In other words, could we repurpose the Diebold machines to print unambiguous paper ballots?

  4. Re:"Your do not call list" on Is the Do Not Call System Working? · · Score: 4, Informative

Having "call intercept" seems to help alot. Any call originating from a phone with a blocked caller id goes to a telco system that tells the caller the customer is not accepting caller id blocked calls and they can have their name phoned to the customer who can decide if they want the call. Many telemarketers block their caller id, and disconnect when they get the telco message. This plus the do not call list has eliminated most unwanted calls for me.

How about using the computer to mark the paper ballot? Use a touch screen computer, similar to the Diebold setup to allow the voter to vote. Then the machine prints out a human readable, but scanable ballot that the voter checks, and deposits in a ballot box. You can use the scanner to count votes, and humans can also count them if needed.

  9. Re:Money vs. Amateurs --- Guess who wins on FCC Approves BPL Despite Interference Concerns · · Score: 4, Insightful

    Two points:

First. we are getting BPL because the power companies are too cheap, or stupid to start installing power lines that contain fiber optic strands. These are non conductors so they can share space with the electric distribution system.

Second, this is a 2 way street. The BPL can cause interference in the HF spectrum, but it can also be interfered with by HF. And one way for hams to overcome interference and bad conditions is to up their power output. Its amaizing what can be done with only 5 watts under good conditions. But we can go as high as 1500 watts, which may be needed to get a signal through the BPL interference.

I was one of Verio's first DSL customers in the Washington, DC area. I first found out about this mess from Slashdot (Thank you Slashdot!) last Friday. Multiple calls to Verio resulted in long hold times, people who knew nothing, and finally Verio's official policy:
    • Go to dialup.
    • Go to a T1 (at 5 times the cost)
    • Go to hell! (or at least away)

I chose the last, and signed up with Speakeasy.net via Covad, and I have my fingers crossed. At the least, the folks at Speakeasy appear to have a clue, and they also seem to care.

BTW-- I think AT&T is bullshitting on this one. They could have immediately cut off all the non-paying ISPs, and kept the others up a few weeks while things get sorted out. I know it will be a very cold day hell, and pigs will have to become airborne, before I do ANY business with AT&T, and I was considering switching to them for celular phone service. Maybe its this additude that sent their stock down the toilet in the last couple of years.
