I love Linux but 60% of the programs I try to install without the benefit of apt-get fail for some cryptic reason or another. Sometimes I work it out after fiddling with it for a bit but to be honest I don't have time for that.
Thanks
I've been there twice, and returning in less than two weeks. Latvia is wonderful, and while "villainy and hackerdom" seems a bit tounge in cheek, there is this perception that it's some kind of shithole, probably because no one has heard of it...mostly the reason being that it was "co-opted" by the Soviet Union in a deal with the Nazis during WWII along with the other two Baltic states, Estonia and Lithuania.

I needed a Java guitar tuner that only played in IE and I was drinking some meade, holding a guitar, and then searched for some lyrics (bad combo). I had ActiveX scripting set to prompt but I had my hands full and a good buzz going so I hit Yes on a web page (it seemed a harmless lyrics page and I was buzzing good) and promptly recieved 7 trojans, my first virii ever. Long live the Fox.
Their GIS software Geomedia is very nice but needs some serious improvement if they want to compete with ESRI. However, they bend over backwards when trying to sell their products and their support is great. I just worry that with litigation as a major source of income for them, that it signals a potential death in the future, leaving any municipalities and other entities that invest in their platform out in the cold.
I don't NEED it. But they put some sort of "spatial" extensions in there, almost like an afterthought so I was amazed when I realized how limited it was. It also pushed me towards PostgreSQL which I was not aware of (I told you I was new; I come from planet ESRI) and I love it. Variety is the spice of life though, ask any Windows user...oh wait.
Nice reply, thanks. I have no idea why you are marked as Troll though; I found it informative. Mods?

As a GIS geek that wants a solution that costs less than $10,000,000.23, I'm hoping that MySQL improves their spatial extensions. Right now I play with PostgreSQL w/PostGIS until MySQL can implement more robust projections (how geography is "laid flat" on a map for those who don't know). From what I gather, and I admit being new to open-source GIS solutions, PostgreSQL w/PostGIS extensions stomps all over MySQL at the moment, but I think it would be in their interest to improve as they have a nice business model and GIS is taking off.
How about just removing teens from the road? At least in the States. What's the cons to this other than millions of pissed off teens and parents that are constantly being pestered to drive them somewhere?
The unreal engine has wonderful abilities to create machinima pieces (I'm sure other engines do as well). I created some cinematics for a video game using the engine and I can tell you that the hard part is not having the animations and sounds that you need. Setting up the scenes is not difficult (relatively) once you know the tools and if you have all this stuff handy, or have the time or a person to do quick animations: "Hey Jon, I need an animation of Captain Zer0 scratching his butt...".
Think about it; for a long "movie" you would need an incredible amount of motions, sounds and voices, even when you modularize them as much as possible (walking, looking left/right, radio chatter, ambient nature noises, blahblah).
The beauty is in the subtleties, a quick glance, a raised eyebrow, a certain cock to the shoulders when someone starts to talk about a subject that changes the characters mood, etc. Plus, since voice acting is just as important as how cool the models look, you pretty much need a cast, even though it's "ghosts in the machine":P
If it makes you feel better, I'm a lurker with good karma that moderates frequently. I am not a Linux zealot (just a fan) and try to moderate based on the context and content of a message, without bias. The only thing I hate is when someone says "I'll prbably get modded to hell for this..." because they always get the opposite. I still don't moderate them negatively for that alone.
And 'puke' means 'flower'! I kid not.

Plus a lightbulb for the damn things are $500 last time I checked, and hard to get.

Because we have an unnacountable media, a ghost in the machine that actually thinks for a good number of Americans. It totally freaks me out.
