  5. Another Three Mile Island! on Nuclear Emergency Declared At 2 Plants In Japan · · Score: 1

I just heard a news reporter saying that this could be "another Three Mile Island". So I googled "Three Mile Island deaths". NRC says there were no deaths. Wiki says: "Based on these low emission figures, early scientific publications on the health effects of the fallout estimated one or two additional cancer deaths in the 10 mi (16 km) area around TMI.[38][unreliable source?] Disease rates in areas further than 10 miles from the plant were never examined.[38] Local activism in the 1980s, based on anecdotal reports of negative health effects, led to scientific studies being commissioned. A variety of studies have been unable to conclude that the accident had substantial health effects." Compared to deaths from drowning in the tsunami and the fumes from a burning oil refinery, another Three Mile Island is nothing.

It's the same reason people live on the sides of volcanoes. If it hasn't blown up for a while, someone has to move there.

Well my wife is not a nagging sort, but she won't listen to the GPS directions for sure. If it says "Turn right.", she says, "No, that's wrong." and goes her own way. Never gets lost though. "Entity X has done something wrong and here are the docs to prove it." No problems. However I just can't believe anyone actually read 300000 documents before casting them into the wind. That goes for Manning and Wikileaks. They seem to think that every secret is something evil that needs to be exposed, which is just not true. All tech companies have proprietary info that they keep under wraps etc. If all secrets are bad, then I want Assange's personal info: credit cards, phone numbers, bank accounts and physical location tracking every 5 minutes. I have had many CFL lamps fail in a matter of weeks or DAYS in some cases. I think many are just cheaply made; they go out, you hit them, they come on for a while. Color temperature is not always appropriate. Also you are not supposed to use them in an application where you flick them on, leave them on for a few seconds and then turn them off. Many applications are like this: closet light, basement light, fridge light. Some take a few minutes to reach full brightness although this improves with age. Also, use outdoors in frigid weather is a problem. I have changed most of my house lights to CFLs, but there are some decorative candelabra-base fixtures where you can't use them. Be aware that any electricity savings will necessarily be countered by rate increases so we're not doing this to save money, just electrons.
