I long for the good ole days when they actually send out paper invoices in envelopes!;^)
And from the archives:
"In December 1999, Microsoft forgot to renew the domain name Passport.com, and so rendered its Hotmail service partially crippled. A Linux programmer, Michael Chaney, paid the $35 fee and promptly handed over ownership to Microsoft."
It was recently announced that Ubuntu would adopt systemd in future versions as well.
Yes, but only AFTER Debian, the Distro that Ubuntu, (and many other Distros) are based on, made the decision to switch to systemd. Now if Ubuntu would just go along with Wayland,...
Linus has the final say in the Kernel, and I have to agree with his decision. He has an excellent track record!;^)
Don't blame Tim for the ignorance of so-called, "News Analysts". Tim created a useful tool to advance the use of the Internet. It is far more useful than USENET that we were using when we first received messages to the effect of "Hey, come look at this new thing called WWW!" My first browser was Lynx when I only had a UNIX shell account while teaching at NYU.
DRM has NO PLACE in ANY standard for the Internet. I don't understand why Tim supports this. We obviously don't have all the facts. I agree with him that a Magna Carta for the Internet would be be appropriate. It would allow us to eliminate DRM.
In the words of Robert Burns, Tim is a "Man of independant mind"!
Dennis Ritchie, the creator of the C Programming Language, along with Ken Thompson, co-creators of the UNIX Operating System, Brian Kernighan, and many, many others, laid the groundwork for ALL Operating Systems, and technology that followed. Linux, all flavors of UNIX, Android, etc... lead the world in O/S's, NOT Apple.
Steve Jobs would still be a amateur Geek in his garage if it were not for all the Giants of the industry that came before.
Considering that they only died 6 days apart, where is Dennis's stamp?
This app should only be available for iPhones and (And especially) Windoze phones only! Let them drop and break all their phones, then replace them with Androids!;^)
Actually it applies to anyone who signs a work for hire agreement. Even an employee who does NOT sign a W.F.H. agreement owns the code they write. IANAL, so confirm this with a lawyer.
"Because LibreOffice doesn't do everything MS Office does?"
I keep hearing this, but I never see a list of the "10%" that MS Office can do that Libreoffice cannot. Plus, how many items on this 10% list are actually used by 90% of the MS Office users, including Google employees???
I would have assumed that if they had to use any Office Suite, that they would have chosen LibreOffice over MS Office! My question to Google, is Why Not???
The problem ONLY affects the VERY O/S that it needs to protect the most???;^) How many MILLIONS of different malware instances are out the in the wild??? I'll stick to Linux!;^)
Not everyone does think logically! We all can think of things we experience every day that were NOT logically designed or planned!!!;^)
Anyone can learn a language and write some simple small programs, (many times badly, even by those WITH a CS degree!) but There is a lot more to programming than just learning the syntax. I myself am self-taught for the most part, but there is a lot missing that would make me much better had I obtained a CS degree.
Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of NYC is supposedly learning to program. I would be curious to evaluate his programs, whatever language he has chosen!;^)
1) Contact the original owner of the drive offering to archive the data to a DVD, and send it back to the original owner of the drive/data. 2) Contact NewEgg informing them of the data breach. 3) Preserve the hard drive intact in case the original owner of the drive wishes to take legal action against NewEgg. 4) Contact your own lawyer to confirm the above BEFORE contacting ANYONE!
I wish this had been more publicized. I just found out about this by reading this article. I would have preferred that there was more of a chance to do events locally today. A gathering in a pub, or a Linux fest celebrating his accomplishments.
As for the S.J. vs. D.M.R.:
Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Richard Stallman, Tim Berners Lee, Linus Torvolds,..., and millions of others owe their lives to the work done by Dennis Ritchie, Ken Thompson, with the assistance of Brian Kernighan. The IT World would be MUCH different, and definitely not as technologically advanced as it is today, without their efforts.
They deserve much more recognition, awards and thanks from the entire world than they will ever receive.
Rest in Peace Dennis! You and your work will never be forgotten! Thank you!

Show me any law or Engineering definition, standard, etc... that states or in any way requires the "Tool" to be held, or otherwise used against the material.
Seems to me it is no different than the Oyster shuckers at the Union Oyster House in Boston that have a cobblestone in the sink. They put the knife in the hinge of the oyster, then hold both vertically, and bring both down rapping the handle of the knife onto the cobblestone thereby forcing the knife into the oyster. Both the cobblestone and the knife are both "Tools", IMHO.
Comparing Bill Gates to Albert Einstein make me completely nauseous! If A.E. were alive today, he too would be furious at the comparison!
The only reason Gates is so rich is ripping off the people of the world with Incredibly Expensive O/S's and application software that is some of the worst crap on the face of the earth! A price tag of $500.00 US Dollars for a copy of M$ Office is, or should be, nothing short of criminal!
Symantec has estimated that there may be well over ONE MILLION different Malware in existence! That number seems a little high, but shows how disgustingly BAD their so-called software really is!
If Gates thinks he has reformed, he is sadly mistaken. The world will always remember him for the arrogant, greedy, self-centered BASTARD he is, and has always been!
The greatest Oxymoron of all times! (With an emphasis on MORON!);^)
Leave it to the US Military to ignore the problems the UK and France have had with Mickey$oft software installed on their military computers! Of course, the Pentagon has a history of overpriced and inappropriate procurement!
"So now we're proposing something even worse."
Why do you think it will be worse? Give them a chance and let's see the released version.
And 10 office furniture stores, and office chair repair shops in Redmond are closing down! ;^)
"civic contribution"??? ROTFLMAO!!!
"teaching" He teaches??? WHAT??? ;^)

NO vi!

When Mickey$oft first bought Hotmail in 1997, and for many years after, it was running Qmail, on FreeBSD, and Solaris computers! (See also, Qmail.org)
IMHO, it hasn't worked as well since they moved it to their own software! ;^)
The "joke" is on Mickey$oft! ;^)

"Ubuntu is clearly an operating system on the rise," PC Pro concludes.
Well, they conclude WRONG!!!
LINUX (Or GNU/Linux to some) is an O/S, UBUNTU is a DISTRO!!!
I get real tired of writers confusing a Distribution from an O/S!
