amazing breakthrough technology seems to consist mainly of general pixel-pushing.

Canada is innocent. I blame it on the Boogie(TM).
The best rules are the ones that get broken every once in a while. We all needed a laugh. I know I did.
I, for one, blame it on the boogie.
