  1. Re:The Truth is Meaningless Anyway on UK Report Suggests Dangers In Cell Phone Use · · Score: 0

I would think the other way around. People are so enamoured with the convenience of their mobile phones they can't accept any bad news about them. If you've lived through tobacco, asbestos, DDT and the host of other poisonous products that business continued to sell while lying about serious side effects, you're probably a little cynical too. One thing that does deserve mention is that in the past it was common practise for scumcorps to fund and release a mountain of studies supporting their lies. This mountain was used to bury the legitimate independent studies that clearly showed how venomous these products were. That is what makes the "every scientist in the world doesn't agree it's bad so it must be good" argument so frustrating. Independent trials are the ONLY ones that can be trusted, unless you already know the result you want! ;)

I'm surprised noone sees this as the filesharing deterrent that it is. Each game has a unique identifier built into it. This unique identifier and your personal information are forwarded to the game maker when you purchase since none of us register software. If your unique version of the game ends up appearing on a fileshare network somewhere I guess the stormtroopers are sent in... or something like that! Just like the early versions of XP distributed to small system builders. I wonder if they expect you to take the personal information of the fellow you eventually onsell it to and report them to the all-seeing-eye for scrutiny as well?

  7. Re:generalization of morality on Interview with a Spampire · · Score: 0

Ethics and legality are certainly closely linked. Acts widely considered unethical will eventually become illegal (if politicians don't enjoy doing it). From what I've seen in the news over the last few years I think laws apply to citizens and companies, whereas ethics only apply to citizens.

In the Slashdot tradition I'll use an example:

BHP used to mine a mineral in Papua New Guinea at Ok Tedi. They used to allow a highly carcinogenic chemical used in their process to wash into the local river. That river was the drinking, washing and bathing water for thousands of natives downstream. The natives suffered horribly, the "interests of shareholders" and the legality of the process was used as the defense for the grossly unethical behaviour of BHP.

Now there were no specific laws in PNG to stop companies dumping into waterways so it was completely legal, yet only the most scummy lowlife executive or the lawyer who represents him would think it was remotely acceptable.

Ethics has nothing to do with religion. Ethics is about respect for your fellow man, his property and empathy for his feelings. Religion is about skimming enough cash from the surrounding community to support the local witchdoctor.

If anyone is having problems understanding ethics, try this.... Would I like to have Mr XYZ do to me, what I just did to him?

The mud reporters throw at democracies will often stick however because we don't cut out the tongues of reporters who criticise the government. Reporters in some middle-eastern countries don't have this luxury.

This war is far less vicious than any war before it. The only difference this time is that the armchair patriots are seeing their soldiers die every night on TV in damn near real time. If you don't have the stomach for it, change channels, which is your right as an armchair patriot. Whatever you do, don't force your govt to withdraw and abandon the 99% of good clean living Iraqis to anarchy and destruction.

I vote for a forced reformation of the Muslim church. Get them all the hell out of government worldwide like we did to the Catholics hundreds of years ago. Religious fruitloops are far too greedy, one-eyed and dishonest to act as political or military leaders. Geez, our politicians ego trip enough without thinking they've got a mandate from Jehova, Allah, Bhuti Bhuti or whichever fictitious cloud riding God they chant to.

We used to freeze icecream buckets of water in the freezer, smash them up and put them in a big metal tray. Take the tray into the room to be cooled and blow a little pedestal fan over it.
