The irony only stems from a law that was written long ago and doesn't cover current mixed communication methods. The FBI's lawyers tried to legislate through the judicial system, and that's not how it works.
The main problem with this comes from the technology. In days of yore, to communicate with someone that wasn't with you, you picked up a phone and made a 1-1 electrical connection (telephone) and spoke directly through government-controlled paths. Nowadays, that information is packetized and sent over privatized communication networks that are at the same time local, and interstate. I believe that if the FBI should not have been in on this. It was a LOCAL criminal matter. And if the local police had taken the approach of "breaking and entry" or possibly "invasion of privacy" or even "practicing investigative work without a license(ie no PI license)" alot more could have been done.
Needless to say, what this fu#$tard did was flat out wrong. If I'd ever caught anyone doing the same to me, I'd have them drawn and quartered.
Don't forget about the good ol' OLED(organic light emitting diode). It's acutually an organic polymer(read plastic) that forms the semiconductor of the LED. The awsome part about this is it can be manufactured with a glorified color printer and cut to any shape, form, or function... including flexible screens.
Of why people like me (and most of slashdot) HATE to rush out and buy new equipment. I just spent a little over 400 on a 19" LCD Pannel, and DAMNIT they come out with this nifty little thingy(that's the technical term ya know).
At this rate of technological development, I'm just wondering when Moore's law will be replaced by Murphy's.
And not to mention... they drew quite attractive women working on it too. Maybe they need to step into an EE or Electronics class before they wrote this book. I remember ONE girl that looked almost as decent as those cartoon ones.... Maybe that's why computer geeks like anime sooo much?
Now let me go get my soldering iron, a trained monkey and a monitor I can get a tan from and we got it made. The monkey is for fetching stuff and "debugging" btw..... (hands monkey a hammer)
Novell will retain all of its patents, copyrights and trademarks(except for the trademarks UNIX and UnixWare), a royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide license back to UNIX and UnixWare for internal use and resale in bundled products, Tuxeod, ond other miscellaneous, unrealted technology
is simply legalize for the phrase, "Screw you guys. I'm going home!"
But, does that mean that SCO was actually STUPID enough to only buy the right to the NAMES and a COPY of the code that they can legaly make a new dev branch on? RTFLMFAO
Actually, in the presidential election, the popular vote should mean exactly d1ck. The reason for the electoral college was to separate the (easily swingable) popular opinion from the Selection of the country's highest executive office. It's designed to keep power-hungry, mad, what-have-you people from brainwashing the public into thier pocket; thereby effectively establishing a dictatorship and destroying the very country (s)he is supposed to run. To be honest, unless there is a state law to the contrary, the electoral college of the state can say "screw the popular vote, you're all insane
". Also, if you go on straight popular vote, even more people will become disenfranchised with the voting process, because they will NEVER see a president in thier state. For instance, the candidates would spend ALL their time in states like California, Illinois, Ohio, etc. Leaving the rest of the country just totally PISSED OFF.
Go with your popular vote and see the country shot down in flames. All the American people are supposed to be able to federally elect(according to the original idea) is the people who Represent them... IE: Congressmen in the House of Representatives.... Everything else is a privledge.
One of my professors in college, Dr. Bob Reese has been doing alot of research on phased logic. Which in summary is:
Summary
Phased Logic (PL) is a self-timed design methodology that provides an automated translation of a clocked system in the form of D-flip-flops and combinational gates to a self-timed netlist of PL gates. The only global net in the self-timed netlist is a reset signal. The PL netlist is a micropipelined system with two-phase control. Two distinct implementation technologies are supported, fine-grain and coarse-grain.

I'm sure the NSA and CIA prolly bought about 4-5 each:)
I've been reading up on some of the "up and coming" display technologies, and I have a theory!
The new devices that are coming out are "Organic LEDs." These devices are looking to offer brighter displays, no backlighting required, even FLEXIBLE TV! Lets just say that with a screen thickness as small as 1mm (yes that's millimetres) I'll wait for that 42" TV you can hang on the wall like a picutre(and not need a forklift/specialty anchorage).
Jeeze, first it was the clothes, then it was my 12-pack of Bud Light. Are you telling me now that I have to rip the rfid tag out of my Passport and slap it on the back of some dog to remain anonymous in another country? greaaaaat.......
Now all they need is some "educational" sex instruction tapes to pipe into the screen so most guys can see how it's supposed to be done and you won't have half the female population complaining about how they wish their guys were better in bed. I can' see it now... "Here honey, I got you this new toy!"
So if both of my foes are foe of each other, does that mean that they are both my friend and foe? Which leads me to believe that neither were my foe orginially but they were... and... and....
I believe this is probably the first shot over the bow... so to speak. I see this, and other M$oft tactics, as a sign that they are getting ready to use the DMCA (and hopefully the IDUCE act if it *GASP* get's passed) to bully the wayward explorers that have moved away from them to the Open Source Initiative. They will end up wrapping EVERY file that is created through their programs in some for of DRM/File Encryption so that they can sue the pants of anyone who writes an import program, like Open Office and all the other Office "Compatible" suites. I think this is a step in the wrong direction that needs to be stopped before Microsoft has the right to deny the CIA or the President the right to view a document simply because it was created by Microsoft Word and they want to view it in open office.
The really scarry part... All the above coupled with "Trusted Computing" and you no longer own anything you create, you no longer own a "lifetime" license to the software you purchased, hell you don't even really OWN your hardware at that point............
And people wonder why geeks view M$oft as such a bad company. It's a perfect example of the damage that can be done by an entity that has a monopoly on the system.
I think this is akin to the practice of campaigns buying up web adresses like Georgebushsucks or kerryblows, etc. Granted it's not exactly the most tactful approach, and he's not trying to sell it back to anyone. Cybersquatting only motivation is the monetary gain from selling the domain back to someone. I just think this was a distasteful, ugly, albeit LEGAL, tactic that will eventually work its way out via voter backlash.

Oh great, here we go... Microsoft getting on the open source bandwagon.
Since Microsoft can't beat open source software economically and financially, I guess they are gonna try and join it.
But having MSoft join open source is like when you look at someone who has tons of broken cars and they offer to "fix" yours for free......
