  1. Re:Why homebrew? on Nintendo Wii Homebrew Contest 2007 · · Score: 3, Informative

Interesting idea, but in practice this is impossible. I wanted to develop for the Wii, so I emailed and inquired about the process of getting a Dev Kit. After reading my email, it was forwarded to the VC dept, because I hadn't had any AAA titles published. At the VC dept level, the email was sat on and I haven't heard from them again. Turns out you have to have a brick and mortar company to be able to develop for the Wii. Not a company you run out of your house, and certainly not a hobbyist developer. This is a major oversight by nintendo, as third party support really matters this time around. And I would love to develop for it.

P.S. Unmodded all of my moderated posts so that I could say that.

Kinda makes the whole point of preordering the game pointless... I'm sure gamestop is happy to invest my $5 though :-/

Yes i have this mouse :) It was mostly unsupported, but it is really quite cool in Tribes2, you can feel the rumble of your jetpack when you use it. I believe Serious Sam also supported this mouse. Definitely brought some of the console benefits to the precise gameplay that you get with keyboard and mouse.

I believe the other secrets have been announced. I remember Iwata or Miyamoto mentioning that the secret had to do with the controller, and since then we've found out 2 things. The nunchaku with the analog stick will have accellerometers (sp?) and the wiimote will have a small speaker inside of it. I doubt there are many more secrets. The focus now is getting the media attention that MS and Sony have been so good at in the past.

I've read the opposite. The koala's appendix ( i believe its called a coelem ) is eight feet long!, the human's is tiny in comparison and we can live without it. The appendix contains bacteria, that in other animals are used to break down cellulose, something our stomach enzymes can't do by themselves.

It takes quite a bit more plumbing to digest plant matter. Cows have three stomachs, koala's have a huge ass appendix. We're much closer to carnivore in the internal piping than a vegetarian.

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I think Nintendo could do a lot here to help the current situation. As the article says, the market is finally here, and its in some ways easier to develop.

Nintendo is trying to force development costs down, while encouraging innovation, thats 2 things necessary to grow from this status-quo we are in right now.

correct me if I'm wrong, but gameplay as you describe is a software thing. Something we've always assumed nintendo products would have. the controller itself is much more closely tied to gameplay than graphics are, and as a result I dont think you can talk about improving gameplay without improving the controller itself.

I see the point you were trying to make, but there is a clear distinction between how graphics affect gameplay, and how a controller affects gameplay.

I thought this was Nintendo's strategy. Microsoft pushing for HD, and debuting at 400 bucks, and a huge focus on graphics seems to me 3 very blatant pushes for trying to capture the "hardcore" area.
