If you consider that he just wanted to be like Bill Gates and he achieved that by being a cunning and ruthless manipulator. Only difference is he is going to go to jail.
Cheers mate. Just an idea I had. Like I said - I didn't really have a clue and assumed that if it was a valid concept that SE companies would have come up with it eons ago. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I appreciate it. No offence taken;)
>This is all a political stunt with no thought behind it.
What a ridiculous comment to make!
So what you are saying is the reason porn mags are sold behund the counter or in brown paper bags or the reason you can't buy dildos or XXX videos at Walmart is just so the shopowners look good in the eyes of politicians?
It's called the Law dude!
There are restrictions in place for a reason. Only a 14 year old slashdotting poster who can't get what he wants would say such a thing...
But in Australia video games are given a rating (M15 / 18) just like movies. They are rated in the same view as movies by the same relevant government body. Now I'm not sure how well this is enforced but I can't see the local Kmart handing over a copy of Vice City to a twelve year old. There are huge fines for the store owner for violating this law.
Now my question is isn't this the same kind of thing? It's just not healthy for minors to be exposed to some of the content on these games. They simply don't have the life experience to mentally digest what they see. Now I love gaming as much as the next guy but even I think a line has to be drawn somewhere. And if it isn't enforced with hugh penalites then there is no point in having the law in the first place.
Can someone explain this to me? (Someone with more geek knowledge than myself:) )
Surely the only way to beat Google is to develop a program that caches pages at a faster rate than the Google bots? I know Google have a great headstart with 8 Billion+ pages indexed but if someone could develop a way to index pages at a faster rate then wouldn't that do it?
It's just my theory and I'm waiting for it to get blown out if the water so please..I'm all ears...
This is no way Google will become the next Alta Vista. Alta Vista never had the market share or brand recognition that Google does. Sure AV was big in it's day but that was when Yahoo and Overture and AV all had a simliar market share and users would regularly check out other SE's to find results. That just doesn't happen anymore. People just use Google.
Either way I find it annoying that EVERYTHING new that Google gets involved is considered to be their attempt at World Domination. This is purely a/. reaction to Microsofts business dealings in the IT world. Just because Google are expanding their business model to incorporate other internet related ventures apart from search engines does not necessarily mean they are "doing a Microsoft".
that it will be manned 24/7, all the expiring space food will rotated to the front and if any of the astronauts need a break there will always be a family member ready to help out...
Why can't it just be "Great Human". I'm not trolling and am probably off-topic here but the sooner we lose the barriers on this planet called "countries" the better. I was born and currently live on the continent of Australia. But I don't consider myself "Australian". It simply doesn't mean anything to be born here. I am Human. As is everyone else. I could have been born anywhere and would still be encouraged to have the same feeling about where I'm from. But before you come back with "What about your national pride!" if everyone one on the planet has it then doesn't it really cease to mean anything? How can anyone's country be better and then anyone else's? (And I'm not refering to political climates) It just dirt...
Print media sell advertising depending on the position of the ad and how long the advertiser wants to run the ad in their publication. Television sells ads in a similar way - when the ad runs (timeslot) and how long for. Accuracy is limited to the nearest 1000 or so. This method has been tried to limited success in favour of the "absolute" accuracy of CPC - which has now turned into a joke. I think the only way for all parties to agree is to convert website traffic using the old method. Charge for the time and position only of ads. The amount you charge is based on traffic numbers as a whole but not individual page views or clicks. Just like TV and print media who can't tell exactly how many people looked at an advertisement but given the numbers and length of time the ad runs it gives you a pretty good idea.
That is why the article it titled 'Opinion'. It's meant to be read like someones thoughts. Not necessarily like a journalistic piece.
that has to give the ok. If it was the Chinese government we never would have heard of this development in the first place.

someone let the cat out of the bag ;)
that they wouldn't bother patenting something that hadn't already been tried and tested (read:created) already in the lab.

Sorry kid.

How many Walmart employees had to die in order for this product to get released?

Geek

This would have to be the overused Simpsons reference ever on slashdot. It has reached lame beyond belief proportions.

Because then you could essentially run your own server and charges other for dialup access. The upload speed is limited on purpose.

as like "a monkey on my back" but this is ridiclous...
How can we be surprised...SP2 caused more problem than it fixed. But at least we have MS Longtime to look forward to ;)

Dizzy? It's just downright annoying. You would think Forbes could provide better production than that. But being the geek I am I endured it anyway...
reading and posting on /. Does that count?
It wasn't so much of a 'Quantum Leap' to see that coming...
