  1. Second place works better than the winner on Slashdot CSS Redesign Winner Announced · · Score: 1

The new winning design does not work for me for a number of serious reasons.

    1. The font is illegibly small in comparison with my preferred browser settings - why ignore user preferences?
    2. The upper-left title graphic does not show up - what web site am I browsing again?
    3. The collapsible sections are jerky and annoyingly slow - this is not slick.
    4. Too cramped and not enough hierarchy in font sizes.

The second place design suffers from none of these flaws.

  5. Re:spect for authority necessary on Kutztown Students get Felony Charges · · Score: 2, Insightful

The REASON why respect for authority must be learned is because of PERSPECTIVE. There are times when those who are in authority have access to additional facts or mitigating circumstances that they simply do not have time to stop and explain to those who are under their authority.

Hypothetical case in point: If a policeman comes to your door, and tells you that the neighborhood must be evacuated immediately, you certainly have a right to know why. But you *must* comply with his directive first (under current laws)... and an explanation is not legally necessary. If there was a sitaution that put the entire neighborhood at risk, and time was of the essence to evacuate, causing a policeman to stop and explain his directives to everyone could cause someone else danger.

People in power should be given authority because they have already earned the respect of those who they will have authority over. People in power also must continue behave in a manner that remains worthy of respect under scrutiny.

In the case of your police example, if a police department consistently and fairly enforces the law, responds rationally and appropriately to threats, and quickly weeds out any corruption in its ranks, then, when a police officer shows up at my door and informs me that it is an emergency and I must evacuate I will trust and quickly comply with this command.

On the other hand, if a police department is seen as corrupt, unfair, inefficient, or irrational in its response to threats then, when a police officer shows up at my door I will have grounds to be suspicious, ask questions, and possibly not comply with what I am asked to do.

All respect is earned and can be lost.

  6. Information Overload on New York Times Exploring how to Charge for Content · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the problems that the NYT is facing is that we no longer live in an age where information is scarce.

Up until a few years ago, regular, in-depth, quality information about what was going on in the world was only available to the average person through a few sources - The daily newspaper was chief among these sources followed by radio, tv, and magazines.

Now, with internet access becoming ubiquitous people have more news/information than they can deal with. We are practically drowning in media. The question is: Why would we want to subscribe to another source of information?

There is a niche for the NYT. That niche is in limiting and filtering information. The paper needs to market itself as a relief from information overload.

Our nation is christian. We were founded on christian ideals. The only reason there is a separation of church and state is not to keep religion out of government, but to keep government out of the church.

Our government is not and should not be christian. The majority of americans may currently be of some christian denomination but, that does not negate the rights of the minority. Majority rule - minority rights.

Furthermore, most of the founding fathers were deists. Deist believe in god but reject christianity. See http://www.deism.org/foundingfathers.htm for a good overview of the religious views that the USA was founded on.

  8. Re:Sexual Suicide on Interest in CS as a Major Drops · · Score: 1

I wonder if it boils down to a difference in the power balance in Indian vs American marriages/genders.

One theory: In India, men's lives and careers come first and women sacrifice their own interests for their husband's. In contrast, in the United States both parties in a marriage are expected to make equal sacrifice. Naturally, this balance is difficult or impossible to establish. It is easy to see why men(and some women) would prefer the Indian system.

If you don't pay enough attention to your American wife (because you are busy with work or school), she will leave you or cheat on you.

I would also point out that the inverse is also true: If you don't pay enough attention to your American husband (because you are busy with work or school) he will leave or cheat on you. The good thing is that in America women(men) do not feel as much pressure to stick by a lousy spouse.

You also misunderstand me. Perhaps I was not clear or in my haste did not explain myself fully.

My main point was that this is a problem that can best be understood and solved on the micro rather than macro level. It boils down to individual behavior. The realities of the situation get lost in broad theories.

It is not at all proved that just because feminism is the "right thing" at the individual scale that it is the "right thing" at larger scales, and we may have problems if that turns out to be the case, problems which can not be wished away or simply dismissed as heresy. The Universe doesn't give a fuck if you find it offensive, it will simply wipe you out.

That is true, and once again I agree with you that many(most?) forms of feminism fail to look at the big picture and turn a blind eye to inherent truths of gender(ex: at this point, any way you look at it, any children brought into the world will have to be grown in a women's womb). I am not defending feminism.

My point is simply that on an individual level women, as a whole, are making choices, no matter how misguided, based on emotions and perceived offenses rather than what is good for "race or culture" or the survival of their genes and this translates to the macro level.

Quite frankly your comment betrays the deeply rooted sexism commonly found in computer/Engineering circles. You blame Gilder and Reaganomics for problems that can be found much closer to home embedded in the culture of high tech industry.

Hint: The policy makers are not the problem. You are the problem.

I agree with you that there are quite a few problems with feminism, however, your remarks on what is "good" for females are condescending at best. While you lament the fact that engineers and programers are not provided with wives who are forced into marriage through misogynistic traditions such as in India. You also neglect the fact that the number of women not interested in ever getting married or having children has been growing rapidly in the United States.

Also, You seem to have a binary view of the role women can play. They can either be sexy "corporate concubines" who conveniently disappear as they age to go make babies, or, they can be sexless and stay out of the tech industry entirely. You seem to not think that a woman can be sexy while possessing to skills/talent to hold onto a job through middle age as men will need to.

Yes it has pop3 access. No you don't have to sign up for anything as far as I know. I have used it before (preferances)... Very easy to do. Only crappy part I find is that the spam filter in yahoo is actually quite good, but if you elect to pop3, you bypass it and all the crap has to be filtered by your mail browser (though probabaly by design).

The yahoo spam filter is quite good. If you use pop3 with yahoo you have a few options:

    1. Forward to pop3 with no spam filtering.
    2. Forward to pop3 and add [Bulk Mail] to the subject line of mail that yahoo thinks is spam(usefull for creating filters on your own machine.)
    3. Do not forward the mail that yahoo thinks is bulk mail and retain on the server for a specific amount of time.

I use the third option with pop and never have any false positives. I also find that yahoo pop is much more reliable than my gmail account at this time. However, it is nice to have options.

The ExtraPrefs include a highly effective CSS based ad-blocking system, as well as features such as the ability to customize search engines, spoof your browser type, image control, window reuse etc.
