  1. Re:I hate the term "green power", article full of on Hydrogen Buses In Iceland · · Score: 5, Informative
Actually, most of the energy needs in Iceland are currently met by good old hydro (as in water) dams rather than geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is almost the sole source of heating, though; 85% of heating needs are met by geothermal energy.

Now, some people may debate exactly how 'green' hydro dams are, but they are certainly more green than fossil fuels. However, there is one strange twist here, which is somewhat offtopic: more than a few dams in Iceland, including a massive one that is currently being constructed at Karahjukar are erected for the exlusive purpose of providing power for aluminum smelters, which are not that green.

Hydrogen generation is at least a noble attempt to use some of the available electricity for slightly more eco-friendly purposes, and surely causes less polution than fossil fuels if it is powered by hydro power.

The magic kind of went away for me, though, when they abandoned the venerable graphics/text-adventure hybrid interface in favor of a point-and-click one.

Yes, it's not C#, but it is getting closer and closer to being C/C++ (or something very very close). For instance, Java 5 borrows features heavily from C. Just take a look at some of the new features:

    - Generic Types (AKA templates)
    - Enumerated Types
    - Static Import (usage of this looks quite similar to the #define method)
    - Formatted Output / Input (printf/scanf style)
    - Varargs

I like this trend. These, among other changes in version 5, are all steps towards reducing the awkwardness in the Java syntax that many people complain about. Java is a young, evolving language that still has a lot of potential.

It is a bit funny, though, that this evolution takes the form of borrowing stuff from an ancient language. Maybe C just got things right in the first place, huh?

I don't live in the US myself, but I imagine these endless 'warnings' all over the media, day in and day out, must get very, very tiring.

I hereby propose a new mathematical function. It is called BSD (no relation to the OS), short for BullShit-Detector.

The calculation of BSD is simple. Its domain is the set of all strings. The range is all real numbers from 0.0 - 1.0. To calculate BSD(s) for string s, simply take the length of s (call this l). Then, divide the number of of characters that contribute to the actual, non-bullshit content of the string by l. This is the value of BSD(s).

To give a pertinent example, it is plainly apparent that BSD('Leveraging our paradigm-shifting product line with state of the art technology developed by a dedicated team of professionals, we offer a significant competitive advantage on the diversified but fragmented market of best of breed anti-spam solutions.') = 0.0.

It is my hope that this will leverage the ever-expanding work of linguistics researchers around the world in utilizing paradigm-shifting methods for significantly empowering their abilities to detect bullshit.

  25. Consumer Choice 101 on Longhorn's Copy Protection Standard · · Score: 1

    It's bad news, period:

For their part, Levy and Munns have allegedly provided a "strawman" proposed framework, which covers familiar ground such as the ability for CD buyers "to make a specified number of protected copies of the disc". But there are also some more ambitious requests, such as "when copying the files to the hard drive the consumer can use any protected music file format of their choice". We imagine Apple won't be willing to play ball on this front.

In other words: 'You can copy your files in any format, as long as it's got the right kind of DRM.'

I can't begin to contemplate what would happen to the music industry if it were to accept Microsoft's offer. In fact, I can't begin to contemplate the possibility that it would accept such a mad proposal.

Protecting CDs with a new scheme that's built into Longhorn will mean, as far as I can see, that these CDs will be unplayable on any standalone CD player that's currently out there. So what are people supposed to do; upgrade their players alongside their Windows? Also, as has been pointed out already - what about Apple and other computer platforms?

This is simply ridiculous. I'm at loss for words.
