A sheep is someone who follows the crowd without thinking about why. A sheep, in this case, would be someone who is on here bitching about Sony even though they barely know who Lik-Sang is. The sheep says, "Ya, Sony sucks! (even though I have no idea who Lik-Sang is, and I am definitely buying a PS3!)"

What you are referring to, is the tendency for consumers to be selfish and intolerant of any kind of discomfort or deprivation, whatsoever. The people exhibiting this trait say, "I hate those Sony bastards!@!#! (but I'm buying a PS3 anyway, because, seriously, how can you expect me to be without the newest next-gen system?!)"

My thoughts on it are this... Bitch all you want. It doesn't make you a sheep or anything. There's nothing wrong with bitching about something that you don't like. However, don't threaten action unless you, A) Know what you're angry about, and B) Actually plan on following through.

Or maybe less intelligence leads to poverty which leads to obesity. Then again, it could be the other way around...

Correlation does not equal causation. If I had to place a bet, I would say that the link between obesity and intelligence isn't biological like the article is inferring. There may be some kind of link there, but I bet that other factors are more influential.

  5. It depends... on Would You Hire a Former Black Hat? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The term "black hat" can cover a lot of ground. In my mind, there's a big difference between someone who got in trouble for snooping around the university's network for the sake of curiosity and someone who attached a keygen trojan to something and put it out on the internet for the purpose of stealing credit card numbers. There's also a difference between someone who DoS'ed their school's webpage in high school and someone who DoS'ed their employer's webpage when they were 25.

Here's another thing to think about too... The only reason to hire a black hat over someone else would be that you know they have some experience in hacking. However, there are many people who have the same experience and never did anything illegal. Basically, you're sacrificing a varying amount of ethics in exchange for a guaranteed amount of skill. Also, in many cases, the skill that a black hat has proven is directly proportional to the ethics that he has disproven. That is, if you know enough of a hacker's exploits to know that he is very skilled, you also know that he has broken the law a sufficient number of times to prove it to you.

In all, I would say that hiring a black hat would be case-by-case for me. Someone who is a black hat because of a harmless, but illegal, mistake may pique my interest because of his proven ability to learn independently. Someone who hacked a private network years ago, but has since proven to be a responsible person, may end up being a skilled employee and worth a second chance. But, to me, someone who committed repeated damaging, malicious acts online is no better than someone who committed repeated damaging, malicious acts in real like, and they would not be worth the risk, regardless of skill. //Would you hire a multiple-time burglar to protect your home? //Sometimes it's best to trust the home-security companies, regardless of whether or not their employees have ever broken into a house.

I disagree with you. First of all, this isn't just about the kidnapping. Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel, and Lebanon has done nothing to stop it. Let me make a comparison that may be closer to home.

Say that a Maxican drug cartel took up residence in a border town. For whatever reason, they got pissed at us, kidnapped two border partol officers, and started firing rockets at San Diego. And to top if off, the Mexican government turns a blind eye to it. What do you think the government would do? I sure as hell hope that we would send troops in there to stop it. Unless you want San Diego residents to live in a constant state of fear.

And about the civilian casualties... I do think that Israel needs to be more careful with their bombing. I don't think that they care about the lives of people in the countries around them, and I have a problem with that. However, it would help if Hezbollah didn't put their bases and meeting areas in residential areas. When an enemy base is located in the basement of an apartment building in a large residential area, there aren't many options that completely prevent civilian casualties.

This is why I have always felt that any extra powers given to the government to fight terrorism should be limited to prosecuting terrorism-related charges. For example, if the police would use powers given by the Patriot act to gather evidence on a large meth lab, all that evidence should be thrown out in the same way that it would be thrown out if they ran in without a warrant. I think it would give them the tools they need to keep an eye on in-country terrorists without screwing everything else up.

  21. terrorism, no. crime, yes? on Financial Responsibility == Terrorism? · · Score: 1

I don't see how this relates to terrorism at all, and my guess is that is doesn't relate. The government has always flagged large, unusual transactions of money. Mainly, they want to keep on the lookout for illegal income (drugs, etc,) and they also want to make sure that you paid taxes on any unexpected income. If someone who is has been collecting unemployment for the last 6 months suddenly pays off a $15000 debt or buys a new car with cash up front, chances are something illegal is going on. And if you happen to win $15000 on a trip to Vegas and you come home and put it in the bank, the government wants to make sure that you pay taxes on it.

Like I said, I doubt that this is really terrorism-related. It's more likely that this is another example of the government using their extended terrorism-fighting powers to fight regular crime instead.
