  2. Re:In that case on Police Restrict Public Photography · · Score: 1

Just like in everything else, there are good and bad security guards. You seem like an intelligent person who is dedicated to doing your job. However, I *several* aquaintances who became security guards specifically so that they could have a legal reason to fight people. They joke about intimidating people who look suspicious and tell stories of using more force than necessary just for fun. One story that comes to mind is a "friend" who was chasing a guy who stole some groceries. The guy was running and slowed down slightly to go down some stairs. Instead of taking the opportunity to grab him, he slammed into the back of the guy, knocking him down the stairs. He told his manager that he couldn't stop fast enough to avoid running into the guy, although he told me that he just wanted to bust the guy up.

From what I have seen, generally the security guards who are hired to guard companies are peaceful, qualified individuals. However, the security guards hired to guard retail stores, concerts, and other places where they deal with the general public, are usually poorly trained and either a) looking for a job and don't care what it is, or b) applied because they want a reason to get physical with someone.

  4. There's one problem... on Make an RFID-proof wallet · · Score: 1

I used to have a work badge that used RFID. When I wanted to get in the doors, I would just turn around and swipe my ass near the scanner instead of taking the card out and swiping it. The card only had a range of a few feet, so I didn't consider it a privacy concern. In fact, I was more than happy to be conveniently broadcasting a radio frequency from my wallet.

  7. I don't see the big deal. on Digital DJs Unaware of Copyright Law · · Score: 1

AFAIK, DJs already need a license to publicly play CDs. I don't see why it should be any different for MP3s.

When I initially read the headline, I was thinking that this fee, to play digital music off a laptop, is charged on top of the normal licensing fees, which would cover the public playing of music in general. After reading the article, it doesn't seem like that's the case. Since all they seem to be doing is applying an existing fee to a new medium, I don't see the problem with it.

I agree that what he did amounts to a DDoS attack. That's what it was, but on a small scale. But I feel like, the punishment should fit the crime.

When someone steals $50000, they get charged with a felony and go to jail.
When someone steals $10, the get charged with a misdemeanor and get community service.
When someone steals $10 at high school, they get suspended.

When someone speeds 50mph over the speed limit, they get their license suspended.
When someone speeds 15mph over the speed limit, they get a $100 ticket.
When someone speeds in the high school parking lot, they get detention.

    Now lets try this...
When someone mounts a large-scale DDoS against a major portal, they get arrested and charged with a felony
When someone mounts a tiny DDoS against their high school, they get... arrested and charged with a felony?

//You get my point. He deserved a week suspension. Why can't schools handle things in-house anymore?

  19. i don't know about that... on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Unrelated to Typing? · · Score: 1

My job and my hobbies involve typing. There have been days where I spend 16 hours in front of a computer. Despite that, I have never had any symptoms of CTS brought on by my many hours in front of a keyboard. However, I do think that CTS is brought on by repetitive motion. When I was a kid, I spent countless hours playing the original Nintendo. I do remember, at one point, I started getting symptoms of CTS that were aggrivated by playing games. The longer I played, the worse the pain got. Sometimes it would last for several days. In the end, I had to give my wrists time to heal by playing old RPGs, which don't require as much intense use of the gamepad, for a few months. Because of this experience, I do believe that CTS can be brought on by some forms of repetitive motion. Even though I haven't had any problems with a keyboard personally, I certainly think its possible for keyboard use to bring on CTS in some people.

I have enjoyed photography for about 10 years, but over the last 3 years or so, businesses have become much more paranoid about cameras. Concert venues have cracked down, and many stores will kick you out for walking around with a camera, let alone taking pictures. Personally, I have always thought that (for the most part) you should be able to photograph anything that you are allowed to freely look at, but because of abuses, that isn't usually the case. It's sad really.
