My room-mate from highschool has recently become a spammer, and he has described his income from it as "pretty good". He didn't give me an exact figure, but told me his two-man operation had a revenue of $100,000 in one month. And yes: who the hell works for 50 cents an hour? Give me a friggin' break.

  6. Choice Quote on CherryOS Not All It's Cracked Up To Be · · Score: 5, Interesting

Sebastian Ballas, PearPC's lead developer, said a screenshot of CherryOS shows a variable named "SPIRO MULTIMAX 3000," a nonsensical term Ballas claims to have invented for use in PearPC.

"It is absolutely unlikely that someone uses exactly this name for the same purpose," he said. "The way he (Kryeziu) is lying is making me angry."

When told that variables with the same names had been found in both CherryOS and PearPC, Kryeziu said programming logic often leads to variables and functions with similar, or identical, names.

"There are some functionalities that can only be done a certain way," he said. "Names are going to be similar or identical because there are only certain ways to do things."

Last time I was there, the price of an average cd was 10 bucks (I noticed, much cheaper than the average music CD from the US).

I think the primary reason for the death of this business strategy is not the price of the CD, but the CD itself. As has been mentioned in countless posts, the CD is becoming quite an inconvienent and restrictive medium (relative to MP3s of course, the CD hasn't changed, MP3s have simply changed how we evaluate such things).

  12. Something I've thought about... on Gene Doping: Genetically Engineered Athletes · · Score: 1

What is exactly, the basis for what is determined to be fair and not fair? There is genetics, which is through random and evolutionary processes, the selection for individuals with upregulation of genes that promote atheleticism (i.e. two track stars marrying and having babies). This is usually seen as fair and okay in competition. Then there is the direct doping of chemicals which are the downstream products of such genes, both naturally occuring and synthetic analogs, which are usually outlawed. Now we have the upregulation of those genes through "artificial processes". When analyzed on this level, I can't help but realize how all these tactics lead to the same outcome (on a molecular biology level, not ethnical, moral or whatever). The methods that utilize technology and usually require more money are the ones deemed unfair. Also, if foreign DNA constructs are need to upregulate these genes, it is likely that a test can be developed to assay for this. Even if the individual's own natural open reading frame and promoter are taken out and duplicated (not 100 percent this would even work), one could perhaps test for the unnatural abundance of such DNA by comparing quantitative PCR runs which compare that against a gene which has nothing to do with atheletic performance. All in theory of course, this is assuming that both parts are equally accesible to the polymerase and that there are no secondary structure elements that will create "kinks", etc etc. I'm guessing that such experimental details can be worked out to make sure that the chance of false positives is low.

  19. Some ideas on Protecting Our Parents' PCs? · · Score: 1

There have been many suggestions for buying a Mac/using OSX, but if buying a new computer is not an option, here are some ideas.

Set up accounts that restrict administrator style access for use by your parents.

Disable ActiveX and java on their browsers.

Force them to use web-based e-mail accounts only. (this atleast has the potential to avoid vulnerabilities inherent to MS outlook, etc)

Last but not least, keep a ghost image of the last time you reinstalled windows handy.

Personally, I've given up on all of the above (except for maybe the last) and decided to let my parents make mistakes. After all, that is the way I learned what to do and not to do regarding dangerous software/spyware etc. Sure I could strip all the functions away from the computer to make it safe but then what use is it to my parents...

Linux is an obvious alternative but my parents need to use software that only runs on windows.
