Albert Einstein's: "if bees were to disappear, man would only have a few years to live".
Bees pollinate about 60% of crops in US and Europe. Note that exact same disappearing colonies fenomenon happens in Portugal and Poland. We are doomed.
It is amazing how one can write whole page of text without any information (besides that customers on the plan will be credited).
Go Large was promoted as having traffic management applied to certain applications, but since December the traffic management process had affected all forms of activity. Can someone enlighten me what was it supposed to do and how it failed?
Basic probability also suggests that if there was any civilization capable of creating computer simulations the size of 'universe' (as we see it) then there is huge chance that we actually are such a simulation.
Sony Corp. will reach only 75% of its global target for PlayStation 3 sales this fiscal year through March, according to a Nomura report released 15th Jan. They originally planned 6 mil, adjusted to 4.5 mil now. more...
Erm... and how exactly will someone turn p2p client into a zombie? I mean you can access shared volume if it is not password protected, but run anything?
Or was this dude letting share his entire HD including OS?
WTF is a 'podcast'? Isn't it just a idiotic, leet name for audio file you download?
Now, some formats can be streamed while others can't but that is a different piece of cake.... Since you stipulate it might affect 'podcasts' then it will as well affect *ALL* mp3, ogg, etc files.
Just put your passport in the microwave and nuke it for 5-10 sec.
I do it with bigger ammount of cash, too, since new US banknotes can be detected from distance. If I'm about to carry few hundreds of $ in my pocket, I don't want to advertise it.
He made the money on the internet auctions, not being hired by any japanese company, selling virtual goods, dammit! Which brings some interesting implications and questions....
Can I, being, say, Irish citizen on vacations in USA:
-Start an auction on ebay
-answer my company emails or ssh to my work to do some programming (I make money while in US)
-buy/sell my stocks over the internet ... you got the drift.
You can have a credit card issued with Donald Duck printed on it. Some banks will ask you what name do you want on the CC they issue. It is up to you and no law says it has to be your legal name.
Imagine opt-in GPS tracking instead of opt-out.
Eg: Bob requests tracking of Alice within $distance for $duration, Alice might agree or not, but default is OFF.
Some phone pairs, like mom-child might have tracking ON and not possible to switch off (it might go into cell service plan).
The first microprocessor in history, Intel 4004 was a 4-bit CPU designed for usage in calculators, or, as we say now, designed for "embedded applications". Clocked at 740 KHz, the 4004 executed up to 92,000 single word instructions per second, could access 4 KB of program memory and 640 bytes of RAM. Although the Intel 4004 was perfect fit for calculators and similar applications it was not very suitable for microcomputer use due to its somewhat limited architecture. The 4004 lacked interrupt support, had only 3-level deep stack, and used complicated method of accessing the RAM. Some of these shortcomings were fixed in the 4004 successor - Intel 4040.
Which bugs me every time evolution subject pops up on slashdot.
Common. This is technology/science oriented site for tech/science folks.
AND YET IT CREATES LONG, HEATED, EMOATIONAL DEBATES. Anyone cares explaining why?
One can observe evolution from very simple mathematical models, like cell automation (eg 'LIFE' simulation) all the way to genetic programming models and up. So why very, very complex environment (a.k.a. EARTH) makes evolution questionable for so many folks? My take is because we can't grasp sheer complexity of it.
Keeps a set of rich guys from pumping quarters in it all day long without any negative consequences for them.
I hope the next feature added will be automatically issued parking tickets when someone exceeds their time... sort of 'convenience ticket'. That is what you will eventually get when you disclose your id/cell number in advance in a ticket gamble.
Now if the missle rotates (nothing too hard about making it rotate) then your super laser-pointer has to be really powerfull to penetrate through it and make permanent damage. Another simple idea is to make a sliding shield protecting from laser beam.
When I think about it more it gets closer to 'paper, rock, scissors' rather then 100% accurate missle defense system.

In that case our simulation may purposely use one civ per universe...

... requiring parents permission anytime kid wants to get on the bus? How about letting kids in the mall only with written permission?
you know, shit can happen on the bus....
in fact, shit can happen anywhere.
How about a site hosted in Romania or Israel?
State laws can not and will not replace neglecting parents.

well, did you ever see closed source nothing?
:)
which raises a question....
if I distribute a null file under GPL don't any modification to it have to be also GPL-ed?
I program in Malbolge, you insensitive clod!_ language

I hope next windows ver will be coded in Malbolge and open source.

Actually you need more to build a reliable 3D map:
-horizontal angle mentioned by you
-altitude
-zoom
5 numbers at a minimum: latitude, longitude, vertical and horizontal angles and altitude.
